PAH hosted its 50th Annual Employee Service Awards ceremony
June 13. Held at the elegant Vie venue, the event honored those
employees who have reached milestone years of service, ranging
from five to 40 years.
“Pennsylvania Hospital employees are our greatest asset. Our ability to deliver the best patient care is solely dependent on our staff,” said Denise Mariotti, chief human resources officer of PAH. “It is a privilege to be able to provide a recognition event that honors their years of service to and their dedication to making Pennsylvania Hospital the best place for a patient to be a patient.”

50 Years…It’s a Long Time!Compared to PAH being the nation’s first hospital which just celebrated its 262nd anniversary this past May, celebrating employee service for the past 50 years may not seem like such a long time. However, much has changed medically, technologically, and socially over the past five decades.
Fif ty years ago…There was no Civil rights Act.
No Equal rights Amendment.
No one had ever performed a coronary angioplasty and man had yet to set foot on the surface of the moon.
Fifty years ago at PAH, there was…No Preston Building.
No Cathcart Building.
No Widener Building.
No new wing on the spruce or Hall Mercer Buildings.
No Penn Medicine neuroscience Center on the corner of 9th and Pine
No Farm Journal Building.
No Penn Medicine Washington square.
No Penn Medicine.

Hospital staff and friends gathered in Zubrow auditorium last month for the third-annual relationship-Based Care Awards. The awards were created as a way to recognize professional nursing and inter-disciplinary team members throughout the organization. recipients — chosen by the staff nurse members of the CnO Partnership with the leaders at the Bedside team, Managers and Educators — are exceptional role models from all disciplines selected for exemplifying the tenets of PAH’s professional practice model of relationship-based care: leadership, teamwork, professional nursing practice, patient care delivery, resource-driven practice, and outcomes measurement.

Walk alongside the Penn Medicine community, American Heart Association (AHA) and people of all ages from the Philadelphia area at the 2013 Philadelphia Heart Walk and support the fight against heart disease and stroke.
This year, for the 15th Annual Heart Walk, the Penn Medicine challenge is to raise $135,000 and recruit more employees, patients, friends and families to walk with us than ever before.

PAH diabetes education Center A c h i e v e s A D A R e c o g n i t i o n
It is a matter of fact: diabetes is becoming more prevalent in us. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1980 through 2011, the number of Americans with diagnosed diabetes has more than tripled from 5.6 to 20.9 million. And that’s only the number of persons actually diagnosed. Many may have diabetes or be pre-diabetic and not even know it.
to promote quality education for people with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) endorses the national standards for Diabetes self-Management Education. to support this goal, the ADA Education recognition Program assesses whether applicants meet the national standards for Diabetes self Management Education. Congratulations to Regina N. Linehan RN, MS, CDE, director, and Natalie Gamble MPH, CHES, health educator, of the Pennsylvania Hospital Diabetes Education Center, who have achieved ADA recognition, making PAH one of only 12 ADA recognized diabetes education centers in all of Philadelphia. This recognition lasts until 2017.
The Diabetes Education Center consuls PAH inpatients with diabetes and also works with outpatient health clinics. regina and natalie frequently speak about diabetes care at organizations working with underserved populations in the PAH community.
on June 14, Cardiology Services and the staff of 6 Cathcart sponsored a Heart Walk Bake Sale. “Fellow Heart Walk Team Leader Joanne Ruggiero and I would like to thank everyone for their extraordinary support and the generous donations we received for the Heart Walk Bake Sale. In just three hours, we raised a whopping $900 for the American Heart Association to assist with life-saving research and education,” said danielle Heffner, MHA, BBA, director of Cardiology Services. “The generosity and compassion of our staff and employees is what makes Pennsylvania Hospital such a special place!”

Fifty years ago, instead of physician offices and practices, the 301 south 8th street side of the Duncan Building was the student nurses residence. If male staff were to enter the building, they had to open the door and yell in, “Man on the floor!” before they could enter.
Fifty years ago, there was no such thing as a gamma Knife or Cyber Knife or deep brain stimulation — three modern medical technologies synonymous with PAH today. There were no Ct scans or MrIs or even automatic blood pressure machines. There were no cell phones or PCs and the only computer the hospital had was in the Hub Building — where Widener now stands. A one floor building dedicated to housing the single, main frame computer of the hospital.

PAH’S 1st BReAST feedInG CHAMPIonC Ongr Atul AtIOns to Cristie Giordano, a clinical nurse 2 rn on 4 & 5 Preston, who is the recipient of PAH’s first Breast Feeding Champion of the Month Award. This monthly recognition award was initiated by the 4/5 Preston unit Council to recognize excellence in breast feeding support for our patients. Cristie was nominated by her peers for her clinical excellence and support of the “ten steps to successful Breastfeeding” as established by the united nations Children’s Fund (unICEF) and the World Health Organization Baby-Friendly Hospital Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. PAH officially kicked off its baby-friendly journey in the fall of 2012 to help significantly improve breastfeeding rates in the Philadelphia region.
