Contents of Wheels and Axles Kit

Wooden pieces (⅜” cross-section): 2 X 5”; 2 X 2½”; Green corner gussets: 1 card

Wooden dowel, 3/16” diam.: 2 X 4”Large wheels: 2

Medium wheels: 2Small wheels: 2Axle Holders: 5

White card: 1 pieceMini-washers: 8Stirring Sticks: 1

Plus a small piece of sandpaper

Lay the pieces of wood out as shown in the picture below. The long pieces are put down first and the smaller pieces are placed at their ends to form a shape called a “rectangle”.

Cut out from the green card four small triangles. Use a small amount of wood glue along the short edges of a triangle and

place it at a corner.Do the same for the other corners.

Allow the wood glue to dry!

Turn the frame over and glue four more green corners on the other side.

Turn the frame on its side. Glue a gray axle-holder with a hole in it onto the wooden piece so that the sharp point is touching

the end, as shown below.

Glue three more axle-holders onto the other corners in the same way.

Place the two axles through the holes and across the frame you have made.

Push four small black mini-washers onto the axles. Leave a little room between the mini-washers and the gray axle-

holders.

Choose four wheels and push them onto the axles. Check that the axles turn freely and that your vehicle moves on the floor.

Turn the vehicle over and test it out again. If it moves in an arc it is because the axles are not straight across the body. Finish

off the axles by pushing four mini-washers onto them.

If you glue the white cardboard sheet onto the vehicle, as shown, you can place different objects on it and discover how

the vehicle moves with different masses.
