An enthusiastic crowd of Talk media professionals from all across the country turned out for this year’s event to learn and to share ideas with their peers. Among the most well- received speakers at TMC/TSBC 2011 was Tim’s Friday morning general session entitled “Leadership During Changing Times,” a subject near and dear to the hearts of all in the room as changes continued to rock the industry even as our conference took place. This week, we share just some of the comments and commentary delivered by Sanders about why he believes radio still has a bright future, and why we need to turn “bad news” into “get busy” news. “I think a lot about the opportunities that adversity presents to strong- minded people. When things are at the top of the market, everybody’s a genius. But when adversity sets in, the herd thins. The lucky lose their jobs and the excellent fill-in behind them.” “Over and over I have watched as industries that have faced radical change and disruptive innovation get caught flat-footed. And when disruptive innovation occurs, many say, ‘We can’t respond to that, that’s not the business that we’re in.’ But, as Napoleon said, ‘A leader’s role is to define reality, then give hope.’ “In times of uncertainty like these, our job as leaders is not to focus so much on the reality, but to find the middle ground and declare hope before hope makes sense on paper.” “If you Google the phrase, ‘hanging tough’ and ‘New Yorker,’ what you will find is a study about every recession since 1901. And what they found is that every great leap in every industry occurs during a recession. Whether it’s 1932 when embattled Kellogg decides to launch Rice Krispies, or 1934 when Kraft introduced Miracle Whip, or 1937 when the Chevrolet brand was first introduced, or October of 2002 when Steve Jobs launched the iPod, knowing that Sony would be too big and too freaked out to respond to the attack on their Walkman empire, which should have crushed the iPod. Or what Hyundai did in 2009 and 2010 when it bought up all of General Motors’ cancelled advertising and gained more market share in 12 months than any auto company in history had done. All examples of people and companies who found a way to pivot in their respective industries when the time to pivot was good.” “It’s time to stop selling spots and start selling solutions. When you are at the height of uncertainty, price rules. It’s an attack on rates and margins that increases consolidation, tears up the profit and loss statement, and causes people to lose their jobs. It goes on and on until some company, or companies, break out of the model and offer solutions. Solutions are what’s for sale today. If you look at historical trends in the past decade, about 70% of your life in this decade will be spent during the ‘recovery phase,’ when the only money on the table for advertising is for solving real business problems.” BROUGHT TO YOU BY LIVE WEEKDAYS 11AM–12PM/ET (REFEEDS AVAILABLE) FOR SYNDICATION, CALL 877.410.3283 WWW.ANDRESGUTIERREZ.COM WHERE LIFE HAPPENS CALLER AFTER CALLER… IN SPANISH. “Positive thinking is not an effective prescription that you can give to someone who is afraid, or down on their luck. It’s like telling an obese person to just think skinny. Positive thinking is an outcome of conscious lifestyle design and prudence. You think positive, because you live positive.”

“I’m not here to tell you to get over it, I’m here to tell you that you will need to find a way to turn what you call ‘bad news’ into ‘get off the couch and get busy news.’”

“Feed your mind good stuff. You have to stop putting poison into your head. It’s OK to glance at the negative, but focus on the positive. Start treating the bad news network at work like someone who sneezes on you. You are ticked off at that person and you should feel the same about the Chicken Little’s who come to work and tell everyone else about how the sky is falling and it’s only going to get worse. They are spreading a disease, just like that guy who sneezed on you. Fry Chicken Little. Don’t reward the fire starters and whiners in your organization.”

“Giving is critical. The mind is a success mechanism when you point it somewhere. When you give, you refocus the mind on what you have, not what you lack. When I face people in uncertain situations my prescription is always the same -- give your way out of fear. Especially if you can give to people who can never repay you. Helping the helpless helps you to understand the wealth you really have and the capabilities you are still left with. Giving is a wonder drug. There is no malady or physical ailment that can survive the impact of generosity. Whether you are mentoring someone at work, or helping a customer find a new business opportunity, giving triggers a reward center in your brain.”

“There are three invisible things that you can give people. Things that as you give them away, they grow. Stanley Marcus Jr. taught me the importance of one of those things -- mentoring. That’s where you find people who are in transition that need what you have and you give it to them. When you mentor, you empower people. Whether they’re your customers, your co-workers, or your employees, or friends -- you will never get dumber by making someone else in this world smarter. This is the time for you to mentor with those who have even more uncertainty than you.”
