White Christmas Stitches For Your Stockings

Let the fun begin! This collection is full of choices: designs, fabrics, toe style and cuff style. Below we have featured a photo of each stocking with the toe and cuff styles that we chose. Also listed are which designs are required for multi-hoop and jumbo hoop stitching. Feel free to mix up the toes and cuffs to suit your taste.Note: Standard hoop refers to 5x7 hoops. Jumbo hoops refer to hoops with a sewing field of at least 9.25" x 14.25". The exact dimensions of each design are listed on the thread chart. Please refer to the thread chart to ensure that the design will fit into your hoop.

Paisley Stocking

Standard hoops use designs OC00401, OC00402 and OC00403(Print design template pages 1-3)

P F :Trace stocking pattern (including notches) onto the right side of one piece of fabric but do not cut out. Find the dotted lines on the pattern and extend the lines onto the fabric ¼" to indicate heel and toe placement later. PHOTO 02

E D :1. Choose desired stocking.

• NOTE: Refer to the Overview section for photos of fi nished stockings and specifi c notes that pertain to certain stockings.

2. Print design template(s) for chosen stocking. (If sewing a stocking requiring a Jumbo Hoop you will need to print all templates, if there are more than one, then tape them together to create one large template.)

3. Cut out fi rst provided template (Template A). Cut a small slit through the horizontal and vertical axis of the template. Fold back two opposite

corners. PHOTO 03 This will allow you to mark the center point of the design without lifting the paper from the fabric.

4. Spray back of template with 101 Quilt Basting Spray.

5. Adhere to right side of stocking, aligning labeled notches on paper template with notches drawn when tracing the pattern.

6. Spray a hoop size piece of OESD Ultra Clean & Tear with 101 Quilt Basting Spray. Adhere stabilizer to the wrong side of stocking, keeping paper template centered over stabilizer.

7. Hoop stabilized fabric, keeping crosshairs horizontal and vertical in hoop. PHOTO 03

8. Attach hoop to machine, use template to set the center of design as necessary.

9. Carefully remove paper template.10. Embroider design.11. Remove hoop from machine, and fabric from hoop.12. Remove excess stabilizer from back of embroidery.13. Repeat for each design of chosen stocking as required. Stockings made using a standard hoop

require 2-3 hoopings depending on stocking chosen. Stockings made using a Jumbo Hoop will require only one hooping. Refer to Overview section for specifi cs of each stocking.

T H P P :1. Spray wrong side of cut out heel and toe with

101 Quilt Basting Spray.2. Adhere heel and toe to proper place on

stocking. Use the extended lines drawn earlier during fabric preparation (PHOTO 02) to determine correct placement. The outside edges of heel and toe will extend beyond traced stocking pattern.

3. Finish inside edges of heel and toe with a satin stitch (width of 2.5 - 3, length .4), zigzag (width 2.7-3.7 length .4-.8) or with any of your machine’s decorative stitches. PHOTO 04 To prevent puckering, slide a scrap of OESD Ultra Clean & Tear under stocking before stitching.

3. Pin layers together.4. Stitch on the traced line of the stocking pattern

(ignore tabs, they were used only for embroidery design placement) on both sides and along foot portion of the stocking (stitch through all layers). Leave the top portion of stocking unstitched for turning.

5. Trim all layers by cutting ¼" outside of stitching. Trim top by cutting ¼" outside of traced pattern line. • Pointy Toe Tip: Reduce bulk by trimming

excess batting from seam allowance around toe area.

6. Clip seam allowances and grade seams as needed to allow for smooth curves along rounded seams such as toe area.

T S W S :Reach between the two layers of lining fabric and turn with lining side out. Stocking will now be wrong side out.

C H L :1. Cut a piece of fabric 2" wide and 6" long.2. Fold both long edges to the center and press.3. Fold in half lengthwise and press forming a

strip of fabric ½" x 6" long.4. Edge stitch both long sides of the strip.5. Fold strip in half to form a loop, and pin to

outside of the stocking at the heel seam. PHOTO 06

Finishing Options: Choose between Tradition Cuff or Lace Cuff . If you want to simply bind the top of your stocking, follow instructions under Lace Cuff titled Turn Stocking to Right Side and Create & Attach Binding.

Traditional Cuff : E C :1. Lay cuff fabric fl at with wrong side up. Fold

cuff fabric in half lengthwise and fi nger press.2. Fold cuff fabric in half crosswise and fi nger

press. You should now have a piece of folded fabric that measures 7 ¾" x 4 ½".

3. With cuff fabric still folded, have the long fold to the bottom and the short fold to the right, so that the top and the left are raw edges. Mark or pin the center of embroidery placement by measuring 4" from left side and drawing a vertical line or placing a pin in that spot. Measure 2" from the bottom and draw a horizontal line or place a pin in that spot. Where the two lines intersect will be the center of your embroidery. SEE PHOTO 07 and DIAGRAM A

4. Hoop one layer of OESD Ultra Clean & Tear Tear-Away Stabilizer.5. Spray hooped stabilizer generously with 101 Quilt Basting Spray.6. Unfold cuff fabric and adhere to hooped stabilizer, keeping crosshairs horizontal and vertical in

hoop.• NOTE: If cuff is a fabric with pile,

i.e. fur, be sure to cover with OESD AquaFilm Topping before embroidering.

7. Attach hoop to machine. 8. Embroider name using fonts from your

machine or software. Use crosshairs as the center of your design. • NOTE: Maximum embroidery area is 6 ½" x 3".

9. Remove hoop from machine, and fabric from hoop.

10. Remove excess Stabilizer from back of embroidery. • Note: If you have used a topping remove as well.

C C :1. Place embroidered cuff wrong side up.2. Spray one side of 4 ½" x 15 ½" batting with

101 Quilt Basting Spray and place along upper long edge of cuff . The 101 Quilt Basting Spray will temporarily hold the batting in place while stitching. PHOTO 08

3. Fold cuff in half lengthwise with right sides together. Stitch ¼" seam along the 9" edge.

4. Trim excess batting from seam allowance. Finger press seam allowance open.

5. Flip cuff in half, sandwiching the batting between the wrong sides of the cuff fabric. Embroidered name will be on the inside of the cuff . PHOTO 09

F T S C :

1. With stocking and cuff wrong side out, slide cuff over wrong side of stocking matching edge seams and raw edges. Make sure that embroidered name is on the same side of the stocking as the embroidery. Cuff seam will match the heal seam of the stocking. Remember your stocking is still wrong side out.

2. Pin in place. PHOTO 103. Stitch cuff to stocking using a ½" seam

allowance.

T S R S :Reach between the two layers of stocking fabric and turn with embroidered stocking side out. Stocking will now be right side out. Fold cuff down.

T S R S :Reach between the two layers of stocking fabric and turn with embroidered stocking side out. Stocking will now be right side out. Tip: to keep raw edges from fraying, edge stitch ⅛" from the edge. This stitch will later be covered by binding.

C A B : 1. On one short end of 3 ½" x 18" fabric, fold

edge ½" to wrong side and press. PHOTO 11

2. Fold binding in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.

3. Turn stocking right side out. 4. With folded end slightly to the backside of

stocking, pin binding to the right side of stocking top, matching raw edges. PHOTO 12

5. Cut off excess binding leaving approximately 1" overlap. Tuck overlapping raw end of binding inside folded end of binding. Pin binding to right side of stocking top. PHOTO 13

6. Attaching binding to stocking by stitching ½" in from the raw edge, beginning at the heel seam. (Remember, your hanging loop will be inside your stocking, with loop pointing down.)

7. Fold the binding up and over the stocking top to the inside of stocking. Making sure to keep raw end tucked.

8. Press into place, making sure that the folded edge of the binding covers stitching line.

9. “Stitch in the ditch” from the outside, catching the inside fold of the binding. Starting at heel seam stitch around entire binding, stitching tucked end of binding last, so that the tuck can be adjusted as necessary. PHOTO 14

10. Pull hanging loop up so that it extends out of stocking top. Stitch close to edge of binding to hold into place. PHOTO 15

C L C :Embroider two lace cuff pieces (Design OC00439). Remove water soluble backing following the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines found on next page.

A L C :1. Pin one half of cuff to the front of stocking.

Keep top edge of lace even with top of bound stocking. PHOTO 16

2. Stitch lace to stocking front by stitching in the straight embroidered area, between the two satin stitches.

3. Attach back half of cuff by repeating the above steps on the back of the stocking. A gap between the two lace pieces is perfectly normal.

F L C :1. Use satin ribbon to lace both sides of cuff .

PHOTO 172. Tie ribbon ends in a bow. Use glue or a hand

stitch to prevent bow from being untied.
