Tasty toondaytime edition

by Amy HoltApparently breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but realistically do any of us see before 9am? Lunch, however, is a great way to procrastinate when you decide you need a break from work, or if the student loan comes in and you reckon you can afford to ditch the meal deals for a week. Although Starbucks and Eat4Less are great, here are some of my favourite independent cafes to go to in Newcastle.

If you’re not quite at Made in Chelsea level and want to go for a casual brunch then the all-day breakfast here is your answer. The Butterfly Cabinet always has people queuing out the door on most days of the week but it’s worth the wait. The English breakfast in the best way to cure a hangover without breaking the bank and the Eggs Benedict is pretty good too. The list of burgers is as long as your arm, including ‘The Ron Burgerdy’ (who doesn’t love a pun) and the menu also offers classics like the fish finger sandwich and chip butty.

Quilliam’s Bros is well worth the venture to the foreign land of Newcastle Uni. Quilliam’s is known for being a tea house and the selection of tea is never-ending; they have everything from Battenberg to Mango, or just a standard breakfast tea if you’re not too experimental with your brews. For food, I recommend ‘The Big Q’ which is beef brisket with burger sauce. The food also comes with roast potatoes which makes a change from the humble ready salted crisp. And if you’re not too carbed-up from the stotties then you won’t regret a salted caramel brownie.

If you’re looking for a milkshake as big as your head (who isn’t) then look no further than The Great British Cupcakery’s freakshakes. As the name suggests, this place has Bake Off tent vibes, with bunting and endless amounts of cake on offer. There’s definitely no half measures at this place - the milkshakes probably have enough calories to see you through the week and the thickness of the bread for sandwiches could wedge a door open but it’s well worth it, even if just for the Insta goals.

This is hands down my favourite place to go for lunch in Newcastle. It’s also mum-approved if you need somewhere slightly more upmarket to take your parents when they come to visit. The paninis are delicious, especially the chicken, bacon, cheddar and chilli jam one (all of my favourite things in panini form.) The platters are also a winner and the tray bakes are available to take away if you don’t have room for pudding at the time. Fun fact: I also saw Colin Jackson (CBE and Olympic silver medallist) there so it’s not-quite-A-List celebrity worthy.

This dark comedy series is about Rebecca (Rachel Bloom), who’s impulsively left her successful job and life in New York to be near her childhood sweetheart Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) in West Covina. The only thing is, Josh now has a girlfriend and can’t find out that she moved there for him, resulting in ridiculous but oh so relatable efforts to win him over.

While this sounds like every rom com ever, this series addresses some big issues like mental health, sexuality and abortion in a light-hearted and progressive way. It is a musical but don’t be put off by this, it’s incredibly self-aware and the songs are so catchy!

Oh my goodness, is it 2018 already? I can’t believe it! I’m so old now! It’s time for the second semester and exams and I’m super super stressed! If you read any of the previous lines and thought something to the effect of ‘Oh my God that’s literally me’ then I have some good news for you. I have some top drawer advice to make the start of your new year and second semester easier and more productive. Let’s get started, shall we?

Pace Yourself

Find balance

Avoid distraction

Study hard

Firstly, the countdown to the end of your year of Uni can make it feel like everything is moving too fast and so you begin to rush. Opportunities will pass you by, deadlines will creep up out of

nowhere and whole weeks seem to just come and go. There’s just never enough time to get it all done. The best advice I could give for this is to simply pace yourself. Get all your deadlines and lectures in the diary from the start of the year and plan out when you’re going to do the work to give yourself plenty of time for all your targets.

There may be those among you that think speed of movement is not the top priority for students. We’ll have to agree to disagree for now but in

anticipation of such a reaction I placed the pacing tip first so that I could save the serious stuff for later. Studying is central to the whole ‘student’ thing we’ve got going on here. Some courses are more intense than others but we all have to put in the hours to study our course... ...mates. Study your coursemates. Think about it. You’re in Uni to succeed, to graduate,

The life of a student is a tough one. Between walking at the correct speed and learning your course material in a class full of people you can’t trust it can be really hard to find the balance

between work and play. Your time can’t be split as simply as 50/50, you’d never find balance doing that. All you need to do is prioritise. You can’t attend all of the seshes all of the time but you also can’t spend all of your spare hours studying. You couldn’t possibly find your balance doing that. There are plenty of tools that can help you find it though.

I personally find online banking to be the way forward. Simply log in and you can find your

This next point is so important that I can’t believe I left it this long to mention. You cannot afford to get distracted. With so much on your plate as a student, every time you stop

eating, you risk your metaphorical food of learning going cold. Nobody likes cold food. Apart from ice cream. Oh, and leftover pizza. While we’re at it, many sandwiches are cold. So are salads. Man, there’s a lot of cold food out there. Bad choice of metaphor and hunger pangs aside, time is of the essence and as I just proved there it does not take much to distract the average student. Procrastinating is an absolute craft and although I feel I have mastered the art form, I know for a fact it’ll serve me no good in getting the degree I so desire. The worst thing is, a distraction can come from

balance in just a couple of clicks. Alternatively just go to a cash machine and print out a statement. Boom. Balance found.

Better yet, once you have your balance you can see just how little money you have and give your anxiety something to worry about that isn’t correctly prioritising your time. Now THAT is a difficult problem I couldn’t dream of solving.

anywhere. The act of simply asking a friend about an assignment can very quickly turn into high intensity meme-based warfare. A quick break on YouTube or Netflix could go deep into the early hours of the morning. You know, even something as simple as... ...oh my. Even the simple act of this magazine is distracting you. You need to be studying! Put this magazine down right now and hit the damn books, son… and then pick up the magazine again and read

Have some common senseAllow me to break the illusion for anyone still taking this seriously. None of this is meant to actually help you.

Well, maybe that bit about walking speed holds some deeper truth but that aside, there was no advice to be consumed here. The whole piece was in fact a cunning deception to make a bigger point. You are going to freak out and that’s fine. You don’t need to listen to the delusions in your head or the bad advice of a student magazine writer. Use common sense to do the best you can and allow yourself a mistake or two. You’ll never learn anything if you’re always right and there’s no fun to be had in that. Just keep on walking through life, working hard and taking as much in as you can. Just do it at the right speed. If not for yourself, do it for me.

the rest of the amazing articles. Wait, isn’t writing this article also distracting me from my course? Right, I need to go. Come up with the fifth point for yourself. Something along the lines of eating your greens, taking your vitamins, saying your prayers or not doing drugs. The hell if I care, I have a course to study for!

to make something of yourself. Your coursemates seek to do the very same thing. The proverbial cream always rises to

the top but there’s only so much cream one can have. It’s quite rich actually. This means there’s limited spots open and all those people in your lecture are out to grab them. What are they actually doing when they ask to compare notes? Keep those eyes peeled my friends. Perhaps I’m going a little over the top here but I’m not accusing anyone of anything truly heinous. Some people will do anything to get ahead of the game and I, for one, refuse to not give you the best advice I have. Study your coursemates hard and you’ll know everything. Suddenly you know the best group to team up with to ace an assignment. You’ll have the info on who fancies who and become the trusted matchmaker. Knowledge is power folks. Study hard, folks.

Luckily for us, Pixar have distracted themselves from the now and looked back on their greatest film ever. Finally fans are being given the sequel they’ve craved for fourteen years, and we’ve already been promised more of the adorable Jack Jack (now with powers) as well as the instantly-recognisable funky jazz soundtrack. But if Edna Mode doesn’t feature, I will demand a refund. Don’t let me down, Pixar!

The sassy Merc with a Mouth is back, played by everyone’s wannabe husband, Ryan Reynolds. This time there’s hope for some hilarious back-and-forth with Josh Brolin’s Cable. Hopefully this one is as much of a fan-pleaser as the original. Also, more Careless Whisper please.

It’s hard to imagine someone other than Harrison Ford playing the charismatic, slick-talking smuggler with lustrous hair, but Alden Ehrenreich (I know, I had to Google him too) is going to give it a go. Will it be any good? We won’t find out until December.

I hadn’t realised until now that this is the sequel I’ve always dreamed of. Abba’s songs are absolutely iconic – admit it, you’ve already got a few tunes in your head – and with the all-star cast, including Meryl Streep and Colin Firth, returning, it’s sure to be a feel-good flick for all the family.

I love any excuse to return to the Wizarding World, and this film is giving me infinite reasons to be excited. Jude Law as Dumbledore? YES. The adorable Eddie Redmayne returning as Newt Scamander? YES. An exploration of the origin story of the most dangerous and dark wizard until Voldemort came along? Yes, and when can I buy my ticket? November? THAT’S SUCH A LONG WAIT. WAAAA.

Another one for the Marvel fanbois, this epic is set to feature the ENTIRE Marvel Cinematic Universe in one film. Who doesn’t want to see Thanos battle it out against the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man and Ant-Man? (I didn’t say their names were particularly imaginative). This film has been in the making since the first Iron Man film so hopes are high. I mean, it had

5 GREAT SONGS OF 2017

1. The Killers - The Man

4. Lorde - Green Light

2. Kendrick Lamar - Humble

5. Tyler, The Creator - 911/Mr Lonely

3. Dizzee Rascal - Space

You should also listen to...

Possibly the greatest outing from the Killers (sorry Mr Brightside fans). An incredible vocal performance by Brandon Flowers mixed with a powerful instrumental makes this a show-stopping anthem. I mean, this song is just cool, easily the coolest song of the year.

Kendrick Lamar seemingly can do no wrong in the past few years. Lyrically brilliant, musically sound, ‘Humble’ is the cherry on top of his monumental year.

Honestly, 2017 was such a good year for grime music that this whole list could have been compiled of grime. Instead, I went with a tune that is grime at its finest. Dizzee Rascal demonstrates his lyrical genius in a song that is the best of grime this year.

A much more lively outing from Lorde. Brilliantly produced, with an exceptional vocal performance, this is one of the more pleasant surprises from this year. Lorde shows how great she can be with this tune.

The ultimate chill out track. Masterfully produced with soothing backing vocals make this song perfect for lazy days. An elegant outing from Tyler, The Creator.

As we launch ourselves into 2018, it’s only right and just that we take a look at the finest memes that 2017 had to offer. On the previous pages, you’ll find your meme-of-the-month 2018 calendar, which highlights what was big at that time last year. As not all our favourites made the cut, here are a few highlights from the last twelve months:

Special Recognition:Gemma Collins: This TOWIE star rose to true fame in 2017 when she reached the status of actual meme queens. Where would she be without the ‘me-mays?’ And on top of all that, she fell off a stage. Classic.Michelle Obama: The facial expressions that launched a

thousand memes, Michelle Obama at Trump’s inauguration was definitely a golden time. There were several shots of her throughout the ceremony that captured how most of the world was probably feeling at the time - annoyed and disappointed.

Cash me outside, how bow dah?: Wiser words were never spoken. A rebellious thirteen-year-old girl who featured on an episode of Dr Phil managed to take over the internet with her strong accent and serious attitude problem.

R.I.P:Kermit: I don’t know about you, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Kermit.

Dancing hotdog: Ah yes, the Snapchat filter that brightened everyone’s day. This cute cartoon

had dance moves for days, and we know you’ve all tried to copy him once or twice.Cracking open a cold one with the lads: This meme kept us fresh in the warmer months, but in true British summer fashion, it was short-lived.

Top Trends:Love Island: Despite having been around since its first series in 2005, this year the ITV2 show erupted onto the headlines from the peripherals of British consciousness, largely thanks to passionate Twitter arguments about everything from Camilla’s feminism to Kem’s hair.

Stranger Things: This show’s wildfire success only kept on growing with series 2, mostly propelled by Steve and his babysitting skills.

Mocking SpongeBob: A chicken impression by everyone’s favourite sponge was used to take savagery to new levels in 2017.

The newest installment of The Walking Dead gives the show’s title a new meaning. No longer referring to the zombies, the name seems more applicable to the show itself. As the last few seasons of the show have gone by, it seems less and less happens every week; we’re spending our time waiting for something that rarely pays off. The stakes are no longer high during the series’ run. We now know nothing dramatic will happen if the episode is not a mid-season or full season finale, which takes any fun or anticipation out of watching week in week out.

The first half of season 8, which has just concluded, seems to repeat itself every episode. There is a setup of some form of confrontation that never

actually comes to fruition. Most often, the confrontation occurs with both parties (Rick/Negan) well hidden behind barriers, meaning there is no real threat, and if an important character does get injured, it’s never life threatening. On top of that, there is the pretty obvious absence of Michonne for the majority of these 8 episodes, with little to no explanation, or even mention of her, while she’s gone. This is just one of many strange plays with characters this season, the other coming right at the end of the mid-season finale. As is customary now with the show, the “big event” comes at the very end and seems to justify or even explain all the events which predate it. Not this time. What occurs is truly shocking, but not the good kind of shocking; more the confused kind. Essentially, they kill off a main character seemingly for no reason. This death will not propel the rest of the characters into an act of revenge as it was not anyone’s fault in particular. It doesn’t serve the story either positively or negatively, it just happens. That sentence seems to now be an apt explanation of the show; things just happen. Any form of realism, in a show about zombies, I realise, has largely dissipated. Let’s not even talk about Eugene’s “alcoholism” or that CGI tiger.

What better way to overcome those New Year Blues than with some good old comfort food! This recipe is a perfect solution for any New Year’s resolutions. Whether you’re trying to cut down on spending, calories or meat, you’ll love this comforting yet healthy pasta dish. You could impress a few friends with a recipe full of flavour or make a batch for yourself to get you through those late nights in the library.

Servings: 4-5What you will need:● 1 packet of mushrooms ● 2 packets mushroom tortellini (stuffed pasta - I always use Asda’s 2 for £2.50)● 4 or 5 spring onions● 1 clove of garlic● 1 small tin garden peas● 1 packet of green beans● 1 pot of double cream● 2 vegetable stock cubes● 1 tablespoon of cooking oil● Salt and pepper to season

Once the mushrooms have shrunk and there is plenty of juice in the pan add the double cream and garden peas

5. Leave for 5 minutes then add the vegetable stock cubes and salt and pepper 6. Wack up the heat and let it all boil away for 10 mins, stirring occasionally 7. In a separate pan add boiling water and the pasta at a medium heat on the hob 8. Leave the pasta to cook for 5 minutes or until it has expanded fully9. Drain and add to the sauce and veg for 2 minutes before serving.

Creamy Mushroom Pasta!

Hello 2018, hello food!

Serving suggestions: This goes down a treat with a handful of grated cheese!

Alternatively: Let it cool and chill in the fridge until needed. Reheat in the microwave or a pan and eat within 4 days of making it.

WHICHWINTER

BOOTS ?

Winter is my favourite time of year; we can get our hats and scarves out, and most importantly, the boots. Trainers and flimsy footwear are no longer appropriate (unless we want to fall to the floor whenever we step outside). So we dig around in our wardrobes or pop down to the shops to find our new winter boots. I’ve looked around and found this year’s best winter boots for women and men:

Firstly, for both men and women the all-time favourite seems to be Chelsea boots. These are one of my favourite boots as they work well with most clothing and also have a good grip on snow and ice. Some of the best pairs I own are from Clarks, as they are a comfortable fit and have a great, solid rubber sole. They have a range of different colours and choice of materials, including leather and suede. At a reasonable price of £69

these boots will see you through the winter months.

Another favourite boot this year, which has remained a favourite for many years, are Doctor Martens. These boots have had a rise in interest over the past few years and for very good reason. Although at first the boots cut and rub your feet, once they’ve been worn in these are some of the comfiest shoes you’ll own, and will definitely keep you on your feet throughout winter. As they have become such a big brand there are endless styles you can buy. They may seem pricey, but considering the years you get out of them, they certainly pay for themselves.

Wondering around Northumberland Street desperately searching for Christmas presents I couldn’t help but notice the amount of shops who’ve begun to stock Ugg Boots once again. I’m sure many of us remember our childhood days wearing Uggs all the time and the comfort they gave us, despite the fact that the sole did not last very long. A seems, however, that Ugg have made the soles more robust, making them better to walk on ice and also ensuring they don’t wear away. Thanks to this they’ve

become more practical and certainly will keep your feet warm with the fur lining.

For men the preferred footwear of the past few years seems to be desert boots. These shoes certainly are practical as they look good for casual daily business and for a night out. Ranging in different colours and often being very affordable means these boots are perfect for the winter and summer months. The shoes look great with jeans but also can be worn

with smart trousers if you’re going for a more dressed-up look. Be careful with the soles of these shoes as some may not have the best grip, but you’ll look stylish as you slide on the pavements.

Five things you should do before you finish uni in Newcastle

Newcastle is a vibrant city, well-known for its nightlife. But it has so much more to offer, and here are five things you should explore...

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

The Baltic: The Baltic is a contemporary

art gallery just over the River Tyne in Gateshead. It offers art exhibitions that change regularly. These aren’t just paintings but something I, who has no experience of art whatsoever, would call ‘off the wall.’ It also has THE best view in Newcastle. A view over the city skyline and down the river at Newcastle’s many bridges is incredible, and even more so if you catch the right time of day as the sun sets. Don’t worry about spending money on this trip either; it’s free to get in, but does ask for a voluntary donation. They also have a very funky gift shop.

The Quayside: While at the Baltic, why not cross back over the

bridge and check out Newcastle’s Quayside? This is a bustling place that always has something going on. If you’re not too hungover from the night before, there is a market every Sunday that sells everything from second hand CDs, fancy mirrors and stunning landscape pictures to

Tynemouth: If you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, the little town of Tynemouth offers the perfect getaway. The long sandy beach is lovely on a fun summer day or for a winter walk. If you want the best fish and chips, there are many shops to choose from but the more traditional Friary by the Priory is my number one. Only a short metro ride away, and less than £6 for a day return, it is well worth the trip. They too have a market on a Sunday, right on the station platform.

N e w c a s t l e R e s t a u r a n t

Week: This happens twice a year and it is not to be missed! Many restaurants take part in these events and, if you are a bit strapped for cash, it offers an inexpensive way to eat out, with a lot of places having two-courses-for-a-tenner deals on. So, if you know a restaurant you always wanted to try but could never afford, now is your chance! Keep an eye on social media for when the dates are announced.

Live music: There are so many venues in Newcastle that it may seem

overwhelming. The bigger acts are more likely to go to the Metro Radio Arena, with smaller acts coming to the 02 Academy. This is a great venue that gives you a good view no matter where you are; if you’re lacking in height like me, I’d recommend the seated balcony. However, if you like a more intimate experience, places like The Cluny in Ouseburn may be for you.

the scrumptious food of many different cultures. If you’re lucky enough, you may even catch the Millennium Bridge blink to let a tall ship through. However, if you really want to catch it move, they publish the times at the bridge itself. There are also some cosy and lively bars down by the quayside at the Ouseburn end. Tyne Bar and The Free Trade Inn are two of my favourite bars in Newcastle. Free Trade has a fab beer garden that looks down the river and at the city, while Tyne Bar offers live music.

Realistic New Year’s Resolutions by Megan Jaram

TIP 1:

TIP 2:

TIP 4:

TIP 5:

TIP 6:TIP 3:

Stop aiming for that unrealistic body and, instead, learn to appreciate your own. Treat yourself and indulge because you deserve it. Eat wholesome foods such as fruit and vegetables because you love your body and you love to feed it with healthy nutrition. Exercise because you love to push yourself to your best abilities. Learn to love your body and not hate it by comparing yourself to others.

Get! Enough! Sleep! Please, give yourself time to rest. Sleep is vital, especially for students. You will notice a significant difference on both your mental and physical health if you are deprived of it. Don’t just do it for yourself, but for others. You will no longer be grouchy and miserable to be around. Watch yourself change.

Get more out of the world. Go to places you haven’t visited before. Create a list of quirky cafés you’d like to visit (for example) and tick them off as you go to them all.

We all have the same resolution, but it never seems to happen - exercise more. But, be realistic with yourself. Create an actual schedule and stick to it so it becomes routine. Find a gym partner; you will be more motivated if you have someone to exercise with you. Create achievable goals weekly so that you won’t be put off.

Unfollow toxic people on social media who dampen your mood. Social media is a fake apparatus of jealousy and negativity. In certain studies, it has been found that, out of all the social media platforms, Instagram is the worst for mental health. Seriously, unfollow the famous celebrities that make your life feel insignificant so you can allow yourself to stop comparing your life to theirs.

Practise self-care. This is aimed at both genders - don’t think this doesn’t relate to everyone. Self-care is giving yourself compliments, taking care of yourself, creating a night-time pamper routine, exercising, resting and knowing when you’re pushing yourself too hard. Not every single day has to be productive. Taking a day off is not a weakness. It is a strength to recognise your own mental health and recover. This lifestyle can

be exhausting and self-care is being sensible enough to know that you are the most important person in your journey.
