Breaking into a Cannabis CareerThe cannabis industry has been growing rapidly in recent years. Today, 32 states have approved medical marijuana and 10 have approved recreational marijuana. Many other states have ballot initiatives and legislative motions in place which could change the legality of marijuana even further in the near future. As a result, marijuana businesses are opening across the country, and each of those businesses needs employees.

Marijuana Job GrowthBetween January 1, 2017 and August 1, 2018, the number of marijuana job listings in the United States grew by 690%. In 2019, the number of open marijuana jobs is expected to climb by another 220%. New Frontier Data predicts that the marijuana industry will employ 400,000 people by 2021.

Marijuana Job OpportunitiesThe cannabis industry offers a variety of job opportunities for hard-working, motivated employees. Whether you want to work at an agricultural site, in a business office, or in a retail setting, cannabis companies are hiring for those types of positions and more.

On a high level, there are five ways to join the cannabis industry as an employee:

1. Cultivation

2. Manufacturing and Processing

3. Testing

4. Dispensing and Retail

5. Ancillary (Marijuana-Related) Businesses

This ebook introduces you to many (but not all) of the job opportunities available to workers in all four areas and at all levels of experience—from entry-level to executive. You’ll also learn critical steps to position yourself as a strong candidate for a cannabis career.

Cultivation is the first stop on the cannabis supply chain. Cultivators are thefamers and nurseries that grow and harvest cannabis plants, so manufacturersand processors can turn them into products to be sold to consumers throughmedical marijuana dispensaries or recreational marijuana retail locations.

Cannabis cultivation is highly regulated through state laws that differ from onestate to another. Only licensed cultivators are allowed to grow marijuana andaside from the strict growing laws, cannabis cultivation operations run similarlyto other agricultural crops.

As a result, job opportunities in cannabis cultivation include traditionalagricultural business roles as well as cannabis-specific compliance roles. Thischapter introduces you to several common roles you’re likely to see as youconduct your job search in the cannabis industry.

Master Grower

A Master Grower is usually a horticulturist or botanist and is responsible for theentire grow operation. To be hired as a Master Grower, you need to haveexperience growing marijuana plants and large crops. You’ll be required tomanage the technology that supports the grow-house, planting, cropcultivation, pest control, and cloning.

Master Growers are farmers with agricultural experience and understand howto grow various strains of marijuana. They may be required to work indoorsand/or outdoors depending on the grow operation.

Assistant Grower or Cultivation Supervisor

The Assistant Grower (also called a Cultivation Supervisor) is in charge of theentire grow team. If the grow operation is large, the Assistant Grower couldhave one or more workers to help manage everything on a daily basis.

If the Master Grower is not available, the Assistant Grower fills in. He or she isalso responsible for training the grow team.

Typically, Technicians report to the Operations Manager, who is responsible forthe day-to-day operation of the facility. Some knowledge of growingtechniques might be required to land a Technician job.

Many roles in a cultivation facility (as well as with manufacturers, testing labs, dispensaries, and retailers) include entry-level, assistant, manager, anddirector-level positions. For example, it’s not unusual to see job postings forTechnician I, Technician II, Technician III, and so on. Similarly, you might see jobpostings for a Compliance Associate, Assistant Compliance Manager,Compliance Manager, Compliance Director, and Chief Compliance Officer.

Manufacturers process the cannabis from cultivators into products thatmarijuana dispensaries and retailers can sell to patients and consumers. Theproducts can include edibles, tinctures, concentrates, topicals, and more. Inaddition, manufacturers and processors package marijuana products based onstrict regulations that differ in each state.

Jobs at marijuana manufacturing facilities are similar in many ways tomanufacturing jobs in other industries. Many products sold in the marijuanaindustry are infused with cannabis using extraction and manufacturingtechniques that have been around and used in other industries for years.

New processes and innovative equipment has been and is still being developedfor the marijuana industry, but the types of jobs you’re likely to find inmarijuana manufacturing will sound familiar to you.

ExtractorThe Extractor (or Master Extractor) uses CO2, butane, nitrogen, or other non-volatile extraction methods to make concentratres from the trimmed parts ofcannabis plants. Those concentrates can be sold to patients and consumers, orthey can be used to infuse into edible marijuana products.

Extractors typically have a lot of experience in a scientific field as well as inextraction processes in general. The process is dangerous and requires a highlevel of skill and knowledge, so the salary for Extractors can be quite high.

Extractors are typically supported by Extraction Technicians, and AssistantExtractors. They might have a Ph.D. in their field and understand both thedangers of extraction as well as how to maximize the potency of eachextraction.

Sales RepresentativeCannabis manufacturers produce a variety of marijuana products that theyneed to sell. To that end, Sales Representatives are hired to visit dispensariesand retail stores, build relationships, and secure shelf space at as manydistribution points as possible.

Sales Representatives usually report to a Territory Manager or RegionalDirector depending on the size of the company and how many states itsproducts are sold in. The Territory Manager is responsible for making sureeach Sales Representative in an assigned area meets necessary quotas, so thecompany is profitable.

Many states that have legalized medical and/or recreational marijuana requirethat marijuana products be tested before being sold. Testing labs may or maynot have to be licensed by the state.

Depending on the state’s laws, a testing lab will test marijuana samples fromcultivators and manufacturers to ensure they include the legally allowedamounts of active cannabinoids (namely, THC and CBD) but don’t includepesticides or other contaminants (i.e., constituents it shouldn’t include).

Working in a cannabis testing lab is similar to working in any other testing labfor a highly-regulated product. A lab is a scientific setting, so the workenvironment is quite different from a cultivation or manufacturing facility.

Laboratory AnalystLaboratory analysts are scientists—typically chemists. They are responsible forthe actual testing of cannabis samples to confirm the samples don’t includepesticides or heavy metals (such as lead). Lab analysts also ensure only thelegally allowed amounts of cannabinoids are present in the samples.

Laboratory TechnicianLaboratory Technicians (also called Sampling Technicians) assist Lab Analysts ina scientific capacity by preparing samples for testing, staging and labelingincoming and outgoing vials, handling documentation, and cleaning up the lab.

The technician role is a great opportunity for someone with a science educationbut little or no experience to enter the cannabis industry.

Laboratory ManagerThe Laboratory Manager oversees all operations of the lab to make sure itcomplies with all local, state, and federal regulations. It’s also the LabManager’s responsibility to maintain smooth operations of the lab.Furthermore, the Lab Manager is responsible for all lab equipment, day-to-dayoperations of the lab, and staff training.

Laboratory DirectorThe Laboratory Director manages the lab’s staff and is responsible for creatingdaily production schedules and meeting those schedules. When problems arise, the Lab Director will make the final decision to resolve them so schedules aremet.

In addition, the Lab Director leads all quality assurance and quality controlinitiatives.

Intake CoordinatorAn Intake Coordinator performs a variety of duties from answering phones toensuring intake orders comply with local and state regulations. He or she assistswith ordering, receiving, and inventorying samples for the lab, creates invoicesfor clients, and ensures accuracy and compliance in all transactions.

Reporting to the Lab Manager or Lab Director, the Intake Coordinator at amarijuana lab also ensures samplers are following all standard operatingprocedures as well as regulations, and he or she records errors anddiscrepancies for samplers to correct. This is a diverse role that can give a workerexcellent knowledge about how multiples aspects of a marijuana testing laboperate.

Field SamplerThe Field Sampler performs on-site field sampling pick-ups and interfaces withboth clients and the laboratory. Field Samplers must collect detailed data in thefield based on strict regulations and standard operating procedures.

Sample collection is only one part of the Field Sampler’s job. He or she also hasto build relationships with clients and provide excellent customer service whilemaintaining client confidentiality. Field Samplers usually report to theLaboratory Director.

There are thousands of cannabis dispensaries and retailers across the UnitedStates, and many are actively looking for employees. If you’re comfortableworking in a fast-paced sales environment, then working in a dispensary or at amarijuana retailer might be right for you.

It’s important to understand that cannabis dispensaries and retailers mustfollow strict local, state, and federal laws. As a result, you’ll have to follow veryspecific rules and procedures, or the dispensary or retailer could lose itslicense. While the marijuana industry might still have a reputation of beingcarefree, the laws are not, and you must comply with them.

If you’re ready to learn the rules and help patients and consumers in amarijuana dispensary or retail location, check out the jobs below to get an ideaof some of the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

BudtenderBudtenders are the sales people of a marijuana dispensary or retailer. Similarto a sales position in a retail store or a patient care consultant in a pharmacy, abudtender talks to patients and customers to learn about their problems andneeds, and then helps them choose the right products in order to make sales.

Budtenders need to be extremely knowledgeable about the products they’reselling and adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations. They also need tobe personable and provide excellent customer service.

Dispensary (or Retail) ManagerThe Dispensary Manager (called a Retail Manager for adult-use marijuanastores) oversees the day-to-day operations of the dispensary or store. Thisincludes hiring, training and managing staff, communicating with vendors, andmanaging money and inventory.

Dispensary (or Retail) Managers are required to know all local and state lawsthat could affect the dispensary or store. Many Dispensary (or Retail) Managershave previous experience managing retail locations.

Delivery DriverDispensaries and retailers that offer delivery of marijuana products to patientsand customers need drivers to make those deliveries. However, MarijuanaDelivery Drivers are expected to do more than just drop off packages ofmarijuana products. They also have to confirm the recipient’s identity and age, maintain required paperwork, and stay compliant with all regulations.

Delivery Drivers must have clean driving records. They be hired to work fordispensaries and retailers or for third-party cannabis delivery companies.

Security GuardSecurity is critical to marijuana dispensaries and retailers for a variety ofreasons, one of which is the fact that many dispensaries and retailers operateall-cash businesses since it can be difficult for them to open traditional bankaccounts.

Security guards are needed to maintain a presence at the dispensary orretailer’s location, and they might be expected to be present for deliveries(both incoming and outgoing). In addition to dispensaries and retailers, cannabis cultivators, manufacturers, and testing labs also need security, soworking as a security guard in the marijuana industry means you could havemobility, flexibility, and variety in your work.

Receptionist or GreeterThe Receptionist role in a marijuana dispensary or retail store can go by avariety of titles: Greeter, Patient Care Coordinator, Patient Advocate, and more. That’s because the person in this role rarely simply answers phones and directspeople to browse or wait until a sales associate or budtender is available tohelp them. Instead, the Receptionist often completes a variety of patient (orcustomer) intake procedures.

By greeting patients or customers and asking questions to learn about theirwants and needs for their cannabis purchase, the Receptionist is able toanswer questions, guide the patient or customer to certain sections of thestore for targeted browsing, and pass on this information to the sales associateor budtender when he or she is available, which saves time and makes thesales process work more efficiently. This is an important customer service role.

In an ancillary cannabis job, you could work for a cannabis company or for acompany that sells its products and services to a cannabis company. Forexample, cannabis companies need office supplies, equipment, personnelmanagement, recruiting support, advertising, legal help, and more.

None of these jobs require that you come into contact with cannabis plants orproducts. Instead, you’ll fill a business role just as you would in a non-cannabiscompany. Some examples are described below.

AccountantEvery cannabis business needs someone to manage their finances and books. An accountant tracks the business’ money and works to minimize the business’tax liability. In the cannabis industry, where taxes are extremely high anddeductions are very limited, this is an incredibly important role. It’s essentialthat cannabis businesses get help from experienced accountants whounderstand the industry.

Some cannabis businesses hire and employ accountants and other financialroles while others outsource accounting. Either way, it’s an excellent way for asavvy accountant or even a talented bookkeeper to get involved in themarijuana industry.

TrainerAs the marijuana industry grows, businesses need more employees andemployees with more diverse and advanced skill sets to help them grow. Witheach new hire comes a learning curve, which is why it’s so important to havetraining programs in place and trainers to provide the instruction.

Part of each employee’s onboarding process should be training to understandthe cannabis industry as well as to learn the company’s policies andprocedures. In addition, ongoing training should be offered to keep employeescurrent on regulations, new products, new processes, and so on. If you’re anexperienced trainer, you might be able to get a job working for a cannabiscompany or for a company that offers training programs to cannabiscompanies.

MarketerDue to the many laws limiting how cannabis businesses can market and advertisetheir products and services, it’s extremely challenging for them to effectivelypromote their brands and drive awareness and sales. They need help from expertmarketers.

If you have the knowledge and skills, you might be able to work for a cannabiscompany or a cannabis marketing agency to provide the services that will helpthem grow.

AttorneyThe cannabis industry is highly-regulated and continually changing. Everymarijuana company needs an attorney on staff or available at a moment’s noticeto help them navigate the confusing laws and requirements. In fact, they needseveral different types of attorneys.

First, marijuana businesses need attorneys who specialize in business, but that’sjust the beginning. They also need attorneys that focus on the cannabis industry,on personnel issues, and so much more. If you’re an attorney, a job might bewaiting for you in the cannabis industry.

Information Technology SupportEvery cannabis company uses technology—from desktop computers to point-of-sale terminals and everything in between. All of that technology needs to bemaintained and fixed if something goes wrong.

Larger cannabis companies will have one or more IT experts on staff, but smallercompanies typically outsource IT support. Either way, you could work for or withone of these cannabis companies if you have the right IT knowledge andexperience.

Personnel and Human Resources SupportHiring and firing, managing vacation and sick time, and providing benefits arethings that a human resources department handles in large companies. That’salso the case in large cannabis companies, but smaller companies tend to handleit themselves or outsource to vendors that specialize in different functions suchas payroll administration or benefits administration.

It’s up to you to decide whether you want to work for a cannabis company or athird-party vendor. Weigh the positives and negatives and start looking foropenings. Even if you have no experience in the cannabis industry, yourpersonnel and human resources experience can easily transfer to a differentindustry—even a highly-regulated industry.

The average salary in the cannabis industry increased by 16.1% between 2017and 2018, and more cannabis companies are offering higher salaries to rewardemployees with deep experience and education. This is good news for everyonewho wants to work in the industry.

However, salaries in the cannabis industry in most of the United States are stilllower than comparable jobs in other industries, and benefits packages are lesscomprehensive. Don’t let that scare you away though. If you like the excitementof a young, growing industry, then the cannabis industry might be right for you.

SalariesCannabis job salaries vary significantly from one state to another and even fromone city to another. Cannabis businesses in states with more mature marijuanamarkets and states that have legalized recreational marijuana are more likely topay higher salaries. Salary also varies based on supply and demand. If there area lot of marijuana businesses in the same area looking for employees, salariescould be higher since there could be more jobs than interested workers.

Of course, salaries also vary by position and years of experience. For example, ina cultivation facility, it’s not unusual for a Trimmer to make $20,000-$30,000 peryear while a Master Grower could make $70,000-$125,000 per year. In amanufacturing facility, Packagers and Delivery Drivers will probably make$25,000-$40,000 per year, but a Master Extractor could make up to $80,000 peryear or more. In a dispensary, a receptionist will make around $20,000 eachyear while a Budtender will make around $25,000-$30,000 per year. On theother hand, the Dispensary Manager could make up to $60,000 every year.

More marijuana businesses are offering employee benefits, and those benefitspackages are becoming more comprehensive each year. According to data fromStatista.com, 48% of workers in the cannabis industry did not get benefits of anykind in 2017.

Of those workers who did get benefits, the benefits offered to them in 2017included: paid vacation time (to 45% of workers), paid sick days (to 42% ofworkers), maternity leave (to 29% of workers), paid family leave (to 21% ofworkers), paternity leave (to 19% of workers), workplace nursery or nurserylinked with workplace (7% of workers), and financial help with child care (6% orworkers).

EducationMany jobs in the marijuana industry don’t require a college degree, but higher-level and higher-paid jobs usually do. Scientific jobs may even require doctoratedegrees. However, this is a new industry, so while it’s important to have a formaleducation related to your job, it’s also important to have verifiable educationabout the cannabis industry.
