Case study: harbor Club Condominium Case study: grocery store

After this customer recently experienced a messy and costly repipe, it looked for non-destructive options to rehabilitate its tenant’s failing drain lines and carefully chose Nu Flow. Our flexible scheduling permitted technicians to line pipes while this grocery store was closed at night. Nu Flow’s unique, in-place structural liner was installed without causing any damage to the building, landscape or hardscape.

Project: Use Nu Drain to rehabilitate a failing grease drain line in a busy supermarket.

Customer: B&B Corporate Holdings owns and manages 20 Handy Food Stores, all of which are located in Florida, as well as manages approximately one million square feet of retail shopping space.

Site: A major grocery store that has been at its Tampa, Florida, location since 2006. The building was built in 1958.

System: Cast iron grease drain lines with diameters of 3" and 4". These pipes are more than 50 years old and are located beneath the slab and tile floors near the grocery store’s deli.

Problem: Upon inspection of the grease drain line, the bottom of the pipe line had eroded. These pipes are in use 15 hours every day so the customer needed the pipes to be rehabilitated without any disruption to normal operations.

Circumvention: The customer had a recent experience with a repipe for another tenant’s failing pipe line in another building and opted to find a non-destructive rehabilitation solution instead. But if the customer had chosen a traditional repipe to replace the eroded drain line, this grocery store would have had to close for several weeks while the pipes were dug out of the ground, replaced and then the surrounding area rebuilt. It would have been a monstrous project with a lot of costs for construction and business closure that the customer did not want its tenant to endure.

Solution: Skilled Nu Flow drain technicians worked at night while the supermarket was closed to ensure uninterrupted business operations. The Nu Drain system was installed using our Pull-in-Place structural liner. This epoxy-drenched liner was pulled into place using existing access points, which prevented the need for any destruction. Once the liner cured, a protective and seamless pipe-within-a-pipe was left in the host pipe system. This epoxy liner covers all breaches in pipe and will prevent erosion in the future.

Nu Flow’s innovative and non-destructive pipe lining technologies make pipe system rehabilitation easy on the customer. These unique and patented processes preserve our customers’ properties, as well as save them money, hassle and time.

“Nu Flow’s crew worked overnight while the store was closed and

repaired the line section by section, allowing continued, uninterrupted

operations for our tenant during their normal operating hours.

They completed the work ahead of schedule and on budget, and saved us a tremendous headache and cost versus an open cut approach. I can recommend them highly and know this will not be the last project they

tackle for B&B.”

Nu Flow lined over 3.5 miles of potable pipes within twin residential skyscrapers in downtown San Diego, California. Our non-invasive epoxy coating system was applied in-place, which prevented destruction and water service disruption to these high-class homes.

Project: Use Nu Line to rehabilitate more than 3.5 miles of potable pipes throughout two 41-story residential buildings.

Customer: The HOA for the luxurious Harbor Club condominium towers. The residents in these prominent skyscrapers are high-status professionals, which include millionaires and professional athletes.

Site: Harbor Club Condominiums are twin, 41-story condominium towers in downtown San Diego, California. These elite buildings stand 424 feet tall each and were built in 1992. As the eighth tallest buildings in San Diego, the condo units have beautiful, scenic views of downtown, San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

System: More than 3.5 miles of hot and cold potable pipes in all floors in both buildings. These copper pipes have diameters from 1/2" to 5" and are hidden inside the ceilings and walls throughout the high-end finishes and fixtures.

Problem: The 20-year-old pipes experienced failures that are commonly seen in copper potable pipes. Expenses and inconvenience from the failures lead the HOA to research solutions.

Circumvention: If the HOA had chosen a repipe instead of Nu Flow’s non-invasive pipe lining solution, all of the potable pipes would have been removed, which would have resulted in major demolition to these high-scale, remodeled units. A lot of drywall, marble, custom finishes, fine woods, tile and mirrors would have been removed and then replaced. Repiping would have also taken at least twice as long to complete.

Solution: Nu Flow customized its usual potable lining procedure to ensure minimum disruption and overall satisfaction of the residents. The technicians provided all of the units with temporary water while their potable pipes were being cleaned and lined, preventing displacement of the residents. Technicians also overhauled all of the pipes in the residents’ showers, tubs and other plumbing fixtures that were in need of attention.

First, the potable system was thoroughly cleaned using an abrasive agent. Then, Nu Flow’s Nu Line epoxy coating was pushed through the pipes using clean, filtered and compressed air. The epoxy cured to form a smooth, protective barrier coating that will prevent pinhole leaks, corrosion and heavy metals leaching from the pipes. This innovative, non-invasive pipe lining method for potable pipe systems is unique to Nu Flow. Now the residents inside these luxurious twin towers can continue to enjoy their homes without fear of potable pipe system failures.

Licensee Corner: Millwood Plumbing, Inc.

With more than 20 years experience in the plumbing industry, Millwood Plumbing, Inc. of Cartersville, Georgia acquired Nu Flow’s Nu Drain lining technology and now offers an excellent alternative to conventional drain pipe replacement.

Project: Receive on-site training from a Nu Flow Trainer for Nu Drain, while lining multi-unit complexes for a military base in Georgia.

System: The first unit of 80 was successfully lined with the support of Nu Flow. A total of 133 feet of 2" to 4" in diameter pipe was lined using the Pull-in-Place process during the training.

Situation: The military base was remodeling and updating the entire complex, in doing so they chose to use Nu Drain by Nu Flow to create a structural liner inside the existing pipe.

Solution: Millwood Plumbing was able to get hands-on training by a Nu Flow Trainer while completing a job for their customer. As an alternative to conventional drain replacement, which is costly, disruptive and messy, Nu Drain was used to line the pipes in-place, without the need to remove the entire existing drain pipe.
