He goes on: “no one is good but God alone.” All our efforts to do good are going to be in vain, because we’re not much good at being good. It is impossible for us to enter God’s kingdom, impossible to inherit eternal life, impossible to be happy, steady now, by our own efforts. Phew, there is help then, because the central part of our Gospel says, it is what Jesus does that really saves us. Jesus looked steadily at that young man, who is us of course, and loved him. We are saved not by our own efforts, but by and through Jesus’ love for us. Love is the link between the omnipotent God who can do everything, and impotent humanity, who can do nothing without their creator. Being good is not an adequate condition for being a disciple of Jesus. What is more, it is not even a necessary condition. There's something even more fundamental than goodness, and without this 'something' that's even more basic than goodness, we can not even get started on the journey to the Kingdom. A complete response to Jesus’ love doesn’t just mean giving a few pennies or pounds, or, if we but had them, thousands of pounds. A total response to Jesus’ love means a total giving of all that we are and all that we have to Jesus. Jesus is not asking us to embrace absolute poverty. That's a special vocation, to which only a few of us are called. Most of us need to earn a living, for we have family responsibilities, which we should not abandon. And there is certainly no harm in enjoying the good things in life in moderation. Nevertheless, in different ways we are all called to follow Jesus with total commitment. And that ‘something’? It is the recognition that we can be as good as we like, but if we think we are sufficient to ourselves, then we shut God, who Jesus proclaimed, out of our lives. Christian discipleship means following Jesus, and keeping nothing back. Dcn Andy Philpott THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK: 1. ‘How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God’ Jesus says (Gospel). Entry is dependent on God!! God’s invitation, God’s grace, God’s gift. All we have to do is say ‘yes’ (come, follow me…..). How do you say ‘yes’? When do you say ‘yes’? 2. ‘I prayed … I entreated …I esteemed her …’ (1st reading). When have you prayed, entreated or ‘esteemed’ God? Why? How did you feel? 3. ‘The word of God is alive and active’ (2nd reading). How alive is ‘the Word’ in your life? How active in your day to day existence? How can you make/allow it to become more alive and active? Vincent Harvey

WHEN BEING GOOD IS NOT QUITE ENOUGH

I am hesitant to lower your spirits, but really that might be how we see the beginning of today’s Gospel. “No one is good,” Jesus says.

Dcn Andy Philpott

APF—MILL HILL MISSION THANK YOU & APPEAL.

We welcome Father Vincent Oates MHM who will speak at St Joseph Church at 6:15pm and 10am Masses on this

weekend on behalf of APF—Mill Hill and their Missionary work. Appeal is to encourage parishioners to become members and take a Red Mission Box.

St Edmund’s appeal will be held in February 2019.

WELCOME RITES at 9am and 10am Masses.

PARISH THEME OCTOBER—Peace through Racial and

Cultural Unity: Martin Luther King lived, fought and died for his ideal of the equality of mankind. He said he looked to a day “when people will not be judged by the

colour of their skin but by the content of their character.” He also said that God was only interested in the

freedom of the whole human race that “We may all have come on different ships but we’re in the same boat

now….. We must learn to live together as brothers (and, by implication, sisters!) or perish together as fools.” Let us pray that this brave man’s battle is remembered as we

work for the same ideals.

POPE FRANCIS’ INTENTION FOR OCTOBER: Evangelisation: The Mission of Religious. That consecrated religious men and women may bestir

themselves and be present among the poor, the marginalised, and those who have no voice.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION PROGRAMME 1ST WORKSHOP from 2pm—4:30pm Sunday14 October in

St Boniface Church Hall for all candidates.

FINAL ANNUAL MASS COUNT will take place this

weekend.

PRISON SUNDAY TODAY marks the annual day of

prayer and action within the Catholic community in England and Wales, with the message to ‘Go Beyond’ to

help the most vulnerable in local communities. Please look out for Pact’s Prisoners’ Sunday posters, leaflets and

envelopes if you visit a church between now and the end of Prison Week on 20 October.

Pact was formed from small beginnings, in 1898, when our records show we helped a child who had no one to

care for her. Her name, fittingly, was Roots. Today we work in 64 prisons as well as in many Courts and local community settings, and last year we helped thousands

of prisoners, and almost a quarter of a million children and families to maintain contact with their loved ones.

The Prisons Week Prayer - Lord, you offer freedom to all people. We pray for those in prison. Break the bonds of fear

and isolation that exist. Support with your love prisoners and their families and friends, prison staff and all who care.

Heal those who have been wounded by the actions of others, especially the victims of crime. Help us to forgive

one another, to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly together with Christ in his strength and in his Spirit, now and every day. Amen.

PARISH MISSION 2019 COUNTDOWN … 227 days until our Parish Mission next year! Fr Des has written a Mission Prayer which has been distributed to all groups in the

parish. It is vital that the mission is underpinned by prayer and starting now! This comes with an important message for us all to begin praying now. We are being asked and encouraged to begin our meetings with the mission prayer in order that we can prepare as a parish for this exciting venture. Watch this space! MISSION PRAYER: I thank you almighty and ever loving Father for you have created me in such a way that I am able to experience and become a source of your merciful presence to my neighbour. Give me a renewed desire and the courage to be still in your presence. Allow your Holy Spirit to renew my inner-life. As I grow ever more conscious of my vocation to be a Disciple of your Son Jesus, with Mary as my companion on this journey; may your Light shine more brightly within me, your Love be shared more widely through me and my Gospel Witness be profound. Amen

WELCOME TO MONSIGNOR CANON NICHOLAS FRANCE who has retired from Jersey into the Parish here in City Centre. Many of you will know Father Nick as a former Parish Priest and Dean of the City (before Canon John O’Shea). As with most retired priests, Father Nick will be

available for ‘supply’ work, to assist parishes in the area when the local clergy need a break, are sick etc. Welcome ‘home’ Father Nick …

WELCOME TO FATHER JOE MCNERNEY the new RC Hospital Chaplain who was ‘Inducted’ last week. Father Joe

comes to us from Portsmouth where he was Hospital Chaplain and Parish Priest. In his role here in Southampton he is part of the Chaplaincy Team with particular responsibility for Catholic Patients. His days off will continue to be covered by the local clergy. If a family member is going into the General Hospital

please let your local priest know (in case they require ‘Anointing’ before being admitted); also inform the Hospital Chaplaincy requesting a visit by the Team and, if appropriate, Holy Communion (or to arrange to attend the afternoon Mass in the Hospital)

ABORTION BILL REPEAL: On the 23rd October a ‘Ten Minute Rule Bill’ is being brought to the Commons to repeal sections 58 & 89 of the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act. This is primarily a law which governs abortion in Northern Ireland and the basic legal protection against abortion in England and Wales. The bill seeks to

decriminalise abortion which would remove any effective legal protection for unborn babies and their mothers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Please take a postcard in the porch if you wish to contact your MP House of Commons. DEAR FRIENDS AT ST. EDMUND´S we would like to thank you all for your kindness and support during the difficult

months we had before leaving the UK. You gave us the strength to face the challenges and now we are fully settled in this new chapter of our lives in Mexico. School and work are fine and we are getting involved with the activities in our Parish. You are always in our prayers and thoughts and if you

feel like having a holiday here, please visit us. It would be lovely to hear from you. God Bless, Héctor, Beatriz, María and Sara Olivas. Mob. No. +52 998 242 3529 (for Whatsapp too); email address [email protected]
