Mary Mccallester 1824 from NeedleWorkPress

Because of my difficult schedule for the next two months through our moving the shop, we’re announcing our April & May Co-Samplers of the Month early, because now I won’t have to focus on the next one until June! We’re so fortunate to have the model of this incredible sampler in the shop so I could take close-ups! As a Sampler of the Month, you may save 15% on the purchase of two of the following through May: * chart $28 * Lakeside Linen (on 40c w/2-inch margins, $32) * silk threadpack as set forth in the chart, combining both NPI silks & Belle Soie, $89 ~ don’t you just love the effect the overdyed silk gives in the expansive lawn area?!

Mary Mccallester 1824

Brought to you by NeedleWorkPress

Love the ship and the rice-stitch section and especially the acorn border!

Vickie of NeedleWorkPress loves cows! And isn’t that just the best cow you’ve ever seen?!

The chart from NeedleWorkPress includes a bit of information about the original samplermaker and historical information about the area where she lived.

Charted for hand-dyed cottons, of course we did a silk conversion ~ price next time! I left it at the shop and I’m at home about to pack for Nashville!

Seeing the original antique of this Sampler from Saxony, “ATS 1871” from Gigi R Collection Privée, was one of the highlights of my Nashville trip. Gigi brought it in her suitcase! It has a stitch count of 237w x 670h ~ we’ve ordered special cuts of linen for it, a beautiful vintage color from Lakeside Linens, and it will be available in special cut lengths to accommodate the length (33.5” on 40c, 37.2” on 36c). We’ve also ordered it in 45c, but I haven’t determined that price as of now.

Because I know my schedule will be difficult for the next two months with the moving of the shop, I’ve already named this a Co-Sampler of the Month for April & May, along with another beautiful sampler that I will show you next time, and will honor the SOM discount now through May.Save 15% on your purchase of two of the following: * chart $24* special cut of 40c or 36c Lakeside

Linen $44* overdyed silks $230.50 OR, if you

must, the overdyed cottons $112.20

First, the rules: All sale items are limited to stock on hand. No-discount items (typically some hard-cover books and a very few other things that I can’t think of right now) and The Examplarery kits are exempt from the sale discounts, as are any charts and/or kits received in The Attic in 2013 (determined by our price coding). Sale discounts also are not applicable on any special-order merchandise or subscriptions; and immediate check-out/shipment is required, that is, no “Holds” on sale merchandise. So without further ado, here are the sale particulars:

Saturday, April 6 ~ Friday, April 12

20% Off Charts/KitsAdditional 5% Off Autumn/Christmas

Thank you in advance for anything you will do to help “lighten the load.” It’s a great time to SCALP (Stash Collect at LOW Prices) ~ there’s lots of very desirable needlework stuff that becomes even more attractive and irresistible when it’s a bargain! We all love a bargain! If you’re an ‘away’ customer, a great tool to use to shop our shop is to peruse the years of eNewsletters that are posted to our Website. While we don’t have an online cart, our “catalogue supplements” I think will serve you well for this process. Make your lists, email them to us, and we’ll pull the merchandise we have in stock and phone or email you back with your total! Call/email with any questions.

Congratulations, Maegan . . .

. . . and Patrick, on your forthcoming BJ (Baby Jennett)! We know you’re thrilled to become parents, and we are so very excited for the two of you ~ and will be pleased to show photos of the new family very soon! In the meantime, Maegan has begun an indefinite maternity leave from The Attic ~ the joy she has brought to our shop was palpable by all of us, including all of you, our dear customers, who got to know her. After we’re in the new shop and the baby is here, we will be hosting a baby shower for the new Jennett! Watch for photos of the new family soon!

Linda Barry’s exquisite Elizabethan Treasures . . .

. . . is NOT out of print, as I’d mistakenly thought for a number of years, and I’m thrilled to have it in the shop and available for you ($24). AND the best news: Designer Linda Barry winters in Williamsburg, AZ, only an hour and a half from the shop, and she has agreed to be with us on Saturday afternoon, April 13, from 1:30 - 3:30 for a Meet ‘n Greet. Please join us and meet Linda and enjoy some refreshments! No fee, but please register for my planning purposes.

The Samplar Workes . . .

. . . the incredible collection of the works of designer Page Dorsey, will not be available much longer because Page is retiring as of May 1. Some recent health challenges have given Page time for reflection, resulting in her decision to retire from our industry. It is so very difficult not to be sad over the retirement of some of our most favorite designers, but we will push aside our selfishness and wish you well, Page, in your ‘new life.’ We show you here and on the following pages just some of this remarkable collection of designs. To see them all, go to her Website here. Some designs are very limited, so don’t wait and be disappointed! We have a number of shop models by Page, and we have tucked those in as well on the following pages.

More from The Samplar Workes

Above: “Petite Mexican Sampler - An Adaptation” $12 (stitches used are Cross Stitch, Four-Sided Stitch, and Satin Stitch), one of the most popular models in our shop, and one of my all-time favorites to stitch, because it’s small & sweet and uses Au Ver A’Soie’s beautiful Soie d’Paris on 45/48c linen (calls for 48c, but Pat of Lakeside Linens told me that 45c is MUCH easier than 48c & I’ve never again stitched on 48c). If you prefer a larger-count linen, like 40c, Au Ver A’Soie’s Soie d’Alger will work perfectly! PLUS I love the frame Sandy chose ~ doesn’t it look like it originated in Old Mexico?!

Above, “True Virtue” $14, the design for which won First Place in the ‘Sampler’ category and ‘Best of Show for Needlework’ in the Southern Maryland Quilt & Needlework Show! Stunning design using Au Ver a’Soie’s Soie d’Alger and Trebizond silk for the cross stitch, cross over one, Queen stitch, Algerian eye, satin, stem, and straight stitches.

Right, “Victorian Berlin-Work Sampler - an Adaptation” $38 uses Au Ver a’Soie’s Soie d’Alger for the cross stitch, tent stitch, and 20 satin-stitch or Florentine stitch patterns.

Above, “The Wisdom Sampler” $12 is charted for Au Ver A’Soie’s beautiful Soie d’Paris on 45c linen but beautiful as well on 40c with Soie d’Alger.

Reproductions from The Samplar Workes

Clockwise from above left: “Jemima Smith c.1821 - an English Reproduction” $16 is also worked in Au Ver A’Soie silks! Beautiful! ~ “Christinia Cathcart” is also a shop model, a very favorite for years ~ “Rebecca Cason c. 1746” $12, another shop model, in the cartouche area has the name “Mary Carter” and, while Page doesn’t have genealogy information about Rebecca, she suggests that Mary Carter may have been Rebecca’s teacher/governess ~ below, a closeup of the cartouche area showing the eyelet stitches (that I would probably replace with rice stitch, a stitch I like much more!) ~ and “Jane Habgood Coppard c. 1812 - an English Sampler Reproduction” $14 uses another exquisite Au Ver A’Soie silk, Soie 100/3! Another reason I will miss Page’s designs: She almost always used beautiful Au Ver A’Soie silk products and lovely Lakeside linens.

SOLD OUT ~ so sorry!

Above are most of the silks we used . . .

. . . in our hand-dyed silk conversion for “The Red Deer Sampler” $22 from Gigi R ~ and we couldn’t help but show them to you again on a lovely Lakeside linen that we kitted up for Sandra in lieu of the hand-dyed linen that has been on back order for too long! Below, Inguna’s progress on her sampler. All very beautiful ~ and will be even more so when the red deer is there!

A Word About Linen and How We Cut ItUnless you specifically request it, we do not cut the length of the piece with the selvage running lengthwise. In our experience in working with the linen fabrics of today, there isn’t a perceivable difference. The warp and the weft threads in today’s linen are so similar that it doesn’t cause a problem. We’ve cut linens for several decades, and Sandy has framed hundreds of linens, and in no circumstance have we found it to be an issue. I did a bit of research with people I consider fabric experts, and someone suggested that in years past, many years ago, the weft threads were not as strong because the weft does not have to be stretched on a loom in the way that the warp is, but I am told that that is no longer true today. I also refer you to a page entitled “FAQs About Counted Thread Embroidery” on Scarlet Letter’s Website here, where it says the following: How should the linen be cut: with the selvages on the right and left? The question has been most succinctly and best answered by Ginnie Thompson in Second Steps in Counted Cross Stitch: Special Techniques for Linen: "The best Danish linen, often in kits, is truly evenweave and may be worked with selvages at top and bottom." The linen used in all Scarlet Letter kits is the finest Danish evenweave available on today's market. Selvages can be top, bottom, right or left, it makes no difference, because this fine linen is truly evenweave. And that truly is our experience with the linen we stock as well: It is fine linen and there is no perceivable difference between the warp and the weft threads.

Ann Bowers SamplerJoanne provides the following information in the kit: “Ann Bowers was born in Newport on June 18th, 1734. She was the daughter of Jonathan Bowers, a builder of boats, and Mary Boss. We know that the family were members of the Quaker Society of Friends in Newport. Perhaps due to the economic devastation experienced in Newport during the American Revolution and the death of her father, Ann and her mother moved to Swansey, Massachusetts in 1780. We have no further genealogical information to glean on the remainder of Ann’s life.” Stitches used in this piece are cross stitch over two threads, cross stitch over one thread, back stitch, satin stitch, Algerian eye, and queen stitch. On 35c linen, sampler size is 9 3/4 x 21 1/2; on 40c linen, 8 1/2 x 18 3/4. The kit is available on 35c linen with DMC ($80) or 35c or 40c linen with silk ($150). I’m stitching mine with silk on 40c. It’s not too late to join us on this Stitch-Along journey to reproduce Ann Bowers’ beautiful sampler. Let us know which linen and thread you would like and we’ll order your kit so that you can begin! We have several 35c w/DMC kits on hand if you are interested in that.

“Ann Bowers” Our 2013 Attic Stitch-Along

Suggested March & April Stitching: Work the alphabet band and the exquisite floral band, the dividing bands that separate them, as well as that portion of the outside borders. (I see that I haven’t quite finished that!) The floral band is quite a bit of stitching but, oh, so pleasurable! It is a pure joy to stitch; the colors are wonderful! Because my personal schedule for the next 60 days is going to be very crazy busy with moving the shop, I’ve given two months’ of suggested stitching. As I have it mapped out, we will complete this sampler in November, just in time to have it framed and ready to hang for your Holiday decorating.

And where is your progress photo?

Several of you who are stitching with DMC have asked about a fix for your ‘ecru’ color so closely matching the linen. Some people like the tone-on-tone look, but if that’s not working for you, select a DMC shade that is a bit darker than the linen so that it shows up to your liking.

Gigi R’s “Elizabeth Read Sampler 1738”

Here’s what the chart says about this sampler: This is an adapted reproduction of English sampler stitched by Elizabeth Read in 1738. She was 11 years old at the time. Elizabeth’s sampler is band-shaped ... shows motifs with religious symbolism, such as Adam and Eve and Spies of Canaan, as well as a crowned lion, numerous birds, deer, dogs, flowerpots, fruit baskets. She also stitched verse 8 and 9 from Proverbs Chapter XXX. In the bottom part of her sampler Elizabeth worked her name, age and year. Stitches used in the original sampler where cross stitch over two and one thread, satin, Algerian eye and chain stitch. In our adaptation all specialty stitches are replaced by cross stitches. ... Elizabeth’s name, age and year were worked in counted satin. The word ‘care’ in Proverbs is stitched with crosses over one thread of linen. In some places stitches on original were missing and it was not possible to restore a pattern. Colors were selected from the front side of the original. Gigi says, I love the grape carriers (Joshua and Caleb) dressed like ready to dance a Russian ballet.

L e f t , o u r ove r d ye d s i l k convers ion ($115.25) for “Elizabeth Read” $24, a wonder fu l Adam & Eve sampler from Gigi R that also includes many other motifs & religious symbols AND a pious verse from Proverbs 30:8: Remove far from me vanity and lies give me neither poverty nor riches feed me with food convenient for me Lest I be full and deny thee and say who is the Lord or lest I be poor and steal and take the name of my God in vain. * ___ My Dear Do all With care (a word is missing)

Below, Inguna’s beautiful progress. I LOVE the blue shades! And the satin-stitched letters will be especially lovely with the glorious sheen of silk floss!
