As the Yellowpoint Christmas Spec-tacular Producer and Creator Katy Bowen-Roberts heads into her ninth season, she took a moment with us to reflect on the production and its jour-ney thus far.

“It feels like only yesterday that I was sit-ting cozied up by a wood burning fire with a pint of bitter, a few creative artistic friends, a napkin and pen and an outpouring of ideas that would soon become a seed for the Yel-lowpoint Christmas Spectacular”. In a small country village outside Norfolk, England, Katy found herself dreaming up this sing-ing and dancing extravaganza. Little did she know then that nine years later, the show would be welcoming almost six thousand people through its doors annually, that it would be known for it’s Christmas spirit, it’s talent, it’s energy, and it’s success.

The Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular Heads into its’ Ninth Season!

Katy’s work on this show begins in Febru-ary. On the floor in her living room, she spreads out hundreds of musical scores, books and CD’s in front of her and be-gins to piece together the show. Within a month, it has started to take shape and James Mark, Musical Arranger, comes onto the scene. After hours of discussion, the team is ready to get started. James sets to work arranging the music and over 60 pieces will be found in this year’s score. Katy sets to work booking theatres, hiring the creative team, advertising and managing auditions, creating contracts, designing the marketing campaign, con-tacting past and future audience mem-bers and ordering costumes. “Not a day goes by throughout the year that I don’t think about this show. Some weeks I put in just a few hours. Others, the hours are endless and full of big decisions and excit-ing opportunities. There is always some-thing to work on”, says Katy.

The show has grown over the past nine years into a production that is unique and has become a special holiday tradition for thousands of people annually across cen-tral Vancouver Island. This year’s sing-ing and dancing spectacular includes hits by the Beach Boys, a Rock of Ages medley, Bobby Darrin songs, songs from Grease and Moulin Rouge, a Canadiana

set as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites.

week rehearsal period in preparation for opening night. “It takes a year of plan-ning to bring this show to the stage but it’s worth every minute” says creator, Katy. “Audiences leave buzzing night af-ter night and when I hear them cry, ‘my Christmas has officially begun’ I know that we have succeeded.” The show is fast moving and colorful with dazzling costumes, lights and sequins. It takes you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance from rock & roll to Broadway, jazz and classical, all interwoven with touching readings and stories, including an audience sing-along, a Christmas Quiz and youthful energy and talent to take you on a journey to an-other world.

There are 17 performances in three dif-ferent venues (The Cedar Community Hall, The Port Theatre and the Sid Wil-liams Theatre) running from December 4th – December 20th. When I first met with Judy, her first words to me were, “I know you can’t help me but I’ve tried ev-erywhere else and you are my last hope.”

She went on to tell me that she had been turned down by her bank for a consolidation loan and had been told by two Trustee’s that she could not settle her debt either in a Bankruptcy or a Consumer Pro-posal, as she had equity in a home that she owned with her two sisters in Alberta.

She was stuck, as she could not sell the house that her sisters lived in nor could she mortgage it due to her poor credit and lack of employment. (She was living on the grace of friends, couch surfing).

In Alberta, Judy is a Certified Healthcare Practi-tioner. This certificate did not allow her to work in B.C. without spending money that she did not have, on getting her B.C. Certificate. Judy was cleaning homes to make ends meet.

She is estranged from her sisters in Alberta, as she moved to B.C. with a man she was not married to and in their culture, this is unacceptable. Over time, the relationship fell apart and Judy found her-self alone in B.C. with two sisters in Alberta that barely spoke with her.

Her situation seemed hopeless. She had approxi-mately sixty thousand dollars in credit card debt, no home, low paying job and no family to help her.

Judy had suffered two nervous breakdowns in the past couple of years due to her stress. When I met her she was in a very fragile state.

As I spent time interviewing Judy, she told me that over the years she had borrowed from her sisters on her portion of the equity in the house in Alberta. I began to wonder how much equity there actually was that she was still entitled to. After speaking with her sister I was able to discover that, in fact, there was only about ten thousand dollars left of her portion of the equity. The sisters had carefully kept records of the money they had paid to Judy over the years.

With the help of a lawyer in Edmonton, we were able to offer the sisters Judy’s remaining portion of equi-ty in their home for ten thousand dollars in exchange for Judy’s name being removed from the title.

No longer owning an asset in Alberta and with ten thousand to work with, we were able to structure a lump sum settlement to all of her creditors, which was ultimately accepted at nine cents on the dollar.

Judy is now debt free. Her health has improved tre-mendously. She calls me and emails me on a regu-lar basis to thank me for ‘saving her life.’ She has also referred clients to me.

The Family Road Trip It was sort of a rite of passage, back in the day, to pack up the car (and pack everyone in it…comfort be damned) and head out on the road. Ahhhhh: the family road trip; a not-so modern day test of the ties that bind. Now that I mention it…is the family road trip something families even do anymore? Or did too many families break apart because of the road trip that is sort of died on the vine? Maybe it was more of a “70’s” thing. The kind of “well we can…so we should” type of vacation that our parents’ generation came up with. Whatever the case may be if you’re pondering a big cross-country, or even trans-continental, car trip with the family you may want to at least take the vehicle in for an inspection prior to heading out. A quick pre-trip check-up can, mostly, rule-out any major car issues from threatening to derail your big adventure. Your local mechanic will be able to perform a full inspection of all the major systems and advise you on what needs doing and what to keep an eye on. This kind of inspection can, hopefully, help you avoid having any traumatizing road-trip breakdowns like the kind that happened to my family when I was a kid.

When I was around the tender and highly impressionable age of 9 or so, my family, all 5 of us, took the old green non-air conditioned,

Wouldn’t you know it the alternator (or something like that I mean ‘c’mon’ I was 9 OK I don’t know what it was…) gave out literally in the middle of nowhere. Anyway it may as well have been the last stop before the end of the earth and, go figure, the big breakdown happened at the end of the working day on a Friday. It seemed to us like “nobody but nobody” wanted to go the extra mile for a bunch Swedish-car-driving Canadian folk. This was pre-Glasnost and there was no Perestroika for us communist-Canucks on that day. The head mechanic took one gander at that Swedish mess of a “Grande Luxe” and he just walked away shaking his head. I think I even heard a snicker. If only we’d have taken the car in to be checked out by a good Canadian mechanic prior to heading out on the road….but no. So there we were in “one-horse-central” standing all alone quietly realizing the gravity of our situation each of us silently wondering what the heck we were going to do…and that’s just about the time the heavy black clouds rolled in and the first drops of rain started to fall.

It’s that magical time of year again!

Downtown Duncan’s annual Christmas Kick-off takes place this year on Friday, November 27th from 5:30pm – 8:30pm.

Be there to welcome Santa as he arrives by fire truck and be sure to visit him in his Santa Station under the big red tent. Carols will be sung and played by community choirs, community bands, wandering carolers and the Smiley Family Band will be entertaining the crowd as well. Chestnuts will be roasting and lights will be sparkling from the community Christmas trees decorated by local businesses and service groups. Spread Christmas cheer and laughter as you hitch a hayride provided by Providence Farm, then treat yourself to a hot beverage and bite to eat from one or two of our fabulous downtown restaurants or the concessions set up for the evening by various local non-profit organizations. At 8:00pm the evening’s finale begins as fireworks light up the sky from the roof of City Hall.

Christmas Kick-off is always a special evening as the community gathers downtown in a festive spirit to welcome in the holiday season. Our little downtown sparkles with lights and shops stay open late to warmly welcome you in from the cold. The charm of Downtown Duncan truly shines on this special night.
