Why is fundraising important?

Your fundraising effort creates the change we need in our communities.

Your support enables us to develop primary prevention programs and targeted campaigns to engage boys and men. Thank You!

$25 Contributes to the Community Response Fund to help us provide grants for communities to deliver projects and innovative campaigns to advance gender equality and prevent gendered violence.

$155 Brings onboard one Community Partner and empowers them to self-reflect on gender dynamics in their life, challenge sexist attitudes and behaviours, empower victim survivors and work within their community to help eliminate violence against women.

$45 Covers the cost for one person to access our eLearning course to strengthen their understanding of violence against women and how to prevent it – this leads to allies working actively in the community.

$250 Supports our advocacy work, including policy review, legal advocacy, and victim-survivor support. This work brings about powerful social change, such as the push to criminalise coercive control.

6+ weeks before your event

The first step is to register your event. Be sure to tick the relevant boxes if you would like to receive an Event Kit. You will receive your official “Authority to Fundraise” notification once you have registered, as well as being listed on our website and receiving extra support from our Events Team.

Reach out to different members of the community for their support in pulling your event together. Think council, schools, businesses, sporting groups, and your local White Ribbon Committee.

Determine exactly what the event will look like – is it a march? Is it a community day? Is it a virtual event, to bring people together in these times of lockdown and social distancing? Refer to our event ideas earlier in the kit for some inspo!

Depending on the size of your event, it might help to have a small group to share the workload. Now is the perfect time to set this up.

4+ weeks before your event

Start to advertise your event with posters, social media tiles, newsletters, and other resources provided in this kit (or feel free to make up your own using the In Support logo!)

Purchase White Ribbon Australia merchandise to sell at your event. Buy a box of White Ribbons and sell them on to everyone who attends to help raise awareness. It’s important to order merchandise early so it arrives in time for your event - try to order no later than the end of October.

Coordinate any volunteers, suppliers, venues, etc.

Make sure your event is COVID Safe and follow your State restrictions.

1 week before your event:

This is a great time to reconfirm any suppliers that are part of your event and finalise details such as RSVPs, timelines and volunteers, etc.

Print out/download any materials you may need from your White Ribbon event dashboard, including flyers, factsheets, pledge forms and videos.

November 19 doesn’t work for you?

You can host a White Ribbon Day event any time in

November, or even December.

During the event

We encourage you to do an Acknowledgement of Country at the beginning of your event. For example, “I’d like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land on which we meet today, the (people) of the (nation) and pay my respects to Elders past and present.”

Take plenty of photos so you can share them with everyone in the moment, or later. Don’t forget to hashtag #whiteribbonday21, #WRD2021 and #whiteribbonevents. Please tag us in with the handles listed earlier in this kit.

Ask people to add donations to your fundraising page.

If you are fundraising at your event, ensure that you collect the details of anyone wishing to receive a tax receipt so that you can issue one later.

After the event

Thank everyone who came to your event, including attendees, sponsors, donors, speakers and organisers.

If you received cash donations at your event, upload them to your event page.

Make sure you share all photos online and remember to tag us! wand remember to tag us!

Key messages• This White Ribbon Day, our strong focus is on the action

men can take to end men’s violence against women.

• We’re asking ‘How Can Men Make Change?’ and challenging them, and all Australians, to ‘Learn, Give and Take Action’.

• Men’s violence against women is an ongoing epidemic in Australia and, sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation worse; lockdowns and social distancing have not only created a spike in violence, but also reduced the ability of victims to seek help.

• We need to change the attitudes and social norms that excuse or condone disrespect, sexual harassment and abuse.

• Gender inequality and learned behaviours are at the heart of this problem, so it’s essential that men are part of the solution.

• This White Ribbon Day we all need to play our part – and we need men who know that they are a part of the solution to be equipped with the tools they need to make change in themselves, their communities and our society.

• White Ribbon Australia takes a primary prevention approach to eliminating men’s violence, working to change the social conditions that are the drivers of gendered violence through self-reflection, education, workplace accreditation and community-led prevention activities.

• We know that to end violence against women, we must engage men, boys and broader society in this work, with White Ribbon Day being a day to talk about what we can do in our everyday lives to make change.

• Your White Ribbon Day events - whether a march, a morning tea, wearing a ribbon to work, or a virtual gathering – are about more than talking about these issues.

• White Ribbon Day events are a call to action, with resources to take into our everyday lives, communities and workplaces, so that we can all keep making change towards women’s safety all throughout the year.

• This White Ribbon Day, bring people together – in person or online – to discuss how men can make change and commit to action to end men’s violence against women.

• Ending men’s violence against women can sometimes feel like an impossible goal. But we can do it together, community by community, workplace by workplace.

• On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner.

• 1 in 4 women have experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner since the age of 15.

• Almost 40% of women continued to experience violence from their partner while temporarily separated.

FURTHER RESOURCES

Key messages

• Statistics about violence against women and domestic violence

• Causes of violence against women

• Where to find help

• Fact sheets about how to prevent men’s violence against women

This year, we ask people organising and attending White Ribbon Day events to commit to doing three things:

• Learn: Access training and resources about how men and all of us can make change towards ending all forms of violence and abuse against women

• Give: Donate to White Ribbon Australia’s work to engage men and boys in ending violence and abuse against women

• Take action: From simple things you can do each day, to becoming a White Ribbon Australia Community Partner, starting a Community Action Group or encouraging your workplace to become White Ribbon Accredited.
