We maken ons eigen businessplan, ontwerpen papiergeld en ruilen onze talenten op de ABC-beurs. Kom luisteren naar mythologische verhalen, riskeer je zakgeld in het ABC-Casino en ga dan mee zwemmen in het geldpakhuis van Dagobert Duck…

WhAt (the hell) Is the MAtter WIth MONey?

Wat is de ware aard van geld? Waar komt het vandaan? Waar gaat het naartoe? Is dit echt een simpele manier van ruilen? en indien niet: wat kan het dan nog zijn? Komt geld onze samenleving ten goede? Of is het omgekeerd? Gaat het – uit ein de-lijk – alléén maar om geld? hoe gaan wij zelf om met (en zonder) geld? Over welke ‘waarden’ hebben we het eigenlijk? en is Geld de enig denk-bare valuta?

Is er een manier om ons dit ‘Globale Monster systeem’ opnieuw toe te eigenen of het te herdenken?

Gedurende het drie dagen durende project What’s the Matter With Money lichten diverse international podium-kunstenaars en enkele befaamde experten hun standpunt toe, formu-leren mogelijke antwoorden voor en stellen nieuwe brandende vragen over dit zinderende onderwerp.

Als iemand jou een gratis fles douche­gel of een paar ovenwanten zou aanbieden, of – zomaar, voor niets – gratis meubilair, zou jij dat dan aan-nemen? In CMMN SNS PRJCT ver-welkomen de Argentijnse Laura Kalauz en de Zwitserse Martin schick het publiek in hun ondergoed terwijl ze allerlei spullen gratis uitdelen. De openingsscène is het startpunt van een slim spel met sociale mechanis-men die we al lang niet meer in vraag stellen. Maar wat als we zouden voor-bijgaan aan de logica van econo-mische winst? Wat als het theater een arena zou worden van vrije handel en avontuur, een ruimte tussen voyeur isme en participatie, een ode aan onvolledigheid? Dit symposium is het resultaat van een week workshop over ‘kunst als valuta’ (voorafgaand aan deze drie dagen) en omvat diverse vormen van discussie, waaronder een teDx salon i.s.m. howest en een ronde-tafelgesprek. en tussendoor is er een Gek spel voor wie dat wil.

What is the real nature of money? Where does it come from? Where does it go to? Is it really a simple tool of exchange? And if not, what else can it be? Is money working for the benefit of society? Or is it rather the other way around? Is it just about money, after all? how are we dealing, in our everyday life, with (and without) money? What values are we actually talking about? And is Money the only possible currency?

Can we re-appropriate and re-think the “Global Monster system”?

During the three day project What’s the Matter With Money, various international performance artists and a number of renowned experts expose their point of view, propose possible answers and raise new burning questions on this mesmerizing topic.

Overall, and to put it short, Defoort would want this reading to have the following qualities: – be rigorous – clear – a little subversive – and of course a little touching … although it is clear that there is little common ground between these four characteristics.

Using old science-Fiction thrillers and unseen video material, Money: It Came From Outer Space delivers the cruel proof: money is an alien!
