A Message from Our LeadershipDear Friends, At Boys & Girls Clubs, we are all about great futures! While we may support this organization for different reasons, we can agree that Boys & Girls Clubs is transforming the lives of our community’s youth in positive ways every day. Last year alone, more than 4,700 kids came through our doors. Thanks to the support and generosity of friends like you, they all had access to programs and resources which helped them prepare for great futures!

At the end of our fiscal year, we are proud to say that we’re continuing to grow and expand services for kids who need us most, right here in Wake County. Our seven Clubs are fully staffed with trained professionals, who work with our members through core programs, to encourage and instill healthy lifestyles, academic success, and also building good character and citizenship.

We are having great success with new initiatives such as the Academic Intervention Management program and the Collaborative STEM Initiative, which meet kids where they are, and help bridge the gap for those most at risk. In fact, with targeted support at the Clubs, 43 of the 45 youth in the Academic Intervention Management program were able to turn around poor grades, and move on to the next grade levels.

Each day, we strengthen our commitment to our Club members and the community. We adapt to the unique needs of the kids and families we serve, expanding program offerings, and opening new facilities—all while remaining affordable to those who need us most. For the better part of 40 years, our annual membership dues have remained just $7.50.

We are proud of our successes, but our work is far from over! With your help, we will continue building on the wonderful milestones and accomplishments we have achieved. We are thankful for your committed support, and helping us to provide great futures for kids in Wake County!

Highlights2014 was an exciting year for the Boys & Girls Clubs! Thanks to the generosity of friends like

you, our Clubs served 4,720 youth and teens. We broke ground on the new Ralph E. Capps

“The Club” Teen Center, and launched several innovative programs to better serve the changing

needs of our community. We had a lot of fun along the way, too—celebrating at the Breakfast

of Champions with the Carolina Hurricanes and Hall of Fame Inductee George Turner. We

also raised more than $1 million to support Club programs through our annual Positive Place

for Kids Campaign, and watched some of our very talented Club kids reach new milestones.

Here are just a few of the highlights from our amazing year:

Raleigh Boys Club’s Robotics

Program—called RoboBoys—

provided hands-on robotics

and coding education to

members. With the support

of FIRST Lego League, a

team from the Boys Club

competed in a regional

robotics competition,

placing 8th—one spot away

from qualifying for the State

Competition!

Thanks to the support

of friends and corporate

partners, Boys & Girls Clubs

raised more than $1 million

during the annual Positive

Place for Kids Campaign!

Funds raised during the

Campaign help us keep

membership dues at just

$7.50 to ensure that our

programs and services at all

seven Clubs and summer

day camp are available to

youth who need us most.

Our Club members are

artists in the making!

Boys & Girls Clubs members

from the Brentwood, Wake

Forest and Zebulon Clubs

won several awards for their

artwork this year, including

Regional Art awards in

categories like mixed media

and photography!

More than 500 kids and

teens received services

through our Healthy Vision

program with the help of

EyeCare Associates. The

program provides vision

screenings, assessments and

eyewear to kids with little or

no access to insurance.

Burroughs Wellcome

Foundation, Time Warner

Cable, Biogen IDEC,

Duke Energy, and others,

the Raleigh Boys Club

and Raleigh Girls Club

completed the first full year

of the Collaborative STEM

Initiative (CSI) Program,

providing hands-on STEM

education to more than 120

kids in weekly 90-minute

sessions and opening

a whole new world of

possibilities for our kids.

With the help of a GOAL

grant from the Kids ’N

Community Foundation,

Boys & Girls Clubs

launched Project Power

Play—a targeted academic

intervention program for

Club members identified as

being at high risk of grade

failure or drop out. The pilot

year was a great success so

far! With intensive support,

43 of the 45 kids in the

program advanced to the

next grade level!

The 2014 Breakfast of

Champions event featured

Carolina Hurricanes Head

Coach Kirk Muller and

raised more than $145,000

to support Club programs.

During the event, Boys &

Girls Clubs longtime Past

Board Member George

Turner was inducted into our

Hall of Fame.

Boys & Girls Clubs is proud

to honor Chris Williams

from our Zebulon Boys

& Girls Club as the 2014

Youth of the Year. During

the intensive program,

more than 30 youth

learned public speaking

and presentation skills and

competed to represent the

organization as “Youth of

the Year.” Congratulations to

all our finalists!

Teens from all seven Clubs competed for the honor of representing their Club and the organization as the 2014 Youth of the Year. Congratulations to all of our Youth of the Year candidates and the 2014 organizational Youth of the Year, Chris Williams.

Teen Center GroundbreakingOn October 24, 2013, Boys & Girls Clubs celebrated a major milestone: the official groundbreaking of the Ralph E. Capps “The Club” Teen Center on Raleigh Boulevard, named in honor of the organization’s longtime President and CEO, Ralph E. Capps. Under the guidance of BE THE ONE Campaign leadership which includes Campaign Co-Chairs Prentiss Baker, Noel Lichtin, and Michael Dickinson, the new Teen Center is the second major construction

project of the Capital Campaign (with the new Zebulon Boys & Girls Club opening in winter 2012). Building Committee members Martin Borden, Chair; Kim Swintosky; Austin Barnhill;

Earl Johnson, III; Tish Turner; Chris Harrell; and Bill White selected Dan Huffman Architecture to design the new structure and Williams Realty and Building to erect the new facility. This completes the Boys & Girls Clubs trio of Clubhouse facilities and an administrative office on Raleigh Boulevard.

Since 2007, the Boys & Girls Clubs Teen Center had been housed in the Alliance Medical Ministries facility in Southeast Raleigh. The new Ralph E. Capps “The Club” Teen Center, designed to increase the organization’s capacity to serve more teens, will feature a variety of new and innovative programs, including a full-service grill/restaurant concept called the “Pro-Teen Grill” run by teens, technical

“The technical training that will be provided at the Teen Center is the perfect option for

teens who want to learn a trade or go directly into the workforce after high school.”

— Chris Cook, Director of the Teen Center

training in culinary arts, digital arts such as photography and videography, and cosmetology/barber training.

Chris Cook, Director of the Teen Center stated, “Our main focus with the new building is to prepare teens for life after high school graduation. The technical training that will be provided at the Teen Center is the perfect option for teens who want to learn a trade or go directly into the workforce after high school.”

Groundbreaking and construction of this project was made possible through the generous contributions and support of the community, including corporate, foundation, and individual donors as well as support from Wake County. The new Teen Center opened the first day of the 2014–15 school year.

Project Power PlayWith the generous support of the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ’N Community Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs is piloting a targeted academic intervention program to assist youth most at risk of grade failure and school dropout. Working closely with students, parents, teachers, and school administrators, our full-time Academic Intervention Manager provides intensive academic support for members in one-on-one and small group settings two-three times per week. The program is currently being piloted at three of our Clubs—the Raleigh Boys Club, Raleigh Girls Club, and Washington Elementary Club—and is showing great success! In fact, thanks to the targeted intervention provided by Project Power Play, 43 of the 45 young people enrolled in the program advanced to the next grade level at the end of last school year!

Targeted Literacy EducationTo help youth excel in the classroom during the school year and pre-vent summer learning loss during out-of-school time, our Clubs offer

targeted literacy education through programs like Club Koala, Read to Achieve, and See Spot Read. In these programs, youth increase reading comprehension, gain exposure to language arts and develop a love of reading.

Academic SuccessAcademic support offered each day in our Clubs helps to to ensure that young people

graduate from high school prepared for successful adulthood. Specialized programs like Your Academics Matter (YAM), Gym Rats Eat

Book Worms, Read to Lead, Get Performing Academically, Club KOALA, Summer

Brain Gain, RoboBoys robotics league, the Collaborative STEM Initiative (CSI), and others

help young people strengthen basic skills, prepare for successful futures, and build the confidence

they need to enter the classroom ready to learn.

Our Clubs provided more than 450,000 hours of targeted academic support, tutoring, and educational enrichment to Club members this year.

98% of members who attend our Clubs four or more years graduate from high school.

Good Character & CitizenshipGood Character & Citizenship programs like Youth for Unity, Torch Club, Trees Across Raleigh, Keystone Club, Youth of the Year and others in our Clubs help young people develop a greater sense of connection and learn valuable leadership skills while making a positive investment in their communities.

Youth of The YearOur Youth of the Year program recognizes exceptional members who are leaders in their Club and community. Nominees at each Club are paired with mentors and compete for the honor of representing their Club as the Youth of the Year—the highest honor the organization can bestow on a Club member.

During the six-month program, nominees work with mentors to learn important leadership skills and build a roadmap to their future goals while focusing on academic success and service to the community. Participants also receive scholarships to help further their education.

Culminating with the Youth of the Year Luncheon, one outstanding member is selected as the Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year, going on to represent the Club at regional and national competitions and serve as an ambassador in the community.

Keystone Club & Torch ClubKeystone Club (for teens 14–18) and Torch Club (for youth 11–13) provide fundamental leadership training and positive community involvement for Club members. These specialized programs help youth connect with their peers to undertake projects important to their Club, their community, and the nation. Members plan and carry out projects with guidance from adult advisors. Examples include: canned food drives, clothing drives to help end youth homelessness and support natural disaster relief, anti-bullying projects and much more.

Youth and teens in our Clubs provided more than 2,000 hours of service to the community through programs and youth-led special projects last year.

This year, Boys & Girls Clubs members provided more than 2,000 hours of service to the community.

Healthy LifestylesHelping young people build a solid foundation in health and wellness is essential for ensuring

their success as adults. Boys & Girls Clubs offers several unique programs in this core area, such

as league sports, Soccer for Success, ice hockey through the Capital City Crew program, daily sports and recreation activities, SMART Moves

drug tobacco, and alcohol resistance training; nutrition education. Camp BTI, gardening

programs…and much more!

Healthy Vision Program In partnership with EyeCare Associates, Boys & Girls Clubs have begun piloting a Healthy Vision program for our members. Through this program, youth from all seven of our locations who have little or no access to insurance have the opportunity to be screened by an optometrist and, when needed, receive corrective eyewear! For many of the children in our Clubs, this program has provided their first opportunity to

see an eye doctor and address vision issues that many didn’t even realize they had—which can have drastic effects on self-esteem, performance in school, and ultimately success in life.

Not only have hundreds of youth received vision services, but the program has helped detect serious vision issues such as glaucoma and optic nerve damage in some youth who didn’t realize they were having issues seeing clearly!

Youth participated in more than 535,000 hours of Healthy Lifestyles programming at our Clubs.

522 youth were screened in the Healthy Vision Program. 139 of those youth received glasses through the program.
