Auxiliary Formed at Reunion By RUTH DEAN

5 ur staff Writer

Old school grads have no monopoly on alumnae reunshyion as a group of former members of Congress their wives and widows recently demonstrated

In lact the distaff side of the aisle got 50 much in the spirit of things when the Forshymer Members of Congress Inc held their second annual reunion here a week ago they formed their own auxili ary

We tl10ught it would proshymote good relations and we could join in some of the acshytivities planned for the men like the Sta te Department and Pentagon briefings they were invited to observed the auxshyiliarys new president Mrs Hallold C Hagen widow of the Minnesota congressman

Mrs Hagen said she felt surprised and pleased that Ii show of hands of the 98 charter members showed at ~ast half were in favor of atshytending the briefings when they come next year

Up to Date Being brought up to date

on current issues she feels would be a big help to former legislators wives if their exshyperience is like her own When youre back in the States youre often asked to speak on what is happening in Congress and in Washigton she said

The spadework for organizshying the auxiliary was dooe by Mrs Hagen and Mrs Walter Judd wife of the lormer Minn- esota congressman who is this years presidpnt of Forshymer Members of Congress

Actually it was former Rep Brooks Hays of Arkansas who relinquished his presidency of Former Members to run for Congress tfus year from North Carolina and Judd who got the ball rolling for the ladies They invited the dows to join Uteir wives for the first I

reunion last fall

And it was at the ladies I persuasion they changed the dat e for theif second reunion from faU to spring to coincide with the week of the Congresshysional Club s annual First Ladys brunch always held ill April The brunch was held

oJ a Thursday and the Forshymer Members reunion was the folloiling day

After forming the au xiliary at a luncheon meeting in the Raytummiddotfl~ng the women adjourned tothe Ladies Galshyien of the liouse of Represhysentatives to 1Yitness two hours of reminiscences by the Former Members for which the House recessed in their honor

The auxiliary then Incl its own r eunion at a fil lll showshying in the Ways and IIeaos Committee room The film made by Congressional Club members for their Founclers Day brunch las t February evoked laughs and memories

Directed oy the clubs talshyented Mrs Robert McClory the film of the clubs history nd current activities was jone silent film style Club manager Anne Spaeths husshyband Larry a professional pianist supplied the lively piano accompaniment in the darkened committee room

Clubs said M s Ralph Harshyvey who flew up with her husshyband from their Indiana farm You know we came in the terrible 80th the one Trushyman t lked about she said as Mrs Clifford McIntire of Maine joined in the laughter

Mrs JohJi N Robsion Jr of Kentucky whose husband had helped 102-year-old for middot mer Rep Maurice Thatcher of Kentucky to the podium at the Hou e session ea rli r in the day commented r think this is a great idea for t hose of us wlwgt live a VilY

from Washington Those who live here can still go to thei r individual Congress C 1u b meetings but for those of us

who come just once a year the auxiliar) is a great idea

Amongst those joining in the festivit ies were the other auxiliary officers Thc are ~I rs Sydney Herlong vice president Mrs Judd ~creshy

J OHN EHR LICHMAN

I checked out the suggestion that the President mi tlt sign IVIar tin Andersons application for membership in the Bohemian Club

The Preside11t feels since he is not a regular member but an honora y member that he should not sign as the sponsor for Martin He will be glad to have Marty list him as one of the members who has known him for years etc Probably the Club will then aGk for a letter and we can send that in - - he just feels because of the honorary status that he is not in a position to be the sponsor for any new member s

He wants you to be sure Martin understands that he would be glad to do this otherwise

THANKS~ ~o

Terrible 80th Afterwards the women had

ti me to visit before walking over to the Cannon Buil~ing Caucus Room for a recept ion the final get~together of the day with themiddot F~ Memshy

hers This looks life a reunion

of the various Coogress

Amongst those joining in the festivit ies were the other auxiliary officers Thc are ~I rs Sydney Herlong vice president Mrs Judd ~creshy

tary and Mrs John Foley treasurer

I checked out the suggestion that the President mi tlt sign IVIar tin Andersons application for membership in the Bohemian Club

The Preside11t feels since he is not a regular member but an honora y member that he should not sign as the sponsor for Martin He will be glad to have Marty list him as one of the members who has known him for years etc Probably the Club will then aGk for a letter and we can send that in - - he just feels because of the honorary status that he is not in a position to be the sponsor for any new member s

He wants you to be sure Martin understands that he would be glad to do this otherwise

THANKS~ ~o

I checked out the suggestion that the President mi tlt sign IVIar tin Andersons application for membership in the Bohemian Club

The Preside11t feels since he is not a regular member but an honora y member that he should not sign as the sponsor for Martin He will be glad to have Marty list him as one of the members who has known him for years etc Probably the Club will then aGk for a letter and we can send that in - - he just feels because of the honorary status that he is not in a position to be the sponsor for any new member s

He wants you to be sure Martin understands that he would be glad to do this otherwise

Terrible 80th Afterwards the women had

ti me to visit before walking over to the Cannon Buil~ing Caucus Room for a recept ion the final get~together of the day with themiddot F~ Memshy

hers This looks life a reunion

of the various Coogress

Amongst those joining in the festivit ies were the other auxiliary officers Thc are ~I rs Sydney Herlong vice president Mrs Judd ~creshy

tary and Mrs John Foley treasurer

And it was at the ladies I persuasion they changed the dat e for theif second reunion from faU to spring to coincide with the week of the Congresshysional Club s annual First Ladys brunch always held ill April The brunch was held

Directed oy the clubs talshyented Mrs Robert McClory the film of the clubs history nd current activities was jone silent film style Club manager Anne Spaeths husshyband Larry a professional pianist supplied the lively piano accompaniment in the darkened committee room

of the various Coogress

THANKS~ ~o
