What's Up Willowville?
Dear Willowville Parents and Students,
Your children are AMAZING! Over the last several weeks, I have observed so much
compassion, reassurance, hard work and determination from all of our grade levels.
Thank you for the support you have provided all year by bringing your child to school each
day, encouraging them to always do their best, providing inspiring words and sending in treats
for the class.
We are headed into the home stretch with a lot of exciting activities for the students. Among
those events are welcoming our new kindergarten students for next school year, Right to Read
week, Time Capsule Opening, COSI on Wheels, field day for each grade, and the Memorial
Day Parade. We are in great need of volunteers, especially for two very exciting events, COSI
and the Memorial Day Parade. There are other opportunities to volunteer in the month of May.
Please contact Mrs. Prewitt if you are able to help.
5th Grade Parents…Have you heard about the reorganization of the middle schools? The
middle schools will go back to the model of teaming. This means that each set of 100 – 120
students will be grouped with four core teachers in English, mathematics, science, and social
studies. Our students will hear more when they visit the middle school on May 21st. Please see
inside our newsletter or check the website for more information.
“Right to Read” week is the week of May 6th. Several grade levels will enjoy reading a novel/
book each day, sharing their reading books with others, comparing books and movies or
creating an Animoto video to promote reading. There are many more small activities planned
for the students to enjoy. I would encourage you to listen to your child read, read with your
child or read to your child every day; what a wonderful way to spend quality time! Also this
week is DIBELS testing for each grade level. This ties nicely with our Right to Read week as
students show how fluently and accurately they can read.
“Blast into Kindergarten” will be Friday, May 17th at noon. Please encourage your neighbors
who will have a child attending kindergarten next school year to attend this very informative
session even if they have not enrolled at this time.
Please continue to check your child’s Friday folder for information and academic progress.
We have a lot of exciting events planned for the end of the school year and look forward to
your continued support!
Sincerely,
Michelle Kennedy

MIDDLE SCHOOL REORGANIZTION
West Clermont's Board of Education was presented a plan to reorganize both Amelia and Glen Este Middle
Schools for the 2013-14 school year. Dr. Keith Kline, Superintendent, suggested that "structural changes to our middle
school day are necessary in order to provide our students with the support and academic rigor they deserve."
After listening to teachers and staff, both middle schools will return to more of a true middle school model in 2013-14.
Students will be organized into teams of 110-120 students who will work directly with four core area staff members
(Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies). In addition, time in each core subject area will expand from 50
minutes per day to 60 minutes per day starting in August. All students will have access to academic intervention
focused on Language Arts and Math. Likewise, students will have access to enrichment and electives of their choosing.
There will need to be some staffing adjustments as the district moves into the new school year as well. Specific steps
have been taken to assure students have the same access to teachers and the same course offerings regardless of
which middle school they attend.
The district is also currently interviewing internal candidates for the position of principal at both sites. "Instructional
leadership is key to every schools' success", Kline indicated. "If we do not find the right people inside our organization,
we will search outside until the best candidates are found. We owe that to our students and staff." The District plans
to name new Middle School Principals later this spring.
This shift in the structure of our middle school day will allow our students and staff to get to know each other better,
gain a better handle on student behavior and provide the academic structure necessary to help students achieve. While
there is much work yet to be done, this is a terrific first step in taking West Clermont's middle schools to the next
level.
Fourth grade students at Willowville Elementary entered the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio Child of Appalachia Writing Contest. Students had to write about an invention that would be helpful to society. We would like to congratulate Jayden Kohus for winning the contest for all 4th grade students in Clermont County. We would also like to thank The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio and The Duke Energy Foundation for sponsoring this event in providing two tickets to COSI, a gas card and an iPad for classroom use.
Congratulations Jayden Kohus!
