Wheat pest calendar

Mary Burrows, David Weaver,

Fabian Menalled

Objective• To develop a wheat pest calendar to assist

producers, county agents, and crop consultants to identify and manage common wheat disease, insect, and weed pests.

Results• 2000 copies printed• Lots of positive feedback• PDF is available on Extn Plant Path

website http://www.msuextension.org/plantpath/

• Next year: Pulse pest calendar funded by NPGA

• Any future interest in barley calendar, or other crop or theme?

Wheat virus variety trials and on-farm fungicide

demonstration trials

Mary Burrows, Luther Talbert, Tom Blake, Alan Dyer, Phil Bruckner, Dan Picard, Joe Broesder, Jesse

Fulbright, Gregg Carlson

Objectives • 1. Evaluate widely planted winter wheat, spring wheat

and barley varieties in Montana for susceptibility to Wheat streak mosaic virus and Triticum mosaic virus

• 2. Evaluate early-season fungicides in wheat in on-farm demonstration trials.

• 3. Disseminate the results of these studies to growers in Montana and throughout the Great Plains region.

Dissemination of this information• Grant term:

– Presentations: four in-state presentations (420 attendees); in June I was invited to Rapid City, SD to speak to the NCERA-184 Cereal Pathology group about wheat viruses.

– Appearances on Montana Ag Live: three appearances (approximately 20,000 viewers per appearance)

– AgAlerts: four agalerts related to viruses and fungicide use in cereals with 406 viewers.

– Publications:• M. Burrows, D. Weaver and M. Menalled. 2011. Common Montana Wheat Pests.

• Upcoming: lots more!

Plans for next year• Continue WSMV variety trials• On-farm demonstration trials for foliar fungicides on

dryland winter wheat– Tillering stage applications– 4 counties (Pondera, Toole, Liberty, Hill), – 2 research stations (Conrad, Havre)– Fall applications at research stations: relationship

to winterkill?– Spring applications all sites: ‘plant health benefit’

in absence of disease pressure• Any other ideas?
