I hope you had a great holiday season and are ready for 2017. I look forward to working with you all this year and will not be able to do this job without your help and participation. I would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. We are always open for new ideas. Get your cars ready for our spring tour in May to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. We want to thank the Emery's and Guttendorf's for planning the tour. The

itinerary sounds interesting. Get your reservations in now. Several of our members will be going to Palm Springs, CA in February to attend the VMCCA’s National Membership and Annual meeting. I hope you voted. We should have the results at that meeting. Jim and Edna Cross will be hosting our picnic but we are still looking for someone to plan a fall tour. Our Mid-Atlantic Region covers a lot of places we need to visit or other places you have been we can visit. Think about volunteering for a tour. I want to thank all the officers and appointees for volunteering to serve. They are listed in this newsletter. Thank them when you see them. Also thank Mike Murphy (and Sandy) for the years he was Vice Director. Our website: www.midatlanticvmcca.com is being updated. Let us know when you see something that needs changing. Mid-Atlantic had great participation on VMCCA national tours last year. We hope you will be able to attend some of the tours this year. Your help and participation with the Chrome Glidden tour in Roanoke in July will be appreciated.

Remembering Harry Hartman - 1950 -2017 Harry and Kathy joined the Mid-Atlantic Region in the Fall of 2014 and soon after their good friends Scott and Penny Smith joined so they could tour together. All four of them became quickly involved and attended the Annual Meeting in Warrenton. The following Spring they were in Chesapeake Beach for the Heritage Tour. In the JAS 2015 Wheels A Rolling Harry told the story of Mercury trucks and his two Mercury pickups he had acquired in Canada where they were made along with numerous photos of the trucks in various railroad settings. The Bulbhorn featured the trucks soon after. Harry wrote the story and provided photos for the Mid-Atlantic Kentucky tour in the Fall of 2015. This past year Harry and Kathy attended the annual picnic and did the Orphan Tour in Wisconsin. They had registered for the Brandywine Valley tour in September but had to cancel as it was discovered that Harry had significant health issues and was hospitalized. While club members only knew Harry for a short time we will all miss Harry with his special take on life and his passion for Mercury Trucks. (Below L-R 2014. Heritage, Picnic)

EXPLORING THE RIVERS, MARSHES, & WOODLANDS OF MARYLAND'S EASTERN SHORE

The tour will start the evening of Wednesday, May 17th with a fresh local strawberry extrava-ganza plus an introduction to the tour and region. A day's drive will typically cover about 50-60 miles. Thursday's fun will begin with a brief tour of a local, working boatyard that still uses a marine railway to haul boats for repair. We will then head out of town to the newly opened Harriet Tubman Museum and Park. We will drive to Hooper's Island for a delightful Eastern Shore buffet lunch at Old Salty's Restaurant. From there we head to Blackwater National Wildlife Refugee where there will be a video and talk about how nature has shaped this tidal wetland as a prime location for viewing eagles and osprey. (Blackwater is also a vital wintering ground for migratory birds, and we'll discover why.) You have the option of then doing the wildlife drive and/or walking nature trails as you desire. Dinner will be on your own, but you likely will not be too hungry after Old Salty's! On Friday we'll visit a local crab house where commercial picking and packing should be underway if the crabs cooperate (that's early in the season!). Next will be a stop for refreshments at the Cambridge Historical Society and a tour of their early buildings and exhibits. Dorchester County was home to six Maryland governors, most especially Governor Hicks who kept Maryland in the Union during the Civil War era. From there we will head out to St. Michaels via the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry with a picnic on the way. The afternoon and evening will be free to spend as you wish visiting St. Michaels Maritime Museum (a real gem), car museum, waterfront vistas, and the town's wide variety of shops. Our final day will start with a drive to the Adkins Arboretum. Hosts will lead us in small groups through this wonderful upland woodland where we should see many beautiful and blooming native plants. The tour will end with a luncheon cruise (crab cakes again! Oh, bother!) on the "Dorothy Megan", a paddlewheeler operated by the Suicide Bridge Restaurant. Suicide Bridge, an actual name, crosses Secretary Creek. The boat cruises from Secretary Creek out to and on the Choptank River. You can see more about the “Dorothy Megan” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOTTndh1zZs PLUS If there is interest, we can arrange a pre-tour charter on the skipjack sailboat "Nathan of Dorchester" for the first 20 people that send in their money, and also 1 1/2 hour walking tour of historic Cambridge covering an area that will not be part of our driving experiences. There is not a number limit on the walking tour. LODGING INFORMATION We have 35 rooms reserved at the Holiday Inn in Cambridge, MD. The rate is $129 plus taxes/night. Nancy Bradfield, Installed as Mid-Atlantic Region Director

at 2016 Annual Meeting Nancy Bradfield was installed as Director of the Mid-Atlantic Region for 2017 by David Oberender, a charter member, at the 2016 Annual Meeting in Warrenton, Virginia. Other officers installed were Becky Woodall, Vice Director, Scott Smith, Secretary and Alice Oberender, Treasurer. As per the club by-laws the officers

assume their duties when installed at the annual meeting. Nancy, is the tenth director of the Mid-Atlantic Region. Charles Smith, founder, and serving the first two years as Director. The by-laws set a term limit of two years for the director. Nancy's election and installation represents a bit of history in the making as she is the second Bradfield to be Director. Ten years earlier another Bradfield was installed as Director, Chester Bradfield. Nancy won't have to introduce herself to most folks as she joins the VMCCA national

Board of Directors at the table in Palm Springs. She has been there before as National VMCCA Vice President Activities for the last several years. Both Nancy and Chester are well known around in the Hobby in Virginia for the Car Show and other

activities across the country in VMCCA as there are very few tours or annual meetings that they have not attended - There extensive collection of Studebakers doesn't sit collecting dust as they are seen at regional and national tours and have been very graciously loaned to others who have travelled long distance to tour in our area with us. Needless, to say they are no stranger to owners of vintage Studebakers. (Nancy with their 1932 Studebaker Dictator) As is customary, your editor, asks new officers of the Region to share a little of their personal history and one of their cars for the cover. Their 1935 Studebaker President graces the cover of this issue, pictured in front of their beautiful home near Bridgewater VA. We continue with her story:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Chester and I both had families with Studebakers. My Dad was a Studebaker mechanic. In high school we had a 1950 black bullet nose champion sedan which I learned to drive and got my license. I was raised in the Shenandoah Valley. Chester’s family owned a 1951 champion 4-door sedan, a 1954 Conestoga station wagon, a 1956 President in which he got his license. His family moved all over the country. We met in history class at Madison College (now James Madison University) a girls school with 100 local men day students. He had a 1958 two-tone blue and white Chevy BelAir (the reason we have one today). We were married in 1961 and went to Alexandria, VA where he worked for Price Waterhouse and received his CPA license. I taught high school business until we moved back to Harrisonburg. Our first son, Jeff who is an antique dealer and owns an antique mall with 50 dealers, was born in Alexandria. After we returned to Harrisonburg, Chester started his printing career and I taught a few years. We built a house in Dayton and our daughter, Cindy, and another son, Kevin, was born. I

became a fulltime mom and chauffer. Cindy lives in Fairfax and manages commercial office buildings. Kevin lives in Richmond, hunts on our property and loves to golf. Our children are not married so I get to travel with them. They enjoy helping us with our annual car show in October which we have had for about 20 years. They have some interest in the antique vehicles. Our son finds things at auctions for our car building and our daughter decorates it. They help decide what to buy since the building is full. We are both involved in many non-profit groups, church, and other car clubs when we are not traveling or VMCCA touring. We love seeing parts of the US and meeting people. Chester retired in 2008 from Good Printers after 44 years. STUDEBAKERS for all Occasions and VMCCA Tours Our first antique car a 1935 black Studebaker commander coupe was bought at a car auction in Harrisonburg on Labor Day weekend 1978 (definitely not planned). It was a local car owned by someone we knew. Chester drove it home but the brakes went out before he arrived home. My Dad (a Studebaker mechanic) worked on the brakes and checked it over so we could drive it with the children. A few years later we decided to restore the car since the paint blistered. That was an experience. Different people worked on it, left the area, other took it and lost parts, etc. Chester promised it to our daughter for high school graduation, college graduation and none of that happened. Finally he recruited a couple local guys to finish it. It took about15 years total and today it is a burgundy red color. Before the restoration we found out about the Studebaker International meet which is held yearly. It was in Gettysburg, PA in 1980 so we attended driving the ’35, a 1951 Studebaker black bullet nose convertible which we had acquired and a Pontiac station wagon with the children. After that our family vacation was a week wherever the International Studebaker meet was held. Each year it was a different places over the country. Chester started printing the Studebaker Turning Wheels magazine which he did for 28 years. My dad usually went with us on this annual trip. We attended all of them from 1980 until last year. We also joined our local Greater VA Studebaker Club and a local AACA club . The 1935 is one of 25 Studebakers we presently own. The 1951 convertible mentioned was also bought in 1978 from a collection of Corvairs near Cleveland, Ohio. Chester, our daughter and our German exchange student made the trip to see it on a snowy winter night. They saw the car, bought it and left

it until spring. It has been a favorite in many parades and weddings. We are the third owners. Our third car was a white 1964 Studebaker Avanti. Those were the only three cars we owned while the children were growing up. They enjoyed taking the Avanti to the proms and special events. In 1988 Good Printers purchased our 1940 K10 (1 ton grain truck) with 16,000 original miles in Michigan while attending the International Studebaker meet in South Bend. It uses the same cab as the 37 thru 39 coupe express pickups. In 1999 Chester bought me a 1934 Studebaker street rod. He had already purchased the antique parts from the person that restored the car. We then joined the Valley Cruisers street rod club and NSRA. We have driven the ’34 sedan over 37,000 miles. The Glidden Tour was in the Staunton, VA area in 1999. Chester heard about it and took a friend visiting from Hawaii in our 1935 to where they were staying. We knew a few people helping like Shanholtzers and Stones. In 2000, a Studebaker friend invited him to come to the Glidden Tour in Tucson, AZ to drive one of his cars. This is when we became members of VMCCA. Chester and Nelson Driver flew together to AZ and he met some more people. We then joined the Mid-Atlantic Region. In 2001 we purchased a 1938 red Studebaker coupe express truck which was a basket case out of a WV barn and had it restored. It has been driven on many VMCCA tours. Its first tour was the Glidden Tour at Daytona Beach in 2002. We also attended the Chrome Glidden tour in Salisbury, MD. There we met more people and the Texas group. We took our 1951 Studebaker Convertible. One memory from that tour was coming across the bridge into Cambridge, MD on Rt. 50 when the sky opened up and soaked us. We stopped at the end of the bridge to put the top up only to find out that the car leaked everywhere.

We decided we loved touring so that started the search for another car, which was a 1935 original Studebaker President which has not been restored. We were able to attend several VMCCA national tours and a few Mid-Atlantic tours until Chester sold the printing company and retired in 2008. Since then we are touring as much as possible. Other cars have arrived to enhance our touring and to give Chester something to do.

We are primarily Studebaker but have a few others. We prefer the 30’s Studebaker but added some newer cars for touring. We had to build a “car barn” after he retired since he was storing some of the cars and trucks at the printing plant. With the help of our children the building is now decorated and full. We use it for events and other car clubs to visit.

Charles and Mary Grace Smith Awarded Life-Time Member Emeritus

Eighteen years ago, this past December, Charles and Mary Grace Smith invited a number of vintage car owners to a luncheon to explore the possibility of forming a VMCCA Region. Eleven couples responded and became charter members of the Mid-Atlantic Region. By some car club standards the guiding principle was that less is more – four activities with meetings each year. To the contrary, while many regions broke up into geographically defined chapters, the charter members, officers and members over the years saw the wisdom of their roots and have continued to function as a whole – a regional structure. The desire to tour in our vintage vehicles, enjoy them on the blue highways, is what distinguishes VMCCA from many other clubs. A brief glance at the list of tours taken by the region (See Page 18) will verify not only that we love to tour but also attests to the wisdom of functioning together as a region - taking advantage of all of the diversity in geography, history and demography the Mid-Atlantic Region offers. The blueprint for diverse and outstanding activities established by our founders and charter members lives on in 2017. From the 24 members in 1998, primarily from one state the number of members has grown to from 16 states. Why? The camaraderie, friendly members, welcoming new folks and having fun! All of us who enjoy membership today must heartily thank are founders, charter members, and the support of national for our good fortune. Bill Johnson, national VMCCA VP Membership in 1998 came to Maryland to help get the club organize and secure it as a VMCCA Region. He was awarded honorary member status some years ago. Charles and Mary Grace did not stop with our founding but continued as lead cheerleaders, serving in leadership roles. Charles served two years as Director, conducted the installation of officers every year until recently and Mary Grace served as Secretary for 12 years and was elected as National VMCCA VP Membership in 2003.. Unfortunately, persistent health issue have prevented their active participation in the past year or so. At the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Region Annual Meeting the membership sought to thank Charles and Mary Grace for all they have done for the Club and awarded them the status of Life-Time Member Emeritus.

11

Regardless where a National VMCCA tour was held in 2016 or its theme it was a good bet that a Mid-Atlantic Region member was there, going down the road - and in some cases a whole lot of members. As you read this review you may note a name that is not as familiar as some. We have included our current members in the review even though they may not have joined until after the tour. Apologies in advance if anyone is overlooked. The 2016 National VMCCA Annual Meeting in Punta Gorda, Florida was first up in February and attended by no less than 20 Mid-Atlantic members, The women got together for this shot for the archives. At the Awards Ceremony, Cole Porter, son of Jeremy and Tonya received the Young Enthusiast Award, Jim Talbot the Master Mechanic Award, and Nancy Bradfield the President's Cup. An Award of Recognition went to our Wheels A Rolling. Besides the usual business meetings several points of interest in and around the area were visited. Perhaps the highlight of the tours was the expansive Ringling Bros Circus Museum Campus in Sarasota - a picturesque town on the Bay. The campus of buildings housing a variety of circus memorabilia, a large art gallery, and the Ringling waterfront mansion with extensive gardens.

March 21, the VMCCA Community was in shock as the unbelievable news spread that our President, Mike Derbidge had passed suddenly the night before. We all mourned our loss. April found Mid-Atlantic folks headed south to Tennessee and Alabama for the Mid-Atlantic's Scenic Mountain River Tour organized by the Beardmores and Pearls. Those folks going on the tour formed the pyramid photo for Bob Murray (right). Becky Woodall wrote the follow-up piece for us in the JAS 2016 issue. Highlights of the tour included the "University of the South", Shiloh, Trail of Tears, Helen Keller's birthplace, Fame Recording Studios and "Fun" places such as Coon Dog Cemetery and Rattlesnake Saloon.

The Western National Tour in Show Low Arizona, in May was next on the National Tour Docket. While six couples planned to make the trek, a 60 Plymouth's little bitty generator let David and Dianne down so the final count was ten Mid-Atlantic members - Jim and Marilyn Talbot, Chester and Nancy Bradfield, Gary and Jennie Edem, Carl and Linda Worstell and Bob and Sally Murray. The Western National tours typically offer up a lot of unique and beautiful scenery to frame the vintage cars. This time it was the White Mountains, Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Parks and the Salt River Canyon along with all of that southwestern flavor. Bob Murray captured some of it in these photos along with a couple of our folk's cars. There were over 90 cars on this tour and the Bradfield's Studebaker Hawk and Talbot's Monte Carlo didn't made it into the lens. In early June it was the Sooner State for the Chrome Glidden. This is generally perceived as western country with oil derricks, a long stretch of Route 66, Will Rogers and "home on the range". Several of Bob's pictures bear that out. The write-up in the Bulb Horn gives us the big picture. Mid-Atlantic Region members Murrays, Carl Worstell and Talbots made their way to Stillwater, OK. A few photos of Talbot's touring in their 70 Monte Carlo.

Folks who went to the Chrome Glidden no more than got home and it was time to head out for the Mid-Atlantic Picnic at Casa Birdhill (aka David and Dianne's home). The nice

summer day - brief break in a rainy streak - brought a good number of folks ready to eat and check out the Mopars and Maxwells in the barn along with a lonely Model T and Jaguar, antique Case, IH and MM tractors. Two Mid-Atlantic Maxwells were crossing back forth across the PA and OH state line in early July carrying David and Dianne in their 08 and new members John Littlefield and Susan Lehtold in their 10. It was the VMCCA 1&2 Cylinder National Tour "Slowly Over the Line" Bob and Sally Murray joined the group on the second day and rode the route with David and Dianne - and, Bob took his first driving lesson in a Brass era car in the 08 (photo back page last issue of Bulb Horn). The week's touring included he National Packard Museum, TIP tools in Akron. Antique Engine Park (similar in idea to FL), feeding Camels, Buffalo, Zebra, Ostrich etc at a wild animal farm while riding in specially designed wagon. It is usually an international affair with four Renaults and Peter and Erica McIntyre from London, Ontario, Canada touring in a one cylinder chain drive McIntyre. Ten days after the 1 & 2 in West Middlesex, somewhat more modern cars were touring in western Michigan on the Heritage Tour in and around Byron Corners. New members Kim and Margaret Mudgett. Art Grandle along with our frequent tourers, the Bradfields, Talbots and Murrays were there. Bob Murray caught the action and

some photos of their cars at different points and Art taking a break with his four legged companion. Check out the group picture of our Ohio members cars flanking our Texas members car (Left to Right - Murrays, Talbots, Mudgetts and Grandle) and the Bradfields in their Studebaker Coupe express on the road. The tour included historical sites as well as varied museum's collections of history. To name a few, the Kellogg

House, the newly opened President Ford museum, the unique sculpture garden, the great comprehensive Gilmore museum, and several vintage car collections, etc. Variety is the spice ..... and variety is good way describe the Orphan Car Tour - Orphans at the River, August 21-26 - Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin - in a couple of ways. Having travelled in virtually all regions of Wisconsin, except the central western area, it was easy to form the impression that it the state is relatively flat and punctuated with lakes. The tour changed that perception. In this area of the state it is hilly perhaps depending on one's frame of reference, mountainous and very scenic and owns a whole lot of Mississippi River shoreline and related scenery. Then too, there is a difference in the complement of vintage cars making the tour - there were no Model Ts or As - no Fords, no Chevrolets. It was a different set of vehicles than on many tours. Of the 48 registered vehicles Mercury, Packard, Plymouth (in that order) accounted for 19. DeSoto. Pontiac, Studebaker, Oldsmobile three each, and Rambler, Hudson, Nash, two each and a Daimler, Triumph, Hupmobile, 1912 Reo rounded out the group.

As the summer progressed it also seemed the number of Mid-Atlantic members on national tours increased (perhaps cause more were east of the Mississippi). Here are the members who did the tour - Bob's camera did the work ( he's in the picture). Left to Right

James, Becky Woodall; Kathy, Harry Hartman; Sandy Tierney, Mike Murphy; Sally, Bob Murray; Nancy, Chester Bradfield; Marilyn, Jim Talbot. Descriptions of the tour sites were in the Bulb Horn here are the cars.. Bob caught the cars on the road and at different sites, etc. Top - Hartmans following Woodalls, below L-R top Bradfields, David & Dianne, L-R bottom Murrays, Talbots. For those members going on the Orphan Tour, the whirlwind began. two weeks later the Glidden was in New Hampshire. Marilyn Talbot gave a good accounting of the five days in the Bulb Horn along with Bob Murray's photos. If the photo of the 39 Plymouth with the hood open in the in that issue and a group of "surgeons" around it looked familiar - it should. It becomes a testimony to the camaraderie of the Mid-Atlantic Region. Dianne and I drove from Maryland, doing our usual B&Bs travelling the scenic (especially the Berkshires and Vermont) blue roads. We got to North Conway with a hint that trouble was brewing.. First day out to the lake things were getting a little dicey - loss of power, missing, losing coolant rapidly and it was clear something had to change to continue the tour. The reasoned diagnosis - a blown head gasket. No luck finding a garage and we began looking for a carrier to take it home. Bill Beardmore learned of out issue and said get a head gasket and we'll change it (this after he had already come to the aid of several others). Bill had his tool bag going to work that evening with Jim Cross, Jim Talbot, Ron Lique, James Woodall. (others I may be forgetting) - NAPA had a gasket overnight - an next evening as rain threatened the crew finished the installation THANKS BILL! et.al. Saved the tour and a very good ride back to MD. So, here are the Mid-Atlantic folks who did New Hampshire. Those driving their cars (that we are aware of) are in bold. Carol Allen, 30 Ford; Beardmore's, 31 Ford; Bradfield's, 36 Studebaker; Cameron's, 30 ford; Christ's, 35 Ford; Cross's, 36 Ford; Dagas's, Pasgrs), Edward's, 29 Ford; Emery's, 41 Buick; Fritz's, 41 Ford; Art Grandle, 31 Ford; Gray's, 29 Ford; Guttendorf's, 40 Ford; Johnson's 31 Buick; Keiter's, 22 Oakland; Lique's, 31 Ford; Magiera's, 30 Ford; McFarland's, 29 Ford; Mudgett's, 38 Ford; Murray's, 32 DeSoto; Shanholtzer's, 31 Ford; Smith's (Scott), 38 Chevrolet; Stone's, 29 Ford; Talbot's, 40 Mercury, Turner's (Emery), 31 Ford; Wenger's, 40 Studebaker; Woodall's, 29 Ford; David/Dianne, 39 Plymouth. Sargingers cancelled due to David's health issues. Total - 27 cars of 178 To wrap up this little tale - Ten days later we were doing the Brandywine Valley tour in Exton, PA area and Delaware. A great tour laid out by the Oberender's and Guttendorf's. It went according to plan with 25 cars - with one hitch - David forgot to touch base with Mother Nature and she let lose toward the end of the tour - or perhaps it was planned for a car wash finale A full report was in the last issue of the Wheels A Rolling, A week later it was Hershey - and that report was in the Touring Chronicles in the latter part of December. Our Annual Meeting in Warrenton sort of closed the book on 2016 Mid-Atlantic Region activities.
