INTRODUCTION• WhatsApp was founded in 24th Feb, 2009 by US citizens by Brian Acton
and Jan Koum.• WhatsApp Inc. is based in Mountain View, California, United States. • It was acquired by Facebook on February 19, 2014 for approximately 19.3
billion dollar.• From 2015, it was officially made available for PCs through a web client
under the name WhatsApp web. • From 10th may 2016 WhatsApp is also available for windows operating
system.• WhatsApp is used in more than 109 countries . In India over 70 million
people use the messaging service.
• WhatsApp is a cross platform proprietary encrypted instant messaging app for smartphones.• One can send text messages, images, audios, videos, documents and
user location to a receiver or group of receivers.• WhatsApp privacy and personalization settings add to its appeal.• End to end encryption.
HOW IT WORKS AND TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THIS
• WhatsApp uses a customized version of Open standard Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP).• Upon installation, it generates account for every user using one's
phone number as the username. • WhatsApp software automatically compares all the phone numbers
from the device's address book with its main database of WhatsApp users to automatically add contacts to the user's WhatsApp contact list.
WHAT IS EXTENDIBLE MESSAGING AND PRESENCE PROTOCOL (XMPP)?
• The Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an application profile of the Extensible Mark-up Language (XML).
X — extensible• XMPP has been designed to grow and accommodate changes.M — Messaging• XMPP has been designed to send all messages in real-time using a very
efficient push mechanism.• Existing web based mechanisms often make many unnecessary requests
introducing network load, and are not real-time.P — Protocol• XMPP is a protocol; a set of standards that allows systems to talk to each other. P — Presence• The presence indicator tells the servers that you are online / offline / busy.

MANAGERIAL ISSUES• Building a Broadcast List, as each recipient must add marketer’s
number to his/her contacts to receive messages.• Not more than 250 contacts is allowed in broadcast list.• Risk of crashing whatsApp when text message is more than 7mb.
