NEWS

Friends of Haigh Country Park

A pioneering local group of 170 members of the community have been working hardtogether to try and bring Haigh Country Park back to its former glory. Lots of the amenitiesat Haigh Hall have slowly disappeared over the years through lack of Funding and otherissues. Who remembers the famous Haigh Hall Zoo, miniature village, crazy golf and theswimming pool?!

The group live locally and are passionate about the beautiful Country Park. They haverecently submitted an application and petition to The People’s Funding for new playequipment that is suitable for all ages, as the current play area is dated and some sayunsafe. The group has spent a lot of time and effort getting the Crazy Golf ready to reopen, arranging events and applying for funding to improve the facilities. The next Friends ofHaigh Hall event is on 25th August in the courtyard. See the What’s On guide for more info.If you would like to find out more about Friends of Haigh Country Park, or how to have astall email Edna Hulme [email protected].

Teaching water confidence and safety techniques from birth, the specialist Water Babies programme is designed to make themost of babies’ natural affinity with water. With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto theirbacks or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearestsolid object. And it’s so important that they do. Within the last threeyears, ten of our children saved themselves from drowning –despite five of them being only two.

Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providinga complete physical workout which in turn aids the development ofthe brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awarenessand improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus!

With a clear emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally verysociable occasions – and excellent for strengthening the bondbetween the two of you.

And as the weeks go by, you’ll love the thrill of seeing your childrenprogress with the help of our professional instructors.

Alison has been running Water Babies across Wigan andsurrounding areas since 2005 and now teaches over 1500 babiesand toddlers across the region. For more information call Alison orher team on 01925 243643 or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk.

A great day out - whatever the weather!

The Ribble Steam Railway is based on the docks in Preston. Visitors can travel behind one of our restored steam engines in old-fashioned carriages, enjoying a three-mile return trip around the dock and along the riverbank, taking in views that can only be seen from the railway.

There’s much more than just a train ride to enjoy; we have an extensive museum that houses a variety of industrial locomotives - some of which we invite you to get ‘hands on’ with - and a series of displays about the history of Preston Docks, its railways and its operation.

When you’ve visited the museum, why not relax with a snack and drink in our tea room and then have a look in our workshop, where you can see the work in progress on the many projects under way?

The railway is open every weekend and Bank Holiday from May to October, and also at Easter and on Sundays in April. In the winter, we have Santa Special trains running on weekends in December. We also have a number of special events throughout the year - call our Talking Timetable for more information.
