he end of another year is nigh, and as we celebrate this holiday season we take a few moments to reflect on the events of the past few months. On the up side, this year has marked the birth of the first and only consumer affairs magazine in Ghana – WhichGhana. On the flip side, the year has been marked by persistent economic challenges and airline catastrophes. The loss of our dear President and crime continue to be our most shameful predicament.

There is, however, something that no challenge could conquer, no obstacle could stop this year, and that’s the spirit of the Ghanaian Consumers. Through all the difficult times, we have again proven that we are, without a doubt, among the most resilient, strong-willed people on Earth. We’ve weathered the storm yet again, and demonstrated that we do have what it takes to create for our-selves a nation we can all be proud of. Going forward, I would like to thank all our Contacts and Advertisers who con-tinue to engage with WhichGhana in a productive way. And of course a big thanks to all our readers who continue to robustly provide us with feedbacks, which are extremely valued.

We’ve also had a good response to our website and I would like to thank all those who have visited the website to register and get involved. We, at WhichGhana, renew our pledge to continue to be the most vocal consumer advocate in Ghana and the whole of Africa. With your support, we can create a better nation.

Finally, our hearts go out to all those experiencing difficulties of all types this holiday season. We ex-tend our sincere and warm wishes to all Ghanaian Consumers for a safe and peaceful festive season.

Memo to the New President IS THE DREAM STILL ALIVE?

he founder and first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah made his vision poignantly clear to the people of Ghana on Ghana’s Inde-pendence Day, 6th March 1957 and the whole of Africa when he said;

T

W H I C H G H A N A M A G A Z I N E | 06

‘The new African is ready to fight his

own battles and show that after all the

black man is capable of managing his

own affairs.

We are going to demonstrate to the world, to the other nations, that we are prepared to lay our

foundation - our own African personality.’

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah opened the doors of Ghana-ian politics to everyone no matter your ethnicity and broke down all barriers in Ghanaian politics as well as strengthen in us a nation of unity and pride. His dream was achieved through fighting for independence, claiming ownership of our re-sources and underscoring the need for us to take charge of our future.

Now, we would like to know whether our new leaders will follow through with Nkrumah’s vi-sion. He illustrated the best in African Science,

Technology, Education, Finance, the Arts, Industrialization, Sports, etc. Nkrumah as President invested wisely and his vision covered every human aspect as well as can be. He researched, spoke and wrote exten-sively about the nature of African wealth and how to unlock it to benefit the Afri-can world. These should serve as guiding principles for our new leaders; but will they follow through in mapping out Ghana’s de-velopmental and economic goals?

We have seen the deplorable state of our Health, Transport and Educational infra-structure; so we ask the question, what will our new president bring to the table which we do not already have? We have heard and seen and experienced over the years wordy manifestos and slogans but what will Mr. President do to make our lives better?

C onsumer Protection is not a one-way street. It is a process that involves consum-ers, service providers, producers and the government in a blend of roles and respon-sibilities. Therefore, for consumer protec-tion to exist and be effective, the following conditions must be satisfied:

Consumers must be aware of their rights and responsibilities.

Consumers must be responsible in the exercise of their rights.

Consumers must be aware of the ethi-cal consequences of their consumption.

Producers and Service Providers must be ethical in the conduct of their busi-ness.

Producers and Service Providers must be responsible for the consequences of selling shoddy goods and services.

Government must regulate the market-place through policy, laws and regula-tions.

Government must promote standards, Consumer Education and Protection.

Consumers need consumer education to build their capacity to act as rational and

responsible consumers in the market place.

Businesses need consumer education to build their capacity to become ethical and to serve consumer interest rather than to profiteer from them.

Even with the presence of consumer pro-tection advocates such as WhichGhana, consumers still have a responsibility of learning to read labels of products to check the ingredients, date of expiry, etc since no organization or law will do so for them at the point of purchase. Similarly, consumers are to read and understand contracts they are given to sign before appending their signatures.

Finally, consumers must make it their duty to raise complaints to organisations such as WhichGhana and also to register praises where good services are provided. It is our duty to protect ourselves as consumers.

TAKORADI Ghana’s oil boom city

ecently Takoradi has been identified as one of Africa’s cities expected to see sig-nificant growth in 2013 and beyond. Tako-radi, on Ghana’s western coast is dusting off her dance shoes to get ready for the good times.

Across Africa there are towns and cities experiencing rapid development on the back of newly discovered resources such as minerals, crude oil and natural gas. These towns and cities offer attractive op-portunities from a property development perspective – especially for hotel and re-tail developments. Such developments are evidenced on the Western edge of the Gha-naian city of Takoradi, where newly built villas with wide verandas are rapidly eating into green forest and farmland. Talking to a good friend of mine, an engineer working for an Italian company in Takoradi, she re-marked with a glint in her eyes, “Everything is changing in Takoradi these days, new hotels are springing up every time, restau-rants serving different dishes are growing in numbers”. She enthused, “In five years, I see Takoradi becoming one of the modern cities of the world, “I can imagine skyscrap-ers, six-lane highways and malls.” However, despite Takoradi’s newfound importance, businesses in the region have still not fully capitalised on the opportunities presented to them. For example businesses need to

R

attract tens of thousands of foreign visitors coming to Ghana every year. All these new Hotels, Restaurant, Shops and Shopping Malls springing up in the region must en-sure these visitors know about them, even before they arrive in Ghana.

In this regard, WhichGhana magazine has been working with local officials and businesses to help showcase the best of the regions products and services. With a circulation exceeding 15,000 copies and

IPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3

W H I C H G H A N A M A G A Z I N E | 24

In Terms of Specs, Performance, and Features, The Iphone 5 is Apple’s Best to Date; However How Does it Fare when

Compared with Samsung Galaxy S3?

DesignApple has taken aggressive measures to make the iPhone 5 as thin as possible. As a result it’s just 7.6mm thick, a full millimetre less than the Samsung Galaxy S3 - which is 8.6mm thick. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is also significantly larger than the iPhone 5, thanks to its massive 4.8in screen. It’s 71mm wide, while the iPhone 5 is around 58mm wide.

AccessoriesiPhone 5 - new-design Earpod headphones, new Lightning power connector. Samsung Galaxy S3 - microUSB charge cable, Samsung noise isolating IEM earphones, adapter. The power cable of the iP-hone 5 is also different, using the new 8-pin socket rather than the 30-pin type that has been in use for years. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is more ordinary in its approach, though no less useful.

ScreenEvery generation of iPhone since the original of the species back in 2007 uses the same size screen - 3.5in. That has all changed with the iPhone 5. It now has a widescreen 4in display of 1,136 x 640 pixels. The Samsung Galaxy S3 cares a lot less about how wide it is than the iPhone 5. With a gigantic 4.8in display, the Galaxy will be too wide for some hands - it’s a whopping 7.6cm across.

Power One area where the Samsung Galaxy S3 might beat the next iPhone is its processor’s figures. The Samsung Galaxy S3 uses the impressive Exynos 4412 chip, which has four cores and runs at 1.4GHz.

T E C H T A K E

Page 25: WhichGhana Third Edion (XMas Edition)

ConnectivityPerhaps the most earth-shattering change in the iPhone 5 is that it rejects the 30-pin connector used across iPods, iPads and iPhones in favour of a much-smaller 8-pin model. The problem with chang-ing connector is that the new iPhone will be incompatible with cur-rent iPhone docking accessories. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is pretty much the polar opposite in its approach. It lets you use microSD cards and uses the microUSB standard.

CameraAlthough many elements of the iPhone 5 have been improved huge-ly over its sensor and reams of features including image stabilisa-tion, touch focus, 1080p video capture and an LED flash predeces-sor, the camera has only been given a slight upgrade. It’s still an 8-megapixel sensor, and it still uses a pretty standard LED flash. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8-megapixel.

VerdictSamsung Galaxy S3 is more flexible, with expandable memory; However, the metal body of Apple’s phone feels a lot more premi-um, and is a much friendlier design for those with less than giant hands. And with the larger 4in screen, it won’t feel quite so tiny next to the Samsung Galaxy S3, either.

Shopping for ChristmasChristmas shopping can be fun and yet very hectic. A lot of buyers flood the market and shopping centres at the last min-ute grabbing as much as they can, look out for the best deals possible. Another year is just about to end.

Here are some shopping tips to help you enjoy your CHRISTMAS

Make a list and look out for shops with the best deals.

Do not wait for the Christmas and last minute rush, it is advisable to shop as early as you can. This gives you enough time to prepare for other activities before Christmas.

Take note that shopping in Makola the Central District in Accra, a few days before and during Christmas is a very tiresome task you may want to avoid. It is a very hectic situation with unmovable traffic. You will get the best of bargains but will have very little time to take a good look at the products you are about to purchase due to the hu-man flow of traffic.

Remember to look out for expiry dates on biscuits, drinks and sweets when shopping. Increase in prices, therefore always keep that in mind and make provision for price hikes. That is why it is advisable to begin shopping as early as possible to avoid the inconvenience on your budget.

he ballroom and foyer of The Movenpick, in the city centre of Accra was transformed into a fashion hub of print and an array of colour and style during the just ended Ghana Fashion and Design week. Day one started off rather late but our designers did not fail in giving us the wow fac-tor in their collections and this made up for its flaws. The models on the runway strutted African pride and beauty and quirky wild fashion. Designers for the day included Love April, Rebekah Opuni, Kachi De-signs, Sarah Duah, Duaba Serwa, Orange Culture, Konfidence, Maria Mia and Jil Boutique.

The exhibition hall and seminar was open to all both days and created a great network and interac-tive platform for buyers, models, press, designers and a vibrant mix from dif-ferent countries.

CAPTAINHOOKS

Tasty Treats at

RestaurantNo doubt you already have your favourite eateries, but have you ever visited Captain Hooks? If not, you should. I’m certain it will end up in your Top 10 restaurants in Accra.

Based at 4 Kakramadu Str., Cantonments, Accra (Near NAFTI), Captain Hooks is one of the most delightful restaurants that Whichghana has visited for a long time. As they say ... E dey be keke.

Captain Hooks is a medium sized restau-rant that seats 110 customers when full. Housed in a Spanish styled single storey building, it’s a welcome change from the usual high end restaurants in Accra who pride themselves on a feeling of exclusiv-ity. Not so in this establishment. On the day we visited we were greeted by one of Accra’s friendliest receptionists, and staff who were only too happy to make you feel special. It’s the smallest of courtesies that makes all the difference. You know what I mean. How many times have you gone out and been made to feel as if staff were doing you a favour whilst they take your money!!

WhichGhana had the opportunity to speak to the owner, David Bader and Manager, Jean Pierre Hollaus about the business. We were impressed to note that the values which informed their business, were self-evident.

“...If our people don’t care about custom-ers, then we don’t have a business...”

David and Jean-Pierre know what mat-ters to customers. Amongst their priorities are providing an efficient, friendly service, using the best suppliers and high quality produce, and delivering well prepared, fla-voursome dishes which are value for mon-ey; hence whilst prices may not be cheap, portions are generous. Coupled with an ambience which feels like you’re visiting good friends, means they have a formula hard to beat.

...what matters to our clients is excellent quality of food, great service and a clean and spotless place ... even going to the wash-room should be part of a positive experi-ence. We want customers to say ‘Wow’...”

Ambassadors, ministers, families, cou-ples, tourists and locals can all be found seated side by side enjoying hot plates of calamari, prawns, lobster, grouper, snapper and a medley of the best of Africa’s West Coast fishes. If you haven’t been to Captain Hooks as yet make a date to do so soon... and don’t forget to mention WhichGhana when you do. See you there ....Ye be hyia!

AFCON2013

5-NIGERIAThe Super Eagles hope to win their 3rd Af-rican cup of Nations after their last win, in Tunisia in 1994. After missing the last edi-tion they qualified against Liberia by beat-ing them 8-3 on aggregate.

The CaptainJoseph Yobo has been an outstanding play-er for the Eagles since taking the arm band from Nwankwo Kanu. The Fenerbahce centre back will be the key man to help lift the title and serve as a big inspiration.

4-MALIThe Eagles of Mali qualified for their 8th AFCON cup by defeating Botswana both home and away. They beat Botswana in Bamako and repeated the dose in Gabo-rone. Now, they seek to improve on their 3rd place finish which is their best in the history of AFCON.

The CaptainSeydou Keita has been captain of the side since 2010 when Fulham’s Mamadou Diara called it quits from international football. The former Lens, Marseille and Barcelona midfielder retired from international foot-ball somewhere last year only to bounce back and lead the Eagles to 3rd place in the 2012 AFCON in Gabon and Equato-rial Guinea. Keita who currently plays in the Chinese league for Dalian Aerbin is the main unifier in the team as he is highly re-spected by the players.

Who will be theKING?

History will be written on February 10, 2013 at Soccer City in Johannesburg, as the 29th (AFCON) Africa Cup of Nations comes to a climax and a winner is crowned.

AFCON is fast approaching and 16 teams aim to become the next continental champions. This takes place from 19 January to 10 February 2013, to be held in the 2010 World Cup host nation, South Africa.

3-ZAMBIAThe Chipolopolo’s of Zambia who are the defending champions of the tournament had to ride on luck to qualify for the 2013 edition after beating the Cranes of Uganda in a grueling penalty shoot out in Kampala.

The CaptainWOII Christopher Katongo who played for the relegated Chinese club Shanghai Construction is one of the dedicated skip-pers on the continent and the greatest in the country’s football history after Bwalya Kalushia. Going forward, they have a lead-er who can motivate his men and also de-liver when the going gets tough.

2-GHANAThe Black Stars of Ghana would be seeking to annex the trophy for the 5th time after they had been eluded in Libya in 1982. They still showed that they really meant business as they dispatched Malawi by beating them 2-0 in Accra and 1-0 in Lilongwe to book a place in the 2013 AFCON.

The CaptainAl Ain striker Asamoah Gyan was a couple of weeks ago appointed as the permanent captain of the side after acting in that ca-

pacity during the qualifying games with Malawi and he is expected to lead the team to glory. Gyan has taken over the mantle and Ghanaians will like to see him exhib-iting the same sense of patriotism, humil-ity and dedication which was exhibited by his predecessors Stephen Appiah and John Mensah in order to move the team for-ward. Asamoah is currently Ghana’s top striker, having scored 28 goals in 59 games since making his debut for the Black Stars against Somalia 9 years ago.

1-IVORY COASTTheir best ever was when the likes of Omar Ben Salah, Alain Gouamene, Diaby Ab-doulaye Traore, Sie Donald, Joel Tielhi helped them beat Ghana 12-11 in a mara-thon penalty shoot out in Senegal in 1992.The elephants qualified by taming the Teranga Lions 4-2 in Abidjan and 2-0 in Dakar to book their place in the event.

The CaptainTalismanic Didier Drogba who now plays for the Shanghai Shenhua of China is a real leader and captain of the elephants since 2006. The Chelsea legend is the main en-gine of the team and commands a lot of re-spect with more than 50 goals to his credit after deciding to play for Ivory Coast in 2004. Read more: www.whichghana.com
