Structure We use the verb to be (I was, you were, he/she/it was, we

were, they were). To make a question, we exchange the subject and verb. Look at these examples:

Subject Main verb

Affirmative form I, he/she/it was here.

You, we, they were in London.

 Interrogative form Was I, he/she/it right?

Were you, we, they late?

Common ways to ask the time• What time is it?

• Do you have the time?

• Have you got the time?

• Do you know what time it is?

These are all ways of asking someone what time it is.

What time is it? How would you answer?

For example:

• It is One O'clock.(1:00)

• It is two O'five OR it is five past two. (2:05)

It is twelve thirty five or thirty five past 12 ...after 12:30 (or any time later than half-past) we say...it is 25 to 1. (12:35)

• It is three fifteen or a quarter past 3. (3:15)

• It is five fifty or ten to 6. (5:50)

• It is ten thirty or half past ten. (10:30)

Notice: don’t mention “minutes”

What time is it?

Example: Excuse me. What time is it please?

• It's exactly eight o'clock.

or• It's eight.

Look and read the text with times.

Yesterday was Saturday and nice weather. Jane, Zaya and Dan were on a city excursion. At 10:00 in the morning they were all on the bus. By 11:00 Jane and Zaya were in the museum. At 13:00 they were all in a cafe, having lunch. At 14:00 they were at Sukhbaatar Square, ready to visit other places. Zaya and Dan were in the park at 15:00. Jane and Anand were at the cinema. By 17:00 they were all at home again. It was a good day.
