Adventism holds that the world is evil and that it will be destroyed by divine intervention. The wicked will perish in this destruction while the righteous will be saved (spared). After this cataclysm, Jesus Christ will reign triumphant through the 1,000 year Millennial period. The whole Adventist thesis rests heavily on the prophetic texts of Daniel and Revelation.

As a religious movement Adventism began with a widespread “awakening” on the question of the advent which developed simultaneously in Europe and in America in the early decades of the 19th century (1800’s). In America, the movement became strongest under the leadership of a Baptist named William Miller, a veteran of the war of 1812 and a man respected as a diligent student even though he did not have formal college or seminary training. The movement under Miller was at first an intrachurch(within churches and between different churches- as opposed to starting new separate Adventist churches) development, with many Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, and Congregationalists among its adherents. It was thus, at first, a movement within existing churches with no intention or attempt to organize a separate denomination.

For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. So influential was William Miller that for years his followers were known as Millerites. Miller himself became a Baptist in 1816 and soon began studying the scriptures, concentrating on the prophesies of Daniel and Revelation.

Daniel 8:14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

In his studies Miller became convinced that the “sanctuary” mentioned in Daniel 8:14 was actually the earth, which would be cleansed by fire at the time of the Second Advent. Furthermore, he came to believe that this cleansing would occur sometime between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844.

Matthew 24:42 - Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Mark 13:32-33 - But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.

When the great expectation failed to materialize by the spring of 1844, many left the

movement. However, Miller’s associates then set a second date, October 22, 1844, which they calculated would be the great antitypical Day of Atonement (Antitype = the real thing which the Jewish Day of Atonement typifies or pictures). By this time there were between 50,000 to 100,000 Adventists in the United States. Hundreds of them, perhaps even thousands, disposed of their property in anticipation of the Advent. As the day of expectation approached, they gave away their goods, settled all their accounts, and waited prayerfully. Soon, October 22 came and passed with no Second Coming. Vast numbers, including Miller himself, lost interest in Adventism and went back to their former churches.

Others, however, clung to Adventism and from the shambles of the confused date setting movement there emerged various groups with differing doctrinal peculiarities. Some of these groups were gradually formed into Seventh-Day Adventism. (Handbook of Denominations- Frank Mead)

Among the former Millerites who clung to Adventism was a young woman named Ellen Harmon (1827-1915). In 1846, Ellen married another former Millerite, James White. Because of her “gift of prophesy” Ellen G. White soon emerged as a leader among Adventists who accepted her visions and writings as equally authoritative as the Bible. In time her “claimed writings” would come to be 17 times the length of the Bible. Adventists were to look to her 5,000 articles, 49 books, and 55,000 manuscript pages for ‘further revelation’. Eventually, however, it was discovered that many of these writings were plagiarized. Nevertheless, Seventh Day Adventism today still says that in addition to the Bible, “Her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth.”

After the failed Adventist expectation of Oct 1844, Ellen according to her own testimony entered into a hopeless condition for months. Then, in December 1844, she received her first prophecy which was termed the midnight cry. According to this vision, those Adventists who had given up on the October 22, 1844 date had fallen off of the path to heaven and were condemned with the lost. Ellen was sticking by this date, but she now claimed that Christ was not to come on this date, rather the door of mercy was closed on this date. For some time Ellen stood by this new “shut door doctrine”, but this posed a problem. What about Adventist children born after October 22, 1844? Finally, around 1851, 2 Millerites – Hiram Edson and Mr. Crosier- developed a new doctrine which would solve this dilemma. They also held to the October 1844 date but

theorized that Christ did not come or shut a door, rather He entered for the 1st time into the Most Holy Place in heaven to begin “Investigative Judgment”.

According to this “Investigative Judgment” or “sanctuary doctrine” as it is sometimes called, a ‘recording angel’ is busy recording every detail of our lives and storing the records is heaven. On October 22, 1844, Christ entered the Most Holy place in heaven to judge people one at a time by these records until He comes again. According to their doctrine, which has no scriptural basis or support, every believers name will come up in judgment one at a time. A person must always be on their toes spiritually because each person’s judgment could be at any time and is based on their spiritual standing at the time of the judgment. If any faults or any disobedience to one of the commandments (especially the fourth) are found, then the individual will be lost. It is supposed that this ‘investigation’ will determine the eternal destinies of all men. This doctrine of Investigative Judgment is central to 7th Day Adventism.

Near the time of the expected advent in the fall of 1844, there was given to Hazen Foss, a young Adventist, a revelation. Shortly after, he was bidden to relate the vision to others but was unwilling to do so. He was warned of God that if he refused to relate the vision to others, the light would be given to someone else. After a severe mental conflict, he decided that he would not relate the visions. Then, very strange feelings came to him and a voice said, ‘You have grieved away the Spirit of the Lord’.

Horrified at his stubbornness and rebellion, he told the Lord that he would relate the vision, but when he attempted to do so before a group of believers, he could not call it to mind. In vain were his attempts to call up the scenes as they had been shown to him; and then in deep despair he exclaimed, ‘It is gone from me,; I can say nothing, and the Spirit of the Lord has left me.’ Then, early in 1845, Foss heard Ellen Harmon (later Ellen G. White) relate her 1st vision to the company of “believers” in Portland, Maine. He recognized her account as a description of what was shown him. Upon meeting her the next morning, he recounted his experience of which she had not known, and encouraged her to faithfully perform her work, stating: ‘I believe the visions are taken from me and given to you. Do not refuse to obey God, for it will be at the peril of your soul. I am a lost man. You are chosen of God’ On comparing dates, they discovered that it was not until after he had

been told that the visions were taken from him, that Ellen received her first revelation.”

Included in Mrs. White’s biography, Messenger to the Remnant, are six pages of testimonies from various witnesses to Mrs. White’s visions. These are included in the biography to help establish confidence in the “divine” origin of the visions through presentation of the strange phenomena surrounding the visions. Some of these testimonies are descriptions of medical examinations which were conducted during her vision experiences.

General Phenomena- “For about four or five seconds she seems to drop down like a person in a swoon, or one having lost his strength; she then seems to be instantly filled with super-human strength, sometimes rising at once to her feet and walking about the room. There are frequent movements of the hands an arms, pointing to the right or left as her head turns. In whatever position the hand or arm may be placed, it is impossible le for anyone to move it. Her eyes are always open, but she does not wink; her head is raised, and she is looking upward, not with a vacant stare, but with a pleasant expression, only differing from the normal in that she appears to be looking intently at some distant object.”

No Breathing- “M. G. Kellogg, M.D. … I am quite certain that she did not breathe at that time while in vision…. A lighted candle was held close to her eyes, which were wide

open; not a muscle of the eye moved. he then examined her in regard to her pulse and also in regard to her breathing, and there was no respiration”

Holding Heavy Bibles- “As they closed this part of the examination, she arose to her feet, still in vision, holding a Bible high up, turning from passage to passage, quoting correctly, although her eyes were looking upward and away from the book.. While in vision, Ellen Harmon stepped over to a bureau upon which rested the large volume (18 ½ pound family Bible), picked it up, placed it on her left hand, and then, extending it at arm’s length, held the closed book with ease for half an hour… Under ordinary circumstances she was unable to pick up this book, for she was in frail health and at that time weighed only eighty pounds. She was in no way fatigued by the experience.”

First Vision: While praying at the family altar, the Holy Ghost fell on me, and I seemed to be rising higher and higher, far above the dark world. I turned to look for the Advent people in the world, but could not find them-when a voice said to me, "Look again, and look a little higher." At this I raised my eyes and saw a straight and narrow path, (a) cast up high above the world. On this path the Advent people were traveling to the City, which was at the farther end of the path. They had a bright light set up behind them at the first end of the path, which an angel told me was the Midnight Cry. (b) This light shone all along the path, and gave light for their feet so they might not stumble. And if they kept their eyes fixed on Jesus, who was just before them, leading them to the City, they were safe. But soon some grew weary, and they said the City was a great way off, and they expected to have entered it before. Then Jesus would encourage them by raising his glorious right arm, and from his arm came a glorious light which waved over the Advent band, and they shouted Hallelujah! Others rashly denied the light behind them, and said that it was not God that had led them out so far. The light behind them went out leaving their feet in perfect darkness, and they stumbled and got their eyes off the mark and lost sight of Jesus, and fell off the path down in the dark and wicked world below. It was just as impossible for them to get on the path again and go to the City, as all the wicked world which God had rejected.

Here it is made clear that she believed that it was too late for anyone else to get saved after 1844. But that is changed later on with her….

Second Vision (Bridegroom Vision): I saw the Father rise from the throne, and in a flaming chariot go into the holy of holies within the veil, and sit down. Then Jesus rose up from the throne, and the most of those who were bowed down arose with Him. I did not see one ray of light pass from Jesus to the careless multitude after He arose, and they were left in perfect darkness. Those who arose when Jesus did, kept their eyes fixed on Him as He left the throne and led them out a little way. Then He raised His right arm, and we heard His lovely voice saying, "Wait here; I am going to My Father to receive the kingdom; keep your garments spotless, and in a little while I will return from the wedding and receive you to Myself."

See? The door wasn’t shut forever, we just have to wait a while longer.

The Whites had four children- all boys- and they worked together to establish the Adventist movement until James’ death in October 1881. Often James and Ellen would speak at the same meetings. Ellen lived and labored for thirty-four years following James’ death. Eleven of those years were spent in Europe and Australia, helping establish the SDA movement in those continents.

Ellen G White was involved in an aggressive public speaking ministry. “A much sought-after public speaker, she was often invited to address those who attended important gatherings of the church. As a revival speaker she was well known. As a temperance lecturer she reached her largest audiences. She met literally thousands of speaking appointments”During the seventy years between 1844 and 1915, it is claimed that Mrs. White received approximately 2,000 visions and dreams. Throughout her life, she and her denomination were guided by these profuse visions. Through these she was instructedconcerning 1) the supposed divine origin of the Adventist movement, 2) the investigative judgment, 3) the importance of Sabbath-worship, 4) the SDA health movement, 5) worldwide Adventist literature outreach, 6) the worldwide Adventist school system, 7) even the financial systems and ecclesiastical organization of the SDA church.

Thus we see that the major guiding influence of the SDA Church has been, from its inception, the visions and interpretations of Ellen G. White. While Adventist leadersclaim that the Bible is their sole rule for faith and conduct, the fact is that without Ellen White there would be no Seventh-day Adventism. Since there are many Bible reasons for believing Mrs. White’s prophetic ministry was not of God, it follows that the denomination founded upon this ministry was also not of God.

The Great Controversy also includes Satan as a co-sin bearer. He, according to EGW, is the scapegoat on whom all the world's sins are laid at the final judgment, and he is punished more than everyone else for causing us to sin. In other words, Jesus' suffering for our sins didn't really take care of them. They are still unpunished. Satan will bear the final punishment for our sins.

The Great Controversy also suggests that WE will help Jesus to win. We are the ones who will "vindicate God"

Though they often deny this, the Adventist denomination teaches that salvation is by grace plus law, faith plus works. Grace, according to Adventist theology, is the power and forgiveness God gives to enable a sinner to keep the law and to thereby build a holy character fit for Heaven. He who fails to build the right character by God’s grace will never see Heaven. Faith and works are the two oars by which the believer is propelled to glory.The Bible teaches that salvation is by grace alone without works.

Romans 3:28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

According to SDA doctrine, the Sabbath is eternally binding upon men from creation. It was made for mankind in general and was given to Adam in the Garden of Eden. Sabbath-keeping therefore, is a sign of loyalty to God, the creator. The Sabbath, though mentioned in Gen 2:2-3, was not given to man until it was given to Israel in the wilderness (Nehemiah 9:13-14). The Sabbath was given, not to mankind in general, but to Israel alone as a special covenant sign between her and God (Ex 31:13, 17).)

Seventh Day Adventism teaches that the Sabbath continues to be binding upon New Testament Christians.The N.T. is the only guide of what part of the Mosaic law continues to be important for the church age believer. The N.T. plainly teaches that the believer today is not bound to the Sabbath law.

Colossians 2:16-17Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

This SDA doctrine states, “When a man dies he does not live somewhere else. He is not in heaven, not in hell, not in purgatory. He is not alive at all, anywhere, in any condition whatsoever. He is dead. And to be dead does not mean to be alive. It means simply an end of life. So in death there is no life. The man does not live; the body does not live; the soul does not live; the spirit does not live; the mind does not live. Intelligence ends, consciousness ends, memory ends, knowledge ends, thought ends. All that has comprised the man ends.” They believe that men remain in this state of soul sleep until they are resurrected to eternal life or annihilation.The bible does refer at times to death as a sleep- this speaks of laying the body to rest not some sort of soul sleep.

[Gen 35:18] And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.

The soul doesn’t sleep, it departs.

Luke 16:22-23And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in

Seventh Day Adventists claim that eternal torment in hell is a false doctrine. They say, “sinners will not live forever. The plain doctrine of the Bible is that the devil and all his works will be destroyed, utterly destroyed.”

The Bible speaks of two judgments but nothing like Investigative Judgment. The Judgment Seat of Christ- before which the saved will appear. This judgment is based on works but only to determine heavenly rewards not their eternal destination which has already been settled.The Great White Throne Judgment- before which the unsaved will appear. This judgment is based on works without grace.

Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of GodIt is not so much to determine the fate of the sinner but more of the sentencing phase of the trial.
