Meals on Wheels Receives Commercial Property Donation

Meals on Wheels has received an amazing donation of commercial property located in the Tri-Cities

area! This generous donation will be reserved for future equipment maintenance, repair, and replace-

ment to ensure that we have a high-quality and well-functioning kitchen well into the future.

Although our donors choose to remain anonymous, they hope their donation will set a positive exam-

ple for others in the community to consider making Meals on Wheels a priority in their charitable

giving and estate planning. As former volunteers who delivered meals for many years, our donors

saw firsthand the impact of Meals on Wheels service in providing not only a warm and nutritious

meal, but also the daily well-being check.

Our donors experienced one particularly impactful delivery day, when two of their clients didn’t

answer their doors. The donors were unable to make contact with the first client, but they knocked

repeatedly at the second home and eventually heard a weak voice calling for help. They were able to

enter the home and found the senior on the floor, disoriented and unable to get up. They called 911,

and the client was rescued. Emergency contacts for the first nonresponsive client were also called,

and it turned out that the lady had passed away.

Our donors share: “We have not been able to forget that day. Now that we are getting older, we realize

how important it is to us to stay independent and in our own home. We don’t qualify for Meals on

Wheels, but we hope that we can help those that do, and we hope others will join us in supporting this

valuable service.”

Happy New Year! It doesn’t seem possible but here it is, 2018! We look forward to a great year and working hard to make sure we are providing healthy and tasty meals. You may have seen the article in the newspaper, but if not, please check out the article below about a couple who donated a commercial property to Meals on Wheels. Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Doni Hansen! Doni has been volunteer-ing for Meals on Wheels for 11 years. She moved here from Yakima with her mother in 2005 and decided she needed something to do out of the house. You can find Doni at the Richland dining site helping to serve in the dining room, packaging food, bagging up frozen meals, and helping with clean-up. Doni loves her Site Manager, Michele, and real-ly enjoys all people. She must love her job be-cause she works on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and any other day Michele needs her! When not volunteering, Doni enjoys bowling for the Special Olympics. She is on the bowl-ing team and looks forward to the tournaments in the fall. Doni enjoys the Tri-Cities and the beautiful park she works next to. When she does relax, she spends time with her mother and her beau-tiful Shih Tzu dog, Bandit! Please say Hi to Doni when you see her, it will put a beautiful smile on her face!

Thank you Doni for your service to Meals on

Wheels!

When: Tuesday, January 16, 2 pm Where: Meals on Wheels Café

1834 Fowler St in Richland

To get to the Café: 1834 Fowler St in Richland 736-0045 North on Columbia Center Blvd to Fowler St Turn right on Fowler (Great Wall Restaurant) Continue East until Fowler runs into Fowler.

Turn left on Fowler. Café is behind Prestige Marine.

Soups are a fantastic way to include nearly all your food groups in one nutritious bowl. Many soups contain protein from meat or legumes, a varie-ty of vegetables, and whole grains like barley or quinoa. Soups are also great because they are usually packed with fiber, which is just what our bodies need. And soups are an affordable comfort food to keep us warm during the cold winter months! I’m excited to show you some great soup recipes that include a variety of color and nutrients.
