BEARS IN THE CREEK

Apparently we have a bear in and around the Creek. One of our members has confronted the bear. Needless to say, one was surprised by the other. I have not seen the bear and feel itʼs best to act on the side of caution rather than ignore the warning. The DNR has been contacted and will attempt to trap the bear. If the bear is hostile, they will relocate it otherwise they will place a tracking collar on it. The collar has GPS tracking and will provide the DNR with the bearʼs whereabouts.

Meanwhile, what should we do? Educate yourselves how how to live with these animals. What I have learned from the DNR website; “Black bear are shy by nature. If you were hiking through the woods, a bear would most likely hear you or pick up your scent and run off before you even knew it was there. Bear have a natural fear of humans and it is best if that fear remains intact. If we leave foods accessible to bear, they may overcome their fear of humans in order to take advantage of it. Bear that learn to associate food

with humans can be dangerous. People must act responsibly when living or vacationing in bear country, and know what activities are likely to attract bear. Prevention is the key to avoiding people-bear conflicts.”

Donʼt leave your trash with food scraps accessible. Donʼt keep food in your tents.

RIDERS BEWARE !

Seasons come and season go. Time marches on and things always change. One big change for this season is Mark Todd is no longer turning a blind eye to anyone trespassing on his property. The association owns the ponds and the roadways across both of the dykes. As you cross the dyke and come to the end of the ponds you also come to the end of our land. If you continue further along the trails you will be trespassing on Mark’s property. Mark has invited the DNR onto his property and asked them to enforce against trespassers. Once invited onto private property, the DNR has full authority to enforce against any violations. Mark’s property was the location of a recent

event held in the area and suffered extensive damage.

Do not let the DNR make a poster child of of you or any members of your family. Make sure you are legal when riding and you are riding in acceptable areas.

CONTINUING TO ESTABLISH OUR IDENTITY

I have always loved driving into the Creek and seeing the big Whiskey Creek Campground signs. I can still hear the children asking it they could unbuckle their seats belts when we got to one of the signs. To us it meant we had arrived at a place where we could play a grow closer to one another a place where we left the crazy busy world behind. I have oft wondered why we, the Condo Association, didn’t have a sign of our own. I guess we were all so comfortable with Mark Todd taking care of our needs we were comfortable being associated with the Whiskey Creek Campground. Things are certainly different today. With the acquisition of the ponds I felt it was time for our own sign. Placing it at the ponds seemed to be the natural location for it. A place it can be viewed by all passerby's where it would not only identify our association but also stake a claim to the ponds. There would be no misunderstanding these ponds belong to someone, us; Whiskey Creek Condo Association!

I have never attempted a project quite like this before but I was really excited to get going on it. My goal was to have it in the ground before the general

membership meeting in May. I figured I had all winter to get it completed, that should be plenty of time. I think it was early winter when I visited Kevin for some timbers that he donated. Brother Frank and I brought them back to Livonia where we re-sawed them into boards and glued them together to form the sign itself. Then life got in the way; a Flooded “finished” basement, stolen car oh, and a bath house renovation. All of a sudden my self imposed deadline was looming overhead. My daughters pitched in and bailed me out in a big way. Kate and Becky did most of the painting on the sign. Without their help I surely would have missed my deadline. I hope you all love it as much as we enjoyed building it!

Thanks to; Kevin Bishop for the wood to carve on. Steve Parmeter for the lead on the poles. Most of my family had a hand in this project, my wife and children, brothers, nephew, sister Deb. But what was really cool was the members that came out when we were installing it. They jumped right in at a time that I was really just tired of digging the holes and completed the digging and helped set the sign into it’s final resting place. Thanks Gene J, Steve P. and Rick F. I needed that!

THE CREEK AS SEEN FROM ABOVE PROVIDED BY KEVIN BISHOP

LEGAL NEWSRules to live by

I have a couple things I’d like to share with you.

You’ve heard us talk about it before; “We are self policing”. What does it mean to be self policing? If you observe someone performing an act that is in conflict with our bylaws or is outright destructive, “YOU” need to say something to them. Stand up for yourself and “our” association, members and guests. Over the holiday weekend I learned of a couple members that exercised this obligation, confronting someone who not only was driving way beyond our speed limit but also ripping up one of our roads on a dirt bike. Road maintenance is the association’s largest expense without having to make repairs caused by deliberate unnecessary damages. Kudos for stepping up and saying something!

Another member noticed some small boats in our ponds and felt the people in the boats were not our members but rather guests of the Whiskey Creek Campground. As the story was reported to me, our member went over to the campground and expressed their displeasures to Danielle about her members using our private ponds. While I am in favor of speaking up and calling someone out, I am not a proponent of taking the complaint to a third person. In this case, the complaint should have been addressed directly to the individuals in the boats. From what I understand, Chad and Danielle tell all their guests where the limits of their property are and do not condone their members using other’s private property.

While I’m on a rant about calling people out I have another topic to discuss. Over the holiday weekend,

Sunday evening, between 7 PM and 11:30 PM, the newly painted stall walls of both men’s and ladies rooms in the bath house were vandalized by scratching the paint off the walls. The repair will be much more than to simply repaint the walls and the scratches will still show. The bath house was looking so good we could all be proud to send our guest there to use them. Not so proud anymore. Face it, what happened was flat out vandalism to our property and we will not tolerate it. So here’s your chance to step up and call some out, if anyone has any information please get with one of your board members and let’s put a stop to this senseless destruction of your property.

We all have the power to enforce our rules. We can and should find a way to confront the offender(s) in a spirit of love and not a spirit of hostility or hate. We are all a part of this community and we will all grow old together so let’s grow together as we grow older.
