QUICK TIPS FOR ORGANIZING10 Steps to Painless Organizing

Bring your calendar up to date with appointments, deadlines, special 1. occasions and any other information to keep you on track. Apply this step to family, personal and business calendars.

Handle paperwork as quickly and brutally as possible, saving only 2. those necessary for tax deductions, proof of purchase or liability and, of course, selective keepsakes.

Spend a few minutes each evening planning the next day’s activities, 3. appointments, deadlines, errands, etc. Consolidate activities to conserve energy and time and to insure completion.

Keep a small notebook handy for thoughts of future activities or ideas 4. to incorporate later into your goals and calendar. Eliminate notes on scraps of paper only to waste time later searching for them.

Start an ongoing grocery list, or photocopy the store’s directory to circle 5. needed items for the next weekly shopping day, eliminating expensive and time wasting stops at the market for “a few items.”

Plan to organize one area of your life a week...large or small. Start with 6. a drawer or two or the car or a stack of old magazines. Then celebrate each accomplishment with a fun activity. The regular progress will be an encouragement and quite motivating.

Practice delegating to those around you, hiring help as needed for those 7. tasks others could manage, creating time for your work or leisure. A sign of a good manager is one who is able to delegate.

Deal with the mail on a daily basis to stay on top of activities, bills, and 8. obligations and to eliminate those dreaded stacks and piles later.

Keep a list of emergency information numbers in an address book, 9. Rolodex or business card holder, for your use and others on the job and at home. Some would include, plumber, school, neighbor, doctor, etc.

Establish a habit of tidying your work areas daily or after each project to 10. mark a completion and to create an inviting environment for your return. Cleaning off or reorganizing a desk top or eliminating a room of daily clutter are a couple examples.

Organization isn’t difficult…..it just takes planning.

cookin’ cornerCorn Season

Fresh corn is starting to appear in tall piles at the grocery stores and Farmer’s Markets – that means summer it here! With all the talk about high-fructose corn syrup and the prevalence of corn in our diet, corn has gotten a bad rap in the last couple years. But while it’s true we get far too many corn-related products in our diet, 99% of that comes in the form of processed foods. Eating fresh corn from the cob is not only one of the great joys of summer but will actually give you a ton of nutrients. TASTE & TEXTURE – Fresh corn is one of those rare veggies that delivers a crunchy and a creamy texture at the same time. Particularly when eaten raw, the satisfying snap of fresh corn is followed by the creamy, sweet center of the kernel. Corn is also such a versatile veggies – great raw, steamed, sautéed or grilled. NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS – Did you know 1 cup of corn ker-nels has 25% of your daily val-ue of Vitamin B1? That’s the Vitamin B that’s good for your memory and brain health, so eat up! It’s also high in folate and vi-tamin C and is a great way to increase your dietary fiber. COOKING TIP – It’s hard to pick just one favorite way to use this ver-satile veggie. Certainly one of the most popular ways to eat this sum-mer beauty is grilled. While you can grill it with or without the husk, we like it best with the husked removed, brushed with a little olive oil and grilled until some of the kernels pick up that lovely grilled color and flavor. Nothing more than a sprinkle of salt and pepper is needed! Editor’s Note: Thank you to our Cookin’ Corner writer, Melanie Barsuk from Simple Gourmet. family friendly travelKauai - The Garden Island

Most people when they think of the Hawaiian Islands they immediately think Oahu or Maui. Both of these beautiful islands have so much to offer and are a must see but if you really want to experience the true Hawaiian spirit think Kauai.

Kauai is nicknamed the The Garden Island for its beautiful green foliage and landscape, a touch of paradise. The movie Jurassic Park was filmed there and Hollywood still comes calling when they need a tropical untouched paradise. Kauai is filled with exciting adventures for families. We loved the Kayak trips in Hanalei Bay on the north side of the island and if your family is adventurous try to hike the Napali Coast a four mile jaunt up and down a rugged coastline to a beautiful beach below, another two miles and you’re in the midst of a thunderous waterfall. Captain Andy’s Zodiac Boat tour of the Napali Coast by sea, fishing, snorkeling and scuba are all available as well.

The lodging on Kauai ranges from the 5 star hotels like the Grand Hyatt or local condos for rent for that relaxing, local feel. Shopping and dining are limitless, with Delta Airlines and others offering direct service from LAX.

If you would like a different “true” Hawaiian Family vacation please consider Kauai and Travelstore! Mahalo!

modern day ms. mannersMuseum Manners

Several weeks ago I found myself with some free time thus I decided to enjoy a few of our local museums. While I thoroughly enjoyed many of the exhibits and tours, I did notice that many children from the local school groups also in attendance were not prepared with proper guidelines for their visit. Whether you are taking your family alone or your children are touring with a group, please address the following rules prior to the trip.

When planning your trip to a Museum make sure you go at a good time for your • child, not what is a good time for you. Ex. Don’t go at meltdown time...Go after a nap... Go after they have eaten.

Know the Museum rules for where you are visiting. Some prohibit photography, • food, etc. in certain areas.

Go over your rules and expectations for visiting a Museum with your child. Small • children might need to be reminded several times. Remember that short attention span! If they do well in one area, be sure to praise them for good behavior. Be vigilant in watching and being responsible for your child while you are there.

Never touch the artwork. Keep your hands to yourself; touching objects can damage them.

Never run, gallop, skip, jump, etc. in the galleries.

Stay together with the guide and the group during the visit.

Use quiet voices in a respectful volume and tone. This applies to adults too!

Save the snacks to enjoy outside on a warm day or on your car ride home. Also, no chewing gum.

Photography of objects is limited and subject to the approval of the Museum staff.

Please use your cell phone outside of the Museum. Editor’s Note: Thank you to our writer, Constance Hoffman of Learn Social Graces. Get more information about Constance atwww.LearnSocialGraces.com or call (310) 210-6103.
