What is HALS Family Learning? It is free learning for parents andcarers in schools and children’s centres. Some crèche places may beavailable for parents with pre-school children.

As mums, dads, granddads, grandmas, aunties, uncles and carers, you

are your child’s most important teachers. We also know you may havevery different educational backgrounds. You may have left school withno qualifications, have forgotten skills learnt at school or would like tosimply refresh your knowledge.

You may have also realised that schools teach children in verydifferent ways now from when you were at school. Family Learning willintroduce you to the school curriculum so that you can support yourchild without confusing him or her with different methods you may

know.

Did you hate maths at school? But did you know that maths iseverywhere, when you get up and get the children ready for school,go shopping or plan a trip? You and your children are using maths.Maths for children is all about playing ‘counting on’, ‘halving’,‘doubling’ and ‘sharing’. English is about creating stories, dressing upand acting out different roles. There are plenty of everyday activitiesand games we can show you to make it ‘fun’ for you and your children

to learn. You could also learn computer skills along the way!

If English is not you first language, don’t worry; we can help youdevelop your skills on Family Language courses which will help yousupport your child. If you don’t have a qualification in English ormaths you may get one with us at the same time!

Book raises curtain on Haringey’s cinema past

By Stephen Moore, Tottenham, Wood Greenand Edmonton Journal. Thursday, 30December

(centre), drops by to celebrate the launch of a

new book delving into the history of cinemas

Jeremy Buck (left) is pictured with Hornsey

Historical Society chairman Keith Fawkes-Underwood (right).

The 140-page book, published by the Hornsey Historical Society, is also dotted

with previously unpublished photos and anecdotes from patrons and former

staff. David Winskill, Liberal Democrat councillor for Crouch End and historyenthusiast, who reviews the book on this website, said it “offers a thumbnail

pictures. Ian Christie, of the British Film Institute, was at the launch party at the
