Wheelchairs for Kids Inc
VOLUME 14 ISSUE 84
REHABILITATION IN TANZANIA
MAKING A DIFFERENCE ...
WHERE IT MATTERS.
2017 JANUARY - MARCH
Produced by Volunteers for Volunteers
Since 1998 a Project of the Rotary Club of Scarborough, Western Australia, assisted by The Christian Brothers.
This 5 year old boy (left) from Abiansemal in Bali is unable to walk but crawls super
quickly. As a lively new Solebuddy*, he will now be able to accompany his friends and
get into even more mischief.
In his wheelchair he could immediately propel himself forwards and backwards.
* A “Solebuddy” is someone who has benefited from the charity called Solemen which is
dedicated to helping the disabled in Bali.
This fourteen year old boy (right) was born with spina bifida in the Arusha Region of
Tanzania. In 2016, through CCBRT, he received our wheelchair which enabled him to
move around and attend his local school. He is very active now and is doing very well at
school. He is able to participate in most of his school activities and is thriving in his
friendship group.

A Word from the CEO

CEO Gordon Hudson
Sometime in the future we are hoping to own our own
premises. Our Building Fund has just received a further very welcome
donation of $100, 000 from The Annie Millicent Child Care Foundation.
Hopefully a local Council will find us a block of land, and with a possible grant from the
Lotteries Commission and a builder that has offered to give his own time, things are
beginning to look good.
With our own premises, not only will we be able to save a lot of money in rent but it will
also ensure the longevity of our project.
In our last edition we featured a novel fund raiser, with our member Alan Bennett’s street
of magnificent Christmas lights.
Rattling tins at the numerous sightseers, over $14,000 was raised.
We are grateful to have so many people and organisations fund raising for us.
Last weekend we were able to promote our project
with a display and gave an address to delegates of 46
Rotary Clubs holding their annual district Conference
at Guildford. Much interest was shown and we have
already received financial and offers of practical
support.
At last we are back in production, after a couple of months at a standstill following our
Christmas break. This extended break was due to an unexpected hold up in the delivery
of parts from China. Luckily we have the ability to catch up on our intended wheelchair
deliveries. With the enthusiasm of our production workers we have increased production
to 400 wheelchairs per month!
Our rough terrain wheelchairs are subject to much more stress than the standard
wheelchair and our technical progress group have been working on a stronger tyre,
improved wheel bearings, a better harness, an improved headrest support, and a simpler
and much more robust tray.
Lastly. A reminder. Please don’t forget to talk about and spread
the word about our wonderful project.
Bye for now Gordon

The Craft Group represented by the seven women above has been
going for over 20 years. In that time the members have donated
more than 2000 blankets and knee rugs.
Knee rugs and blankets are donated with every wheelchair given to a
disabled child in a developing country.
Wheelchairs for Kids Inc. greatly appreciates this wonderful support.
(Next issue: Queen of the Apostles Parish Craft Group Riverton.)
Vote for one of our wonderful volunteers, Jean Eaton.
Jean is a prolific sewer of toolbags and nuts and bolts bags for Wheelchairs for Kids. At 93, Jean is an amazing lady.
Jean is a finalist in the WA People’s Choice Spirit of Volunteering Award.
