Beth was doing some rearranging and merchandising a few weeks ago and came across this beautiful sampler reproduction from Linda/Chessie & Me, and exclaimed that we should have this as Sampler of the Month. Well, I knew that it had been a special Stitch-Along at Country Sampler several years ago, and that it has been in the marketplace for a while. Many of us fell in love with it when Linda visited us in April of 2017 and joined us at our Sampler Sunday, along with her in-progress ESTHER EDDISON.

From Chessie & Me

The lower two-thirds of Esther’s sampler is populated with bird-filled trees, potted plants, and shrubs. In the center are Adam and Eve flanking the Tree of Life, complete with the serpent. Adam has not yet taken Eve’s Apple, but we know how that ends. More puzzling is the extremely rare feature of the Tree of Life with stumpwork apples and a serpent stitched in a high-relief chain stitch, both characteristic of stumpwork done in the 17th and 18th Centuries, here present in Esther Iddison’s 1832 needlework. Were it not for a sampler signed by her sister Sarah, giving her home as “Dishforth” in Yorkshire, England, this sampler could easily be thought to be American. Esther was born in Dishforth in 1816 to Thomas and Esther Iddison, one of three children.

But somehow I missed some of the very unique feature of this sampler. Here’s what Linda tells us about this sampler: Vivid and unusual, this early 19th Century crewel and cross-stitched sampler is stitched in wool on linen. Within the acorn and block borders Esther has sewn a large two-bay, three-chimney, ivy-covered home with a dated outbuilding topped by a watchful raven. A girl stands next to the house ~ possibly Esther herself ~ and watches as a figure passes led by a dog on a leash. Beneath is possibly the most unique feature … a caption, “Poor blind man.” This is the only example of an editorial comment I’ve ever seen in a sampler.

Attic Events Schedule (continued)

Nicola will only be teaching Bathya on one visit to the US, at The Attic and at Sassy Jacks Stitchery, in 2019. This will be the only opportunity you have to learn from Nicola how she stitched this sampler to achieve a truly reversible finish.

Bathya is a very special sampler with an amazing history - please see this video where Witney Antiques talks about the sampler shortly into the film. Bathya is also featured in many reference books.

Bathya stitched her sampler with 15 vibrant shades of silks, ingeniously devising stitch patterns and motifs. There is so much to delight in her sampler. She used a wide repertoire of stitches of varying intricacy. The stitches include two different versions of reversible cross stitch ~ one forms a cross on the reverse with a vertical stitch on the left and the other a four-sided stitch on the reverse. She also used double back stitch and diagonal double back stitch. These stitches appear plaited from the front and as two parallel rows of back stitch on the reverse ~ you might know them as closed herringbone. Other stitches used were double-sided Italian stitch; alternating double back stitch in groups of three, which represents the Trinity; detached buttonhole; french knots and satin stitch. Bathya’s whitework bands are particularly elegant. Narrow whitework bands were an important part of a stitcher’s repertoire, they were used on collar bands both as an adornment and as stiffening so that the collars would stand proud. It is important to us that we have smaller groups so that everyone has unrushed time to spend with Nicola, so class sizes will be limited.

You will learn the techniques needed to re-create this stunning sampler. Stitch count, 140 x 490.

SARAH STEWART HARDMAN 1824 $25, 236 x 254.

Message from Robert, our SAL leader: July progress on Sarah Stewart Hardman 1824 from NeedleWorkPress - Attic Needlework SAL 2018

The goal for July and August on The Attic SAL was to complete the house and lawn on the bottom left hand side of the sampler. Here is a picture of that section. I am a little bit ahead of the plan because I wanted to get the people started so that I could answer any questions that might arise as we start working on them in September.

According to Vickie there will be a recommendation for a replacement for the people by September (there are some of you that do not like the look of people on samplers so we want to provide you an option!)

I will post a full photo of my progress on this sampler around the middle of August.

This sampler is still a lot of fun. I do like seeing the parts come to life as I complete each section.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of everyone else's progress.

Happy Stitching!

(Excerpt from the chart) Hands Across the Sea Samplers are proud to present to you a beautiful reversible band sampler from the private collection of Nicola Parkman. The sampler was a gift from Nicola’s husband who knows his wife well and that antique needlework, and in particular band samplers, are his “girl’s best friend”! The 1600’s is regarded as the golden age of band sampler making, and the sampler that MH finished nearly 400 years ago on May 23rd, 1656 is one of those very special pieces. She is a beautiful example of reverse stitching. Nicola has spent innumerable hours studying, under high magnification, every single stitch in this sampler. It has been fascinating to follow the path that MH’s needle took. This is a sampler which takes the needleworker on a journey – almost a musical journey with each of the bands having its own characteristics yet contributing to the piece as a whole. It almost seems as if MH was the conductor of an orchestra, bringing in her threads and colors at precisely the right time. She has demonstrated a mastery of melody, structure and orchestration, a command of tone, color and harmony. The first few bands start off with simple stitches – a gentle meandering theme, in a slow tempo, played quite softly but with occasional louder parts to keep our interest. As in music, she takes a theme, repeats it and then starts to develop it in different ways. She ingeniously uses different colors – some lighter, some brighter, changes directions of the threads and uses different stitches. She varies the texture in some areas. Towards the middle of the sampler, it is almost as if there is a change of theme, with the colors becoming bolder – the musical journey is developing and gathering pace. You feel as if you are being led somewhere with the introduction of a beautiful blue downward path in the middle of the sampler. You can feel the intensity rising almost as if you are reaching a crescendo. This path leads to a much louder part – almost the centerpiece of the sampler, where it seems all the orchestra is playing and taking you to new heights. MH finally leaves us with a return to a softer, more muted area to conclude her sampler. Her skill with a needle is certainly to be admired!

Many of you who were with us in January when Nicola Parkman was here were fortunate to see this incredible museum-quality 17th Century band sampler in person. I know you will agree with me that it took one’s breath away. I’ve never personally seen a sampler like this except in a museum, under glass. And now, thanks to Nicola’s incredible reproduction, we can create our own!

For the Beautiful MH 1656 SAMPLER

This beautiful conversion was done by Access Commodities, our distributor for the very fine Au Ver A’Soie French embroidery silks. The sampler is charted for AVAS, the skeins, but for the higher-count linens some may prefer the Soie 100/3, which are the spools. As I mentioned previously, for those using Soie 100/3, you may also want the AVAS for the satin-stitch areas.

Below, the AVAS skeins on the 40-count hand-dyed linen we chose for this sampler.

We still have Darlene O’Steen’s book on DVD, $36

These are now in stock. See more about this book on page 33.

*** AN ANNOUNCEMENT *** I will be leading a Stitch-a-Long for the beautiful band sampler MH 1656 - My Beloved’s Gift. The SAL will start in November and I will be posting a band a month. Whilst this will not be a workshop as such, I will be sharing tips and tricks along the way and helping those stitching with me. For more information about the sampler please visit her webpage

I will not be setting up a separate Facebook Page but will post each month in Our Samplers Years and the HATS Facebook page and the HATS blog on our website.

Gary Parr of Fiber Talk visited The Attic several weeks ago specifically to view this exquisite sampler in person, and while he was there, he did a video highlighting the many features of this amazing piece of needlework. Watch the video here and you will be treated to an up-close view of Sarah’s sampler.

Above, the beautiful Gloriana silks in our conversion.

The Attic is privileged to have on display the stunning model of Sarah’s sampler, beautifully embroidered by Jacqueline Morris.

I hope you will be able to visit The Attic while this exquisite sampler is on display, probably until next year.

FABRIC UPDATE We have not received our special-cut hand-dyed linen yet, BUT we have in stock in both 40-count and 36-count a lovely Zweigart linen. For 40-count, a Stitcher’s Half ($38) will provide 2-inch margins on the height and 3+-inch margins in the width. We also have a few pieces in 36-count ~ the size of the sampler will require the whole yard ($66).

TO WRITE WITHOUT PAPER, INK OR QUILL: A Look at Sampler Verses Samplers satisfyingly drag us down so many intriguing rabbit holes—motifs, alphabets, provenance, materials, style, verses. It’s the latter that captivates the literary curiosity of Vickie LoPiccolo Jennet. She’s looking forward to taking us on a condensed but illuminating journey through the history of sampler verses.  As part of your class, you will also receive the chart to Carolyn Alder Aged 7, a charming 1827 sampler with an equally charming verse: “Industry taught in early days not only yields the teacher praise, but gives us pleasure when we view the works that innocence can do.” Vickie and daughter-in-law Maegan Jennett merge their talents and passion so that NeedleWorkPress can do its part to foster an appreciation for historic stitching and related items. They’re proud to be part of The Attic’s 2019 Sampler Symposium program.

Caroline Alder 1827 I’m so excited that NeedleWorkPress made available to us for our Symposium this most charming sampler. Little Caroline was such an ambitious needleworker at the tender age of 7 … she stitched her entire sampler over one except for the top band and the dog and the bird. It has something for everyone!

Tsubaki Here’s what Jackie tells us about this remarkable project. PRONOUNCED: TSOO-BA-KYEE  Tsubaki is the Japanese word for the camellia flower. Tsubaki can also mean the emotions longing or waiting, and for especially the red camellia flower it can be represented as love. In western terms the name Tsubaki means excellence.

Symbolism of the Camellia Flower The camellia flower has enjoyed a rich history, including its reported inclusion in the secret gardens of Chinese Emperors.

• China  – The camellia flower is highly regarded in China and is even considered the national flower of southern China.  The camellia flower symbolizes young sons and daughters.

• Japan – In Japan the camellia flower is called “Tsubaki” and symbolizes the divine. It is often used in religious and sacred ceremonies. It also represents the coming of spring.

• Korea – In Korea the camellia flower is a symbol of faithfulness and longevity. They have been part of traditional Korean wedding ceremonies since 1200 B.C.

• Victorian England – In Victorian England the camellia bloom sent the secret message that the recipient was adorable.

• United States – The camellia flower is the state flower for Alabama and typically represents Southern beauty.

Tsubaki was created to celebrate my son and our family.  The connecting vine that is worked on all four sides of the Tsubaki carrier represents our lives together, each individual but forever connected.  The side panels also flow from panel to panel to complement the tiny cherry tray hand crafted by Mr. Miller from Miller's Carpentry Creations.  Notice how the wood grain of  Mr. Miller's cherry tray panels match perfectly.

“Elizabeth Charlotte Cotton finished in the eleventh year of her age 1753”

Reproduced by Nicola Parkman of Hands Across the Sea Samplers from a sampler in her private collection on behalf of Mrs. Jean Lea as an Attic Needlework exclusive.

Elizabeth, who we believe was known as Charlotte, diligently plied her needle laying reversible cross stitches, cross stitches over 1 thread, satin stitches, Montenegrin stitches, double back stitches and Algerian eyelets.

Stitched from a palette of 15 jewel like colours including garnet, rose, terracotta, peach, gray greens, soft golds, yellows and celadon green, the sampler has a stitch count of 353 x 303.

Charlotte was baptised on November 14th 1742 in Southwark, London. She died aged 59 on December 13th 1801. She had 8 children of which only 4 survived to adulthood. Thomas, the third son to have carried that name, was a renowned topographer of West London.

Nicola will also present a 30-minute lecture about band samplers and why they transitioned into samplers with borders.

“Ode to Jane” Optional Friday Class 9 - 4 PM . . .

. . . with Jackie du Plessis/It’s Fine-ally Finished

Ode to Jane ~ Here’s what Jackie says about how this pièce de résistance came to be: Many years ago I found this wonderful antique lace display desk - it was large - much too large for a lap desk.  I needed to scale it down - so I contacted Mr Miller from Miller Carpentry Creations and asked him to take a look at the piece.  He also was intrigued by the mechanics and shape of the piece.  He asked me what size I would roughly need and I said abut 7 x 8 and cherry, please.  Time passed and one day a superbly mini version arrived at my home.  I could not wait to start working and creating times that would showcase this beautiful handcrafted desk. When thinking/dreaming of stitches and how bands of stitches flow into samplers, Jane Austen's use of words that weave into brilliant tapestry of stories come to mind.  I was inspired to create my own tapestry of silken stitches as the desk's bottom Stitches that inspire, capture our essence of needle artists.

So what’s inside this beautiful box hand-crafted by Mr. Miller o f M i l l e r C a r p e n t r y Creations?

Let's open it and see!

Message bag thread pouch - I wanted to create a special holder for finishing thread that mimic's the message carrier of yesteryear.

The collection of items created to fill the Ode desk consists of:

* Desk bottom, desk's panel that features a Jane Austen quote with pull opener tab.

* Sewing case - desk fits neatly b e t w e e n t h e t w o s i d e functional ends  when desk is placed on top of sewing case.

* Messenger bag thread pouch * Button Pouch * Pin Keep case * Bottle/trinket holder

Bottle/trinket holder holds three storage bottles. The top and bottom of these two panels that are pulled at the sides to snugly hold the bottles in place are cupped with a Hedebo scallop edge.

Pin Keep case - inspired by from a watered-silk antique from my collection of smalls.

Button Pouch - Wanting to capture nature and all the beauty it brings, I stitched a base of green leaves, each of these leave edges are cupped with tiny Hedebo scallop stitches creating a scallop leaf effect. From these leaves pretty flower buds sprout as if they hold a promise of things to come....I adore buttons and am always on the hunt for more so I needed a special pouch for these tiny treasures. The back of the button-bag features a stitched butterfly.

The sewing case has two functional ends - the storage case interior features an alphabet paying homage to Jane, her masterful weaving of these letters into timeless stories. The two functional ends consist of a pocket for trinkets, and the second is a padded mattress pincushion that lifts to reveal a needle storage section. Two thread-holding Hedebo rings embellish the

thread storage bag.  This circle pattern was

inspired by regency period wallpaper.

Desk bottom - Regency period wallpaper inspired the circle-shaped border. I added the hand-dyed medley colored flowers to add a bit of nature's beauty. Various bands and motives of nature stitched to mimic a tapestry for the desk base.

. . . with Jackie du Plessis/It’s Fine-ally Finished

Here’s what Jackie tells us about this project:

These treasured black walnut carriers that measure 4" x 3 1/2" have been patiently waiting for the perfect project.  I think I have been saving them for more than 10 years...been so long, I can’t remember.  The carriers are very special. The following is from Beth Dixon of Orleans Carpentry about these carriers:

Paul and I are both remembering those were 35th Anniversary pieces. Black Walnut is the wood. Paul turned each of the tiny walnut handle spacers on his old machinist’s lathe. He bought the walnut used for those in 1978 when he was making his double treadle spinning wheels. A lot of the wood came out of Michigan. I believe you bought the entirety of the 4-finger black walnut little swing handle boxes. As far as we know, the Shakers never made tiny swing handle boxes like those - we made them with a love of the wood and the process of bending boxes. Little treasures. I'm sure whatever you design will be spectacular and we are honored you will be using boxes we made for your project."

The Fit for a Queen class with carrier is a limited one-time offering to 44

Jackie continues: While teaching  in  San Fransisco in  the summer of 2017, I was treated to photos from Helen Keaton, showing me her recent  purchase from Portobello Road,London.  My fingers started to itch and, long story short...Helen graciously offered the needleroll to be shared with all of us.  Thus the perfect project for these treasured black walnut carriers. Kit will include all supplies to complete the Fit for a Queen with walnut carrier - using a variety of silk fibers, ribbon from Japan, 40-count fine linen to complement the scale and size of the antique, and silk taffeta carrier lining.

I am delighted and honored to offer Fit for a Queen with walnut carrier  at the January 2019 Sampler Symposium. My goal is to enable the students to complete the needleroll, complete the entire project.  I  know there are many of us that love Queen-stitch passionately, but to stitch an entire outer body panel and then an interior body panel with four attached pockets could be an overwhelming and daunting task.  The twist....I shall offer the class project needleroll with the latice motifs in Queen-stitch in the wonderful color hues inspired by the antique needleroll, omitting  only the Queens-stitch backgrounds.  This will allow the linen to create a backdrop that blends and complements the silk-colored textured Queen-stitch lattice motifs.

For those students that would like to stitch an entire Queen-stitch roll, the needed background silk fiber will be offered as an optional $50 kit. I shall also discuss alternative stitches that could be worked to mimic the Queen-stitch.

Books, Books & More Books!

. . . Beth’s Magical Finishes

Early-Style Hardanger $30 ~ Early-style Hardanger is not often seen outside of Norway, but is quite distinct from contemporary Hardanger. This historical style of embroidery has traditionally been used on the women's clothing in the Hardangerfjord region, and was designed to imitate needle-made lace of the 1600's and 1700's. Yvette provides 10 varied projects with a range of contemporary applications, including a blouse with embroidered cuffs and collar, soft furnishings for the home, table linen, and small articles suitable to give as gifts. The left- and right- handed step-by-step stitch and technique instructions are easy to follow.

The other books on this page and the next have been in the shop, and on my desk to include in a newsletter, for several months now, but somehow it didn’t happen. These are all from needlework author Yvette Stanton, who particularly loves historical whitework and exploring stitches, and for that we are the beneficiaries. I love needlework books of all kinds, and find especially useful those with clear instructions, understandable diagrams, and beautiful projects incorporating the techniques presented. And that describes each of Yvette’s books, wonderful additions to your needlework library … must-haves!

It’s here! … and if you haven’t already ordered this, please don’t delay … due to popular demand, it has been reprinted but may not be again, and this is a book that you don’t want to be without. The Montenegrin Stitch was commonly used on 17th and 18th century samplers. Its texture and dimension add so much to a sampler, and this comprehensive and usable (in its coil-bound format) notebook will be at your right hand when reproducing your favorite historical samplers.

Mountmellick Embroidery $30 is highly textured floral whitework embroidery that was first developed around 1825. While it is sometimes referred to as Montmellick, Mt Mellick, Mountmellic, or even Montmellic, Mountmellick is the correct spelling as it is taken from the name of the town Mountmellick in County Laois (pronounced leash) in Ireland. It employs highly textured stitching to depict the plants and flowers that grew around the town. It uses white thread on white fabic, and has a characteristic knitted fringe that edges the work. This fully revised and expanded, full color, step-by-step guide with over 600 clear diagrams and photos, will lead you from beginner to advanced Mountmellick stitcher.

Sandy Calcote, Attic customer, finisher extraordinaire, and remarkable teacher, once again led a finishing workshop, this time for “O Tannenbaum” from Brenda Gervais/With Thy Needle & Thread ~ it was an all-day affair, with a break for lunch, but Sandy had it timed perfectly so that everyone had completed all of the steps and could go home and finish the rest on their own. Turn to the next page to see some of the amazing finishes! (The beautiful stands were a handcrafted gift for all attendees from Sandy’s husband, Lynn.)

Lunch …(dessert came later … ice cream & cookies!)

Marcy was the teacher’s assistant, and she excelled at that for sure!

I’d intended to be a student in this workshop when it was planned many months ago, but that was not to be. So several from the "O Tannenbaum Stitch Group" volunteered to stitch the various design parts a second time, and Sandy did the finishing ... and they surprised me with the gift of a completed box of my own. Well, I was in tears ... with a very grateful heart to have such generous, kind, and thoughtful customers ...

Epilogue

Dear Friends, I’m energized because I can now see the light at the end of the chemo tunnel. I only have two more of the long infusions, the 5-hour ones, the difficult ones, and with God’s grace I can do this! Besides, I cannot let you down, so many of you that have been supportive beyond words with your gifts, cards, notes, texts, and hugs! You brighten my days and teach me how to be a more caring, loving, and thoughtful friend. With heartfelt gratitude, Jean

August 1, 1970 … “…to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health …” I have no idea how I could have endured this journey without John by my side … I didn’t comprehend the depth of the commitment suggested by some of those vows. All I know is I am so blessed to share my life with this gentle man whose wonderful sense of humor has kept me smiling.

Hannah’s boyfriend was out of town, and I was having a really good day, so we went to lunch! And Hannah was sad that she wasn’t going to see her Grandpa, who was teaching a workshop at his woodturners’ group. So we surprised him there! It was such a fun Saturday afternoon!
