The byway travels between three of the Cascade Range’s most distinctive volcanic peaks–Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens. Mount St. Helens experienced a major eruption in 1980, and has been continuously active since then.

Stamp locations are available all along the byway. Locations are listed on the next few pages, and shown with a in the byway guide.

Small-scale agriculture, rural residential communities, and rolling hills border the west end of the byway. Views of all three of the corridor’s volcanoes can be seen from this section of roadway—the only place on the byway where all three mountains can be seen at once.

The Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery is the largest in Washington State, and has an excellent visitor center and self-guided tour. Lewis and Clark State Park has easy access to a stand of old growth forest with a boardwalk and interpretive tour.

The Big Bottom ValleyThe broad Cowlitz River Valley is surrounded by forested foothills, with occasional views to the big volcanoes. The valley bottom is prime elk habitat—especially in the winter months.

Side tours from this section of the byway lead to Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, and the Mount Adams backcountry. Other recreational opportunities in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest include hiking and mountain biking trails, wildlife watching, and scenic backcountry driving routes.

Rimrock and Tieton RiverOn the east side of White Pass the byway passes Rimrock Lake, a large reservoir on the Tieton River. In the fall, larch trees on surrounding hillsides turn a clear yellow, celebrating the season before winter snowfall.

East of Rimrock Lake, the Tieton River is a sparkling ribbon in a narrow, rocky canyon. Volcanic rock formations border the road, including colonnades, pillow lava, and other unique geological features. Trails and camping areas are located throughout the Rimrock and Tieton areas.

The Oak Creek RegionSome of the richest and most diverse wildlife viewing along the byway can be found in the Oak Creek Wildlife Area. Elk, bighorn sheep, deer, and a wide variety of bird species make their homes in the habitats bordering the byway and alongside roads. One side trip along the rough Bethel Ridge Road takes visitors to high country habitat where mountain goats can be seen in the right season. Recreational information is available at the Oak Creek Wildlife Area or in the neighboring town of Naches.
