DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE:11th SessionThe Committee encouraged the Peruvian authorities to continue to involve assistanceagencies in providing support for this Park and to pursue the anthropology programmeregarding the resident native population. The Committee also wished to bring the Peruvianauthorities' attention to the need for a rural development project in the buffer zone of thePark.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:This immense 1.5 million-hectare park has successive tiers of vegetation rising from 150 to4,200 metres above sea-level. The tropical forest in the lower tiers contains an unrivalledvariety of animal and plant species. Some 850 species of birds have been identified and rarespecies such as the giant otter and the giant armadillo have found refuge there. Jaguars areoften sighted in the park.
