We help students make Michigan their own.

We challenge students to discover and pursue their passions.

With more than 40,000 students on campus, Michigan can be an intimidating place. From Greek life to residence halls to student organizations, we create communities that make Michigan feel more personalized and connected.

We provide students with real-world learning opportunities.Students spend about 14 hours in the classroom each week. Every moment in between, Student Life is there to further their learning. We help students acquire the practical skills needed to apply their world-class education to solving worldwide problems.

We introduce students to new ideas and causes, expanding their worldview and developing a strong sense of civic responsibility. With this backbone of support, students leave campus confident in their ability to lead change across the globe.

eadership is at the heart of the Michigan experience and is the cornerstone for our work in Student Life. To ensure that every student has access to leadership education, we are constructing a robust leadership development model that engages students throughout their entire education. This initiative calls for intensive, personalized leadership training that takes place beyond the classroom.

Leadership Connection, Intercultural Leadership Seminar, and LeaderShape are all weeklong seminars offered to a select number of students throughout the year. Your support will broaden the reach of these programs, providing transformational leadership experiences to a greater number of students and student organizations on campus.

It is our responsibility to prepare students as leaders for life after graduation. With your generosity, they will be able to develop their personal leadership potential, gaining the confidence and practice needed to lead positive change for the rest of their lives.

My involvement with student organizations defined my Michigan experience – I can’t explain how much I benefited. I made it a priority to best prepare myself as a leader of these groups, taking advantage of all the programming Michigan had to offer. Through LeaderShape and Leadership Connection, I became more self-aware of my capabilities. Michigan provides an ideal environment for this work – it’s a safe yet challenging space where people feel comfortable taking risks. At Michigan, you prepare your soul for what you want to do.

My time here could be considered a sort of 5-year internship, learning how to lead change in a high-stakes environment. My first job as an alum will be creating a network of student organizations at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. I was asked to lead this effort because I’ve become familiar with what it takes to be a successful leader through my involvement at Michigan. I have the exact skills they’re looking for – skills that all Wolverines have.

xceptional leaders have the insight to see where change is needed and the power of mind to make a difference. As a public institution, it is therefore our goal to spark a strong sense of social responsibility in all of our students.

At the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning, our students are making a significant impact in Southeastern Michigan. By connecting volunteers to imminent social causes, we help students learn firsthand the importance of intentional community engagement.

In order to involve more students, we must provide a greater continuum of experiences – from one-time volunteering to long-term placements. By providing scholarships that defray costs of participation, you help ensure these opportunities for a broader and more diverse student population.

Michigan is positioned to lead global social change, and we owe students the chance to recognize their responsibility to society. With your support, all Michigan students can become such leaders, choosing to incorporate social responsibility into their lifework – regardless of the careers they pursue.

I joined Alternative Spring Break (ASB) freshman year and ended up leading a trip to a youth center in Chicago. These aren’t community service trips - they’re service learning trips, and most of the learning happens during reflection time at the end of each day. People have the chance to open up to the rest of the group, sharing personal moments of realization. What we learned from Chicago was that we’re all very fortunate, and our privilege provides us with a responsibility to support those who have less than we do.

Some people think they can change the world in one week – that’s never the case. The real point of these trips is to build awareness and then do something with it when you return. We came back to campus with a deeper understanding of issues surrounding education, and decided to start a student group focusing around issues of youth and learning. What I’ve found is that, however much you put into ASB, the personal benefit you receive from it is so much more.

e are working to shift the collegiate paradigm so that all students prioritize their personal health and wellness. Through a holistic approach that connects mind, body, and spirit, we meet students where they are, always honoring their experiences and encouraging their efforts.

With your partnership, we will bring health and wellness to life on campus. Your support provides the necessary resources to creatively address campus health concerns – from eating disorders, to alcohol and drug abuse, to student mental health. By helping establish state-of-the-art Wellness Centers throughout our facilities, our students will have greater access to both physical and psychological support.

We must help all students develop lifelong health and wellness skills so they can fully achieve their academic and personal potential. With your help, students will learn that self-care isn’t just beneficial; rather, it is essential to finding meaningful, long-term success at Michigan and beyond.

In high school, athletics were a big part of my life. When I came to Michigan, I wanted to take advantage of the strong Recreational Sports department and ended up playing just about every intramural sport offered. With how much emphasis Michigan places on academics, Rec Sports is a great way to blow-off steam and provides you with essential fitness on campus.

I started organizing teams my freshmen year just because I wanted to have some fun, but I ended up meeting my future housemates and best friends. Getting involved in Rec Sports allows you to form close relationships with people you otherwise would never meet. Looking back now, we probably spent too much time making game-plans and practicing, but at that moment winning the next IM tournament meant everything. It really defined my time at Michigan.

At Michigan, we place value in developing a strong sense of self and connecting interculturally with others. For many, college is the first time students begin to consider their social identities as part of a larger, multifaceted community.

With your partnership, we can increase opportunities for students to engage in the diversity of Michigan. Throughout Student Life, from the Spectrum Center to the Program on Intergroup Relations and beyond, students can openly discuss differing identities while promoting a safe campus climate.

The International Center supports Michigan students who make international learning part of their collegiate experience. Whether supporting domestic students traveling abroad or international students without access to federal aid, you can help create immersive, life-changing experiences on a global level.

Michigan has provided me with the necessary skills to lead difficult conversations, bringing in people around challenging subjects. Through my involvement with the Spectrum Center, I decided to create my own student organization on campus - Race Sexuality Intersection - to focus energy around the intersection of different identities. I’m always challenging groups to question where and why they exist; but to do so effectively, I must first be critically aware of myself and my beliefs.

Engaging peers in these talks allows them to grow comfortable with that uncomfortable feeling. Wrestling with new narratives that you set forth as a facilitator, this is when others grow more aware of their own identities. As a Diversity Peer Educator next year in Oxford Housing, I’m excited to extend these moments of discovery to incoming students encountering conversations about privilege and social justice for the very first time. That’s something unique to Michigan - no student can walk through the doors of this place without having these critical conversations.

Students arrive on campus already exceptional scholars. To excel at Michigan and beyond, they need not only display success in the classroom, but also be able to speak to their passions, values, and capabilities. Through our Career Center, we teach students how to best share their stories with potential employers.

With your support, we can provide meaningful career exploration opportunities for all students to determine their professional goals. The Public Service Internship Program prepares students to obtain summer internships in Washington D.C. and supports participants while living in our nation’s capital. Our Career Immersions Program features “day-in-the-life” experiences where students engage in diverse companies – gaining insight into the hiring expectations for internship and full-time opportunities.

With the cost of education at an all-time high, pressures have never been greater for students to secure meaningful employment after graduation. With your help, our students gain a strong sense of what matters to them most, pursuing their passions in their future careers.

When I visited Michigan, I knew right away that its size would provide me with more opportunities than any other university could. I always knew political science was in my future, and I was told about the Public Service Internship Program (PSIP) by an advisor who knew about my goals. Beyond helping me secure my internship in Washington DC, PSIP set me up with a network of friends and a professional mentor in the State Department. Michigan alums make up 4% of the DC area’s total population, so you arrive already feeling connected to the community that’s there.

Through the summer, I gained keen insight and connections to our political system, providing me with confidence that I can find a career when I graduate. Just as important, the friendships I developed through PSIP further shaped my professional goals. I really couldn’t see myself having this experience at any institution except the University of Michigan.
