David BrettellPresident

Dear Members,

Thank you for the nearly 500 responses you gave to the recent swimming pool options survey. I see this level of participation to be a healthy sign of you wanting to be involved in the important decisions we need to make, and I encourage you all to continue in the same way as we make other decisions going forward.

As for the swimming pool survey, about 63% of your responses were in favour of retaining the pool’s deep end and diving board, and I confirm that we will accordingly proceed with this option. A liner will be placed inside the existing frame of the pool with the work commencing this December when the pool closes for the winter, with a view to this and other necessary pool remedial work being completed in time for its re-opening in spring 2018.

Also on the swimming topic, I encourage our young boys and girls to participate in the annual Swimming Gala scheduled for mid-August. This year we are looking at the formation of teams of youngsters from the various Sports Sections and from other groupings, and our Section Representatives will be co-ordinating with our sports management team in preparation for this event. So, please arrange for your children to sign up.

There have been two changes in the composition of your General Committee following the recent AGMs of the Football and Hockey Sections. We have welcomed two handsome men to the GC, Luca Merlone as Football Representative and Alfonso Cordero as Hockey Representative. I wish to commend the two equally fine-looking men who have each passed on the baton to them, Shyam Nainani and Allah Dad, for their respective service not only to the Football and Hockey Sections, but also to the Club as a whole. Both have responded very well to the issues that inevitably arise from time to time, and have been valuable members of the GC. I am confident that Luca and Alfonso, having each successfully grasped the baton, will follow the same path.

This month an event will be staged for the first time at a members’ club in Hong Kong, here at KCC, namely the 12th East Asian Squash Championships. The round robin 5 member team format over three days from 7th to 9th July will involve men and women players from Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Macau and Hong Kong, including three of our Junior Subscribers Leo Au, Chris Lo and Vanessa Chu representing HK. I am grateful to Hong Kong Squash, Aaron Yip and his Committee, and our sports management team, for making and carrying out the arrangements for this event. On your behalf I also extend a warm welcome to all the participants, particularly those from overseas, and I trust that they will enjoy their experience here both of the competition and socializing with us.

Also later this month, four football teams from the English Premier League will be playing a series of matches in Hong Kong, and we are very privileged to be able to welcome Crystal Palace FC to train at KCC during their stay. Their players will be invited to conduct some training for our junior players, with details to be given in due course. Again, on your behalf I wish them a warm welcome – by complete coincidence they are the team which I support.

Let us hope for some drier weather in July now that the school holidays are in full swing, and please enjoy all of our facilities during the summer months.

With my best wishes, David BrettellPresident

GM's Column

Dear Members,Kids will be kids – We all realize that kids are kids but they don’t realize how dangerous it can be if they run around in a food & beverage outlet. Serving staff are carrying hot food & beverages and it is very easy for a child to bump into a serving staff and have something hot spilled on them. I ask all parents to please remember this when you are in the club with your children…if they become “frisky” please take them outside to the children’s outdoor play area.

East Asia Squash Championship. This event will take place here at KCC from Thursday July 6th – Sunday July 9th. There will be many highly ranked squash players here during this time so do come down and watch the athletes show you how squash is to be played!

Dim Sum on the last Wednesday of each month. For the past year we have secured the services of a Dim Sum chef and have been serving up a delicious Dim Sum buffet lunch on the last Wednesday of every month. We will remind you all in the usual ways so you won’t have to remember!

Premiere League Football Team Crystal Palace. We have the pleasure to host Crystal Palace, one of the Premiere League teams in Hong Kong for the Premiere League Asia Trophy tournament. The four team knockout will be played on July 19th and 22nd at the HK Stadium. The team will use our grounds as a practice field during their time here which will be from July 16th to Sunday July 23rd. As part of their agreement Crystal Palace will hold a junior clinic for our KCC junior footballers.

The car park will remain open for Members to retrieve their cars. If Typhoon Signal No. 8 is lowered before 6 pm the Club will reopen with limited service and outlets.

3.3 If Typhoon Signal No.8 is lowered between 7 am and 6 pm,the Club will open two hours after No.8 is lowered and resume with limited operations until normal service can be resumed. However, if it is lowered after 6 pm, the Club will remain closed until 7 am the following day.

The team was one win away from a finals spot, however the squad now had some serious injury concerns with Darrell Sellers at the dentist due to a breakfast incident that got the better of him, and a few niggles that were ready to flare up. KCC again batted first against a fired up All Friends Club (AFC), who KCC got the better of in the group stages. With some short ball tactics AFC kept the KCC openers quiet, having KCC 20/2 off the first three overs, however skipper Burke managed a knock of 18*. But more impressive were the extras from AFC, which totalled 28 and kept KCC in the game as they reached 66/2. KCC were never really in trouble as they defended the total in style, with only 25 runs coming from the final three overs of the match.

KCC had now booked a place in the bowl final, however they were down to four players with Sellers out (Tooth), Vaughan pulled a hamstring as well as copping a massive blow to the arm from his opening partner Collins, and Tim Cutler wore a short-pitched delivery to the cheek which will keep him to a light diet over the coming days.

KCC's skipper lost the toss and they were sent in, Vaughan and Cutler showing the true KCC spirit by playing with genuine injuries. But again, this was a final and a chance to bring some silverware back to KCC.

A disappointing 48/3 was well below par, with only Burke making double figures. Mariners Cricket Club (Singapore) were an impressive outfit and had no real troubles in chasing down the total to win the bowl final, as they reached the target with 7 balls remaining.

KCC f i n i s h e d a n i m p r e s s i v e 10th overall and played in the bowl final – a huge improvement on the last time KCC played in the same tournament, in 2015. Big thanks must go to Sandeep and everyone at Spirits Cricket Club for organising an enjoyable weekend.

I would also like to share my condolences and wishes to Amar Hanspal's family and friends. He was the heartbeat of this tournament for a number of years, and a great friend to many in cricketing circles throughout Asia and afar. Amar sadly passed away earlier this year, just after visiting Hong Kong, where he was arranging a Spirits tour to Hong Kong Cricket Club and KCC.

KCC Veterans make Singapore Sixes FinalBy Charlie Burke – Director of Cricket

The Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC) veterans (over 35s) travelled to Singapore, to compete in the Denis Meyer-Amar Hanspal International Veterans Sixes, on 3rd and 4 June at the Ceylon Sports Club.

KCC were placed in group A and had an early start on day one, against the Spirited Spartans from Perth, Western Australia. Captain and Director of Cricket Charlie Burke won the toss and elected to bat first in very humid conditions. KCC got off to a flyer thanks largely to Matt Collins who smashed a 10-ball 28* before having to retire (the retirement score is 25). Simon Millington supported his opening partner with a fine 18*, which helped KCC get to a competitive score of 67/0 off the allotted 5 overs.

An impressive effort with the ball, with four bowlers going at a run a ball or less, kept the Spirited Spartans to 31/0 – and gave KCC the dream start.

Skipper Burke again won the toss in game two and elected to bat. The All Friends Club (Philippines) bowled tightly and restricted KCC to 42/1. KCC would require a huge effort in the field and with the ball. Vaughan English and Matt Collins took the weathered rock and both bowled tightly and collected two crucial wickets.

AFC required only 9 runs from the final over, and the ‘ice man’ Leigh Stewart bowled the perfect last over to give KCC the win by 2 runs, which had KCC sitting pretty on top of pool A.

The final group match was not the best performance of the weekend, as KCC lost. Batting first, KCC were restricted to 54/0, with English smashing 27* off 10 balls and retiring, however it wasn’t enough as Kelawar CC (Malaysia) went on to win with 5 balls to spare.

KCC narrowly missed out on net run rate (NRR) and finished one spot out of the top group playing for the shield. Grouped against some tough opposition, KCC would need to win 3 straight matches to take home some silverware. KCC were in the field in the knockout match against Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Hammers. The Hammers batted well and made an impressive 67/0. KCC chased the total in superb fashion, English smashing another impressive retirement score of 32* including 4 huge sixes, and well supported by Collins 24* to get KCC home with 5 balls to spare – with Simon Millington finding the rope at deep square in the most impressive display from the squad over the weekend.

KCC Hockey Section was proud to host the 52nd Anniversary of KCC vs. RBSC Interport on 12 May. RBSC travelled to Hong Kong to play at King’s Park, for another competitive and fun annual match. KCC won the match (3:1) and then a reception was held back at KCC.

As always, the festivities afterwards at the club were jolly. As the winners, KCC had to skull out of the winner’s trophy, and Fahim made the team proud! The VIPs didn’t miss out though, including David Brettell, who was in fine form and helped to also support the hockey section…. Needless to say, the reception continued on late into the night!

A special thanks to our organisers: AD Dad, Iqbal Khan and Popeye. And thanks to RBSC, our supporters and the KCC F&B team.

KCC U6, U7, U8, U9, U10, U11 & U12 Junior Boys

This tournament is the start of the Citi International Soccer 7s, which culminates with the main Adults Tournament at the HKFC on the last weekend of May. KCC enters a team to play alongside teams of professional players from all over the globe. One day, our fantastic junior players may be rubbing shoulders with the great of the game as well.

KCC U6 Boys Our 2011-born players rocked up at the HKFC hockey field in anticipation of their first ever proper tournament. Coach James was optimistic going into the tournament, but the boys came up against tough opposition, losing to Cantera, HKFC and APSS. The team managed to get a point against YSA with a 1:1 draw and this put them through to the Shield. They managed another 1:1 draw, this time against HKFC 2, but they then experienced cruel fate and exited via the dreaded penalties. Coach James was thrilled with the players' efforts and the amount they learned. Player of the tournament Elton Chan stood out, and contributed with three goals.

KCC U7 Boys The 2010-born players also headed to HKFC for their first ever tournament. In the end it proved a steep learning curve, as every game ended in defeat, without the scoreboard being troubled by them. Coach Lukalu was still not disappointed though, as the players learnt a lot about the game and he is sure they will be back stronger next season.

KKCC U8 Boys Arguably KCC’s strongest youth team went into the tournament with high expectations. After flying out of the blocks in the 1st game, going 2:0 up they surrendered the lead to draw 2:2 with ASA. Cai McGunnigle then nicked the only goal of the game in a 1:0 win over APSS, and from there, the boys kicked into overdrive, winning 5:0 and 4:0 against ACC and YSA, respectively. A dull 0:0 draw against HKFC secured another point and the KCC were into

the Cup quarter finals. CSSHK lay in wait but were taken out by another Cai McGunnigle goal, and it was into the semi-finals. Academy now stood between KCC and a shot at Cup glory. Predictably, Cai McGunnigle netted a fine goal, his 36th of the season, and Nathan Daniel helped secure a 2:0 win. The final was a tense affair, against APSS 1, and it was decided by a solitary goal, this time though it was APSS who netted, meaning the KCC had to settle for Cup runners-up, still a great effort.

KCC U9 Boys After a strong season pushing for a place in the Premiership, the U9s faced tough opposition in their first game. A goal from William Holt was not enough to stop the tournament starting with a defeat to HKD. Coach Chris rallied his troops and the boys produced a fine performance against Sun, topped off with 2 goals from Benji Miles in a 2:0 win. The KCC couldn’t build on this though. and HKFC 3 were able to grind out a 0:0 draw in the third match. Academy were the opposition for the final group game and in a strong performance Kasra Shroff found the net, but the team went down 2:1. This put the U9s into the Shield and HKFC 2 were put to the sword 3:0, with Joel Thirkell, Jasper Palfrey and Kasra Shroff sharing in the goals. They played the Shield final against TTT 2, but glory was not to be, despite a William Holt strike, his 9th of a prolific season and the game was lost 2:1.

KCC U10 Boys Coach Destiny had seen the U10s come close to promotion to the Premiership on several occasions and the Soccer 7s was the perfect occasion to test whether they were ready to challenge again next season. The U10s started well but a little slowly in a 1:0 defeat to BTS. HKD were up next, they had won the last HKJFL tournament, and the KCC matched them blow for blow over the 10 minutes coming away with an impressive 1:1 draw. HKFC 3 were pushed aside 2:1, with goals from the always dangerous Shreenikat and Tom Christmas. Last up in the group stages were TTT, but they proved too strong all across the field and beat the KCC 2:0. This put the U10s into the Shield semi-finals against AIFA. In a tense affair, it looked as if the game might be settled on penalties but AIFA pinched a goal to win 1:0.

KCC U11 Boys As per some of their younger counterparts, the KCC U11s had also had an impressive season in the HKJFL Championship. But their Soccer 7s draw brought tougher opposition and a difficult test. AIFA and APSS won 2:0 and 1:0 to give the boys a wakeup call. The third group game was against SZ Taiwan and although the always impressive Yujin Nishiyama found the target the KCC sadly lost 2:1. A win was needed in the final game to stay in the tournament but the boys couldn’t find a goal and drew 0:0 with HKFC.

KCC U12 Boys With the U11s out, Coach Ming turned his attention to the U12s and trying to progress with this group. Things started slowly with a 0:0 draw against HKFC 3, but 3 points were put on the board as Daiki Yamada struck home in a 1:0 win. A disciplined performance earned another point in a 0:0 draw against APSS. A slightly disappointing 1:0 defeat to TTT 2 did not dampen the mood, and the KCC progressed into the Cup/Plate quarter finals. The competition became a lot harder and despite a battling display ESF won 2:0 to put the KCC into the Plate semi-finals. Another physical game awaited and fatigue started to kick in, and even Trevor Yuen’s relentless running was not enough to stop a 3:0 defeat to AIFA.

KCC Juniors at Citi International Soccer 7s TournamentBy Head Coach, Dave Stewart

KCC U12 & U14 Junior Girls

KCC U12 Girls The girls have slowly been building their squad and developing over the course of the season under Coach Chris’ leadership. Their tournament started cautiously with a goalless draw against TTT 2. The goal net only rippled down the KCC end in the next game as HKD won 1:0. In game 3, things clicked into place and Claudia Brunner scored to give the girls a 1:0 win. MLFA kindly gifted the KCC 3 points by not turning up, and the group stage ended how it finished with a 0:0 draw against HKFC. This put the girls into the final, where BFA stood between them and silverware. A fantastic if slightly tense performance resulted in a 1:0 win, Tara Ramachandran netting the crucial goal. Coach Chris said, “This was a great way for the girls to finish the season!”

KCC U14 Girls The U14s were put into a "group of death" and without their injured top scorer Lily, they failed to find the target in the group stage. However, one draw and three defeats put the girls into the Bowl Final against Tai Tam. Coach Lukalu switched his tactics, and they paid off with Shunka Kakegava and Aariya Jhaveri finding the target at the perfect time to give the KCC a 2:0 win. Coach Lukalu said, “It was a great tournament for the girls, they really had a great time and tried to play good football. It was nice to see them play and win the Bowl.”

FOOTBALL

KCC pin-up boy, Danny Loup was a deserved selection in this year's Yau Yee League (YYL) Select team, who represent the best players from the top amateur league in Hong Kong at the HKFC Citibank 7s.

YYL Select were drawn in a very tough group at this year's tournament, facing French giants Olympique Marseille; Premier League favourites West Ham United; and Hong Kong Premier League side Kitchee. However, YYL Select surprised many at HKFC on the Saturday, managing to pick up 3 successive draws in the group stage to remain undefeated, ensuring they progressed into the Plate Quarter Finals on the Sunday. A very valiant effort from Danny and YYL Select, especially given the quality of the opposition teams, all of whom were professional players.

In Sunday's quarter final match up, YYL Select faced Japanese J-League Champions, Kashima Antlers, a team which had not fared well in the group stage but were not to be underestimated. Unfortunately, even another strong performance from KCC favourite Danny was not enough to stop YYL Select going down 2:0. After 6 weeks without drinking a drop of alcohol in preparation for the 7s tournament, Danny was able to deservedly celebrate a very strong performance by himself and his teammates that Sunday evening.

A huge congrats to Danny for being selected and helping to continue the representation of the KCC in the YYL Select team. A special weekend for Danny was also topped off by meeting Colin Cameron (who was representing the KCC’s Vets team at the tournament). Colin is Danny’s childhood football hero, after scoring one of the goals in Danny’s beloved Heart of Midlothian’s famous 1998 Scottish Cup victory over Rangers FC.

The KCC Royals closed out the season in style, delivering the Legal League Division 3 Title and a very large trophy to the bulging Football trophy Cabinet! The season went down to the final match, however, as the KCC Cavaliers refused to give up, and a win for them and Royals defeat would have meant a very different outcome.

The teams kicked off their matches at the same time at Kings Park. The Cavaliers unfortunately went down to 10 men early, and then ended up 3:1 losers on the night, but regardless the Royals delivered with a 3:2 win, rendering the other result irrelevant!

Dave Christmas had a squad of 23 to pick from ... this was an unprecedented number, due wholly to the smell of success. Despite being awash with numbers, Christmas still had the customary challenge of selecting a quality team! The pre-match team talk lived up to expectations as Christmas thanked his players for the season and reminded them that without the Royals, a normal Monday night highlight would be to zip up their booty slippers and put the grandchildren to bed. The starting 11 was selected, with Captain Scott Allen playing right midfield. Allen was reminded that his place was secured due to incomprehensible enthusiasm rather than merit.

The game against Blue Samarai was a tense affair, as nerves were affecting the players e a r l y o n , a n d w i t h barely 10 minutes on t h e c l o c k a w i c k e d deflection spun into the corner of the KCC goal. But the team showed its resolve and within 2 minutes the equaliser was scored, thanks to the poaching instincts of Paul McGunnigle. Luca then added the 2nd and at half time the Royals led 2:1 and only 40 minutes stood between them and glory! Christmas replaced the jet-lagged Adrian with mighty Dan Schick and Matt Chow came on up the right wing, where he was to have an inspirational 2nd half.

With a mass of support n o w g a t h e r i n g o n t h e t o u c h l i n e t o complement the 12 substitutes, a nervous 2 h a l f p l aye d o u t . C o n f u s i o n i n t h e Royals defence meant that the Blue Samarai equal ised ear ly on and the continued to pressure KCC. The team were tiring, but Frankie and Ben were solid in midfield and Matt

and Dan were working their magic up the wings. Tyrone was again showing composure in defence with Dave, Steve and Andy. The Cavaliers were still losing, so a draw was good enough, but as the game reached the last 10 minutes KCC won a free kick – and from a tight angle Luca drove a low shot/cross into the six-yard box, and as the net bulged, as the say, the rest is history! Some debate raged over a possible touch or deflection, but nobody cares, the KCC Royals were Champions.

Henry from the Legal League was on hand to deliver the trophy, and among scenes of delirium and a chorus of “Champione, Champione” the team celebrated. Ben was given the honour of lifting the tropy to celebrate his departure, oops ... I mean his contribution to the Section, and we wish him well in Australia. The party then continued in the KCC Main Bar, Dave delivered the shortest ever thank you speech, and with the trophy full of cheap champagne and a buffet of crackers and peanuts laid on, the team partied long into the night. In a show of great sportsmanship, Raj and his KCC Cavaliers joined in, but Scott ensured they only looked at the trophy!

Thanks to a l l who have played and supported the team this season!

FOOTBALL

The final weekend of May saw the return of the annual festivities of the HKFC Citibank 7s, with our KCC Vets making another appearance in the masters tournament. The build up and tournament itself lived up to the billing and expectation yet again.

Preparation for the tournament kicked off in early May, with trials and a rigorous training schedule led by Head Coach and Yorkshire lad ‘dun gud’, Dan Jacques, who was taking the Vets for the second year running. He was joined in the dug out by his right hand man and KCC mums' favourite, Lord Thomas.

After weeks of intense training and practice matches, there was a final cut for the team – and thoroughly well deserved places went to Daniel Schick, Marcel Sossnowski, Paolo Giannelli, Frankie Ferreira, Steve Rigby, Paul McGunnigle, and two debutants to the vets 7s; Matt Chow and Scott Allen. This year, these eight KCC football section members were joined in the squad by three ex professional. The first ex pro, Allan McManus, a stalwart defender for Hearts and St Johnstone, returned to KCC for the third year in row to represent the team. Alongside Allan, we were lucky to have another Scot, Colin Cameron, a true Hearts (Danny Loup’s childhood idol) and Scotland fan favourite, a true goal scoring midfielder who represented his country 28 times. The third ex Pro to make up the trio was a man who played for Roma and over 400 times for Cagliari FC in Italy, only retiring from the professional game two years before; he’s a true Cagliari legend with a massive cult following in Italy (and now in HK!) – Daniele Conti, a majestic midfield dynamo.

The strength of the squad was going to be integral with the draw for the group opponents, made up of: YYL Masters (who had beaten the KCC vets in last year's Plate Final), HKFC Captain Select, Wallsend Boys and Playon Pro’s. The Playon team were made up with a number of big name ex pros including David James, Emile Heskey, Colin Hendry, Lee Hendrie, Des Walker and Kevin Gallen, and managed by England legend Viv Anderson, while Wallsend Boys were always strong at the 7s, bringing ex players such as Michael Bridges.

In the week building up to the tournament, Colin and Allan flew into HK on the Tuesday, planning to run a coaching session with the KCC juniors on the Wednesday. However, due to a black rainstorm, the training was unfortunately cancelled. This did however provide additional time for to enjoy the wonderful services of the KCC Bar! On the Thursday evening, the team enjoyed an entertaining night at the HKFC Sportmans Dinner, with Ireland and Aston Villa star Andy Townsend the guest speaker. The next day was the first day of the tournament, and KCC’s first game on the Friday night was v YYL Masters, followed by a second game v Wallsend Boys. As the team met Daniele for the first time, it was clear we had a really class act (both on and off the pitch … even if his English was limited!) on our hands.

HKFC CITI SOCCER 7’s 2017 & Cagliari’s visit to KCCBy Ben aka Lord Thomas

After a frustrating 0:0 result in the opening game against YYL Masters, who had just surprised tournament favourites Playon Pro’s with 1:0 victory, we moved on to our second game against Wallsend boys, who had just dispatched HKFC 5:1 in their opening game. Despite losing an early goal, KCC battled back to 1:1 after a moment of pure brilliance from the new KCC fan favourite, Daniele, who smashed in a left foot peach from 20 yards, much to the delight of a strong KCC contingent in the HKFC stands. This set up a brilliant platform for the team to pick up from on the Saturday, when they faced the old enemy HKFC and the star studded Playon Pros.

Saturday turned out to be a scorching day, with temperatures in the 30s; conditions were going to be a tough for 7s football. However, with the first game against the host of the tournament, HKFC Captain Select and the KCC vets team starting to gel nicely together under the captaincy of Marcel, the team were confident of getting one over their old foe. The KCC fans were out in force on the Saturday as always, led by J-Mac, Jim Down, Shyam, Ballsy, Dave Xmas and joined by our club President, David Burnett. They were not to be disappointed, with a true masterclass performance by the KCC Vets. Daniele and Paolo scored goals to make it a comfortable 2:0 scoreline. Despite a late, 90-second cameo appearance of from Riggers, which resulted in a late penalty and goal for the opposition, KCC were worthy winners 2:1.

It then came down to the final group game against Playon Pro, and following other results in the group, this meant at least a point would be required for KCC to reach the next round. However, with news of a calf injury to Daniele the task was made even harder. The game started well, with KCC having much of the better play and only a heroic save from ex England keeper, David James, keeping out a cracking shot from McGunnigle after a great team move. However, with only seconds remaining of the first half, Playon broke and scored a goal to make it 1:0 at the break. KCC again dominated the 2nd half, but the team of ex pros managed to secure a second goal with KCC pressing high, ultimately ending the hopes of qualification for the boys in green and white. Even a late appearance from vets debutant, Scott Allen wasn’t enough to turn things around.

The Vets can hold their heads up high after a fantastic tournament, and a points tally so high that in previous years it would have easily been enough to advance to the next rounds.

A huge thanks to all the KCC players – Marcel, Daniel, Paul, Frankie, Matt, Steve, Scotty and Paolo, who put in their all and did the Club proud yet again. Likewise to Jacquesy and Ben for coaching, and another big thank you for the fantastic support from the KCC faithful in the HKFC stands, which at times is like having an extra man on the pitch! Finally to our flown in ex-pros: Allan, Colin and Daniele, for their efforts, engagements and all round class on and off the pitch.

The weeks festivities did not finish there, however, and on Monday with the support of Luca (who had been the Cagliari FC chaperone for the week), we arranged for their players and coaches to come to KCC for lunch with the HKFA and senior KCC figures, before running a training session with the Sprouts Foundation charity, and our KCC juniors. The day wasn’t quite over yet, with a gathering in the KCC bar for a meet and greet with the Cagliari players, an exchange of gifts between Cagliari and the Club, before being topped off with a lucky draw in which were some fantastic prizes were given, such as signed Cagliari shirts, memorabilia, Daniele Conti’s book and a signed Colin Cameron Scotland shirt. It really was a fitting end to a brilliant week and terrific day. Many thanks to Luca, Shyam, Jim, Johnny Mac and Jacquesy for helping to organise the day.

I sign this article off as my last as a KCC member, as I leave to Australia in June to start a new job. I’d like to express a huge amount of gratitude and thanks to everyone at the Club – but obviously the football section, for a very special 3 years in HK with the KCC. It has been a huge honour and pleasure to represent this fantastic club (with any doubt the best sports club in HK) and I will really miss it and everyone connected to the Club. Weeks such as this one just remind me of what a great club it is, and I will look back with so many fond memories of KCC.

FOOTBALL

The KCC U16 Colts finished the season on a high, but narrowly missed out on the Division 2 title, as a 5:0 defeat to eventual champions Tuen Mun put paid to any dreams and aspirations. However, the boys rallied and in the final game against Sham Shui Po won 3:1 thanks to a wonder goal from Nick Lumley-Smith, and two more from goal machine James Francis (taking him to 13 goals in 9 matches). That allowed the KCC to leapfrog Sham Shui Po and finish 2nd in the table and top off a successful season in which Islands, Sha Tin, Kowloon City, Tsuen Wan, Eastern and Sai Kung were all beaten.

The U15s technically still have 2 games left, but given the player registration issues faced by some clubs this season, as we write this the U15s lie in 2nd place, where they finished last season. Despite the departure of key players Kelvin Adom and Luke Dow to the UK, the boys have rallied together in the latter stages of the season to produce some fine football and maintain their position at the top of the league. The pick of the season’s results were a 13:0 win vs Kwun Tong, and having lost 3:0 to Yuen Long only a week before managing to turn the tables on them and win 2:1 with goals from Ethan Squires and Mathew Kirkman. The whole squad has worked hard for each other, but Ethan Squires' 22 goals in 16 games deserve a mention in a fruitful season.

KCC’s U15 & U16 Colts – HKFA LeagueBy Dave Stewart

The KCC Young Women ended the season in style and in typical fashion with a 1:0 win, signalling the team's 10th clean sheet of the campaign. National team keeper Allyson and Jade take a bow! Our thanks also go to Chloe, the team’s top scorer and Captain, for not only scoring this goal but also for returning to the team after a year’s break.

We had so many great performances over the season from so many of the players; too many to name individually, but they know who they are! We again saw more girls stepping up from the U14 Junior teams, which is always encouraging, and we saw some longstanding players again deliver passionate performances.

I do have to mention Kati Gerigk, however, as she was probably one of the team's most consistent performers throughout the season. With this and her commitment to the Assistant Coaching role supporting the APSS team on Saturdays. as well as her HKFA National Team selection, I was pleased to again see her recognised as the KCC “Jim Down Junior

Football of the Year Trophy” winner. This award is a great accolade, and she is now the 3rd young woman to achieve this, after Lella Lee and Kaela Townson.

This season, I believe injury – courtesy of 3 ACLs and a broken ankle, as well as availability issues, robbed the team from achieving the ultimate prize. Chelsea remain our main rivals, but they were not the superior force of past seasons, so it was good to see us keep the pressure on them and end up with less goals conceded than them. Other teams are definitely getting stronger, however, so this will continue to be a very competitive league.

I really hope we can come back stronger next season and push for the title again, and bring home the main prize to KCC! For a number of our older girls, who will be too old for the team after next season, it would be a fitting conclusion to their involvement with the KCC Youth Football Programme.

Anyway, I conclude by adding a massive well done to all the players and their parents, many of whom turned up to many of the games; and of course to Coach Henry for his hard work on the training ground and at the matches. Have a great summer holidays, and I for one can’t wait to do it all again next season!

Ladies B Team Captain's Report - Victorious Despite Accident, May 28Our second away game was played at Apleichau, indoors. Before the game, all players went and practised there. On the day, we all did very well.

Players of Linda and Dolores’ rinks concentrated on their game, and finally both teams scored more than their opponents. For my rink, we were able to get shots ahead of our opponents for the first 4 ends. Unfortunately, at the 5th end, Pari had an accident and was sent to Queen Mary Hospital. Despite the accident, we continued with our fight. Finally. though our rink was lost, the aggregate was more than the points we lost. We got 6 points for an away game, which was another encouraging result. Thank you ladies!!!

As for Pari, after her admission, it was confirmed that apart from a fracture, there were no other complications. We all wish Pari will have a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her continue with her lawn bowling. Pari, Keep Fighting!

Captain Alice Chung

Mens C Team Captain’s Report – A Team for Real Greens, June 2017Following an 8:0 defeat in our away game to Club de Recreio on 13 May, we had a tremendous comeback in our home game against Hong Kong Electric’s lawn bowl team, HEGSC-A, on 20 June.

After 4 matches, the C Team has scored 15 points and is ranked No. 7 in Division 5. The scores among the teams in Division 5 is very close, with only a 3 point difference between the team ranked No. 4 and the team ranked No. 8.

Although everyone put up a hard fight, unfortunately our away game to HKPBC on 27 May did not earn us any points at all. It seems that playing on artificial green is not our strength. Out of the five games we played, all the three away games were played on artificial green, and so far we have scored only one point in the three games.

Unfortunately, among the 10 teams in Division 5, only HKFC and KCC have genuine grass greens. All the rest play on artificial greens. To overcome our weakness, more practice on artificial greens will be organised for the team members in the remainder of the season.

Captain Eric Wong

Men’s D Team Report - Ordeal by Scrawny YouthsMost of my childhood memories are happy memories. The brain has a way of filtering out those memories that were not so pleasant, but a couple still remain: going to the dentist to have a tooth extracted is one, and doing Algebra in school is another.

For ageing bowlers the annual trip to Tai Po to play against the HKLBA Youth arouses feelings of dread, and the nightmares preceding the game linger long after the game has been played. Newbies travel to Tai Po with a mixture of feelings: fear from all the tales of woe from those who have been there before, but defiance too. There is always the belief that they may just be the ones to conquer the green: they are however soon brought to heel.

In fairness to the Hong Kong Government, the ordeal isn’t quite what it was. The inner green has now been replanted with a different kind of grass, and for the first time in my living memory it more resembled a bowling green than a beach.

It was very interesting to see Pravin (a newbie) deliver his first trial wood: you could see the whites of his eyes as it stopped short of half way. Moshin, another newbie, fared no better despite him doing a pirouette; and when Don (the arm) also failed to get half way you could see the realisation dawn that there was indeed a mountain to climb.

Another aspect of playing in Tai Po that brings shame to all bowlers is the fact that grown men cannot get their wood to reach the head, while scrawny youths (three of whom wouldn’t equal one of us in weight) manage it with ease. The glee on their faces when they see us trying to deliver our woods like ten pin bowling balls down an alley and failing to get anywhere near the other end also rubs salt into the wound.

It wasn’t all gloom and doom. Abbas and his rink – Chris, William and Garry, continued their winning streak and brought us home two points, and in my rink, Adrian (a goalkeeper from the footballsection) put us all to shame by having an excellent game, even though this was his first time wearing the shirt.

For the rest of us (Uncle Bill, Dad, Roger and myself ), there were a few more scars to add to the list we have already have from our trips to this green.

There is often a happy lining to a sad story, and of course this tale has one too. The eskie full of ice cold drinks to savour on the return journey acted as a salve to many wounds – and by the time we reached KCC new legends were created, to tell when huddled around the fireside on cold winter nights.

In the following matches, even we performed well but we didn’t get expected results at Away matches. In result we were struggling at lower rank of the table during last several games due to the fact that the scores between several sides were very close. Having been playing squash for over 30 years, there were many times to get a trophy in the leagues series and final knock-out. However, it is never easy to get a double champion in the Winter Squash League. And the only key to the lock is always a trustful and selfless team.

The 2016/2017 Division 8A started smoothly, without too many hiccups. However the challenge came when we lost our first match to HKFC, 2:3, on 21 November. Our lady player, Dorothy Ko, suffered from knee and angle injuries, and together with our China-based star player Clement Yu being missing, this made the team had just one reserve player in the upcoming matches.

Perhaps the team enjoyed themselves too much during Xmas time; alarmingly, we lost another match to the Police, 0:5, on 9 January – right after the New Year break, leaving us not much room leading in the league table. Although we beat HKCC and HKFC at 4:1 and 5:0, we gave another match to Global, 1:4, on the day before Valentine’s, which was not romantic at all as Global were chasing right behind us throughout the year.

There was more bad luck for the team as Pinky Li and Andy Lau suffered from mild back pain and meniscus tearing at the critical moment. Wan-Man took up the job, and together with the stable performances from Yan, Kwong and Phoebe, the team secured overall League Champion with an 11-point gap.

We thought the success would be carried to the Final Knock Out, but it wasn’t. Global defeated us for the 2nd time during the first round, 1:3, without the need for the last player. However, the hunger for victory brought us back to the track after again giving a match, 4:0 to HKFC. The final match with Global was dramatic. We didn’t lose our faith and our young ladies gave a lesson to the young guys, and our gentlemen players also demonstrate the value of vintage, and finished the year with a 3:2 win.

The Double Champion does not belong to any one player, but is the best proof of team collaboration – as we all shared, suffered, enjoyed and struggled together in the team. Without any one of the team members, we would not have enjoyed the resounding success in the 2016/2017 series. And we are KCC6 Squash team!

Annual Match Against Hong Kong Footall ClubBy Kat Labrum

We hosted the HKFC squash section on Saturday, 27 May, for our annual social event. We had a promising turnout, as over 30 players of varying abilities from both teams put their names forward for a day that proved to be full of nail-biting, exciting plays.

The afternoon got underway at 2pm, and a handful of matches were secured early by the visiting side. Matches were kept to the best of five games, with each game being played to 11 points. The effects of a long and tiring season could be seen in some matches, as players from both teams weren’t so sprightly and fresh on their feet. Nonetheless, everyone gave each shot their best – and many sneaky serves, tight drives and perfect drop shots were on show for us all to enjoy.

However, as t ime wore on, HKFC ’s lead was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with. After keeping a close eye on scores, we were able to pull back a few games and get within a slightly closer reach of the HKFC total. In recent years, we were able to secure the trophy, but that was looking unlikely this year as the afternoon came to a close.

At the end of it all, we unfortunately lost to a very strong and deserving HKFC side. But, as with all of our social events, the final score was not the most important element of the day – as a wonderful afternoon was had by all, as old friends came together and new faces were introduced and welcomed to Hong Kong’s tight-knit squash community.

On behalf of the Section and participating players, I would like to thank Steve Gollop, the HKFC social convener, for his help in ensuring the afternoon went smoothly. I would also like to thank Aaron for all his help and advice throughout what proved to be a tricky event to organise and, last but certainly not least, I would also like to extend my thanks to Victoria Cruz for her valuable help throughout the afternoon. We couldn’t have done it without you, Victoria!

Our next social event will be held later in the year, and we will be playing HKCC. If anyone would like to sign up and participate, please let a member of the squash sub-committee know. For now, I am sure we will all use the off-season to rest, relax and prepare for what I am sure will be another strenuous season of squash.

Outstanding performance by KCC Juniors at Asia Squash Championship 2017By Aaron Yip

Our junior subscribers, Leo Au, Annie Au and Eunice Tong, participated in the Asia Squash Championship, held in India. In the mens' division, Leo Au failed to defend his title after losing to the home favourite, world number 28 Surav Ghosal, in the semi final. In the ladies' division, Eunice Tong and Annie Au lost to Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinapa, respectively, in the semi-finals, and came third in the tournament. Congratulations to Leo, Annie and Eunice.

In May 2017, with the help of our subcommittee member Anthony Yu, we managed to obtain Sergio Tacchini tennis uniform sponsorship for our league teams, from Mr Wayman Ho of Gallant Sport Supplies Ltd.

According to Mr Ho, Sergio Tacchini is an Italian heritage brand his company brought to Hong Kong in 2016, and is now the official apparel sponsor for the Hong Kong tennis team. Mr Ho also advised that our KCC tennis club is the first tennis club they are sponsoring in Hong Kong, because he is proud to support our prestigious Club and teams.

The sponsorship involves suppling uniforms to the Men’s A+ team, the Ladies A+ team, and Men’s A, B, C and D teams. The uniform worn by members not only reflects the teams' smart outlook, but also unifies the team spirit – and on this note, a heartfelt thanks to Mr Ho for his generosity and support, and thanks to Anthony for the arrangement.

Shoulder Overuse Injury

1. Stand with shoulders wide, hold a thera band with one hand and bend your elbow at 90 degrees

2. Rotate your hand while held out, so it is lined up with your side of your body

In fact, over-use injuries are far more common than traumatic ones at the shoulder joint. Sporting movements that involve the arm in elevation and rotation while under heavy loading – e.g. over-arm throwing, swimming and overhead strokes in racquet sports, can contribute to over-use injuries of the shoulder joint.

If you get injured, you should rest, to refrain from the activity until you feel no pain before starting to exercise again. And there are some suggested exercises to help build up muscles for joint protection, hence reducing the chance of getting injured again:

1. Stand with shoulders wide, hold a thera band with one hand, bend your elbow at 90 degree, and lift your arm up so that the hand, elbow and shoulder are at the same level

2. Rotate your shoulder up, so that your hand is lined up with your side of your body

Shoulder external rotation

Do you ever feel pain in your shoulder due to repeated shoulder rotation in sports such as tennis or swimming?

The May Wine Society Tasting and Dinner held in the Grill Room on the 19th featured the outstanding wines of Leeuwin Estate in the Margaret River wine growing Region in Western Australia.

Leeuwin Estate is one of the foremost producers in this highly regarded wine region. A small gathering of Members enjoyed a selection of wines of wines from top echelon “Art Series”: a rare flight of all 6 vintages of their flagship Chardonnay from 2000 to 2005 followed by the 1999, 2001 and 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. These older vintages of Chardonnay generally held up very well given their age. With the dinner, the Art Series 2011 Sauvignon Blanc was also served. Those adventurous enough were able to savour the full ‘Aussie’ menu with Kangaroo steak and Pavola to finish. No Aussie dinner would be complete either, without some Noble One dessert wine – in this case the 2010 vintage.

Complements to Chef Sing and his staff for the interesting ‘Aussie’ fare.

Another wonderful evening enjoyed by all.

This July, the Wine Society will be organizing its tasting and dinner at the Crown Wine Cellars and will be organized by Prem Kumar. The theme will be Bush Wines from South Africa similar to the picture here. Bush vines or also known as “Goblet vines” (as known in Roman times) are very popular in countries like Spain, New Zealand, France and South Africa. The fruits are close to the ground with foliage above and the roots can go as deep as 30 meters allowing to survive droughts. The grape berries are smaller and concentrated allowing for slow maturation and quality. This will be an interesting evening and please sign up early as seats are limited.

Held on every 2nd Thursday of the month, members can taste wines that are being selected for the wine list as well as tasting some rare bottles found in the cellars. We hope through these tasting, your palate can be kept up-to-date with the revised wine-list and provide valuable feedback to the committee for future purchases.

My personal favourite, Nansha Golf Course, was May’s venue for our KCC Stableford League meet. Always a beauty, with well maintained fairways & greens, making it a real pleasure to play this course. With 20 players in all, the “gods” decided to smile on our perseverance, and gave us a nice on/off sunny day with a cool breeze, in between a week full of dull weather and rains in Nansha.

We had 3 new members who just joined the Golf Society for our May event: Selina Chong, Tim Chong and Mathew Chow. A warm welcome to them from KCC Golf Society, and looking forward to seeing them for the remaining league calendar.

Some of the best performances of the day Peter Shum, hitting 1 Birdie, 8 Pars, 7 Bogeys, with a final score of 83 and 42 Stableford points, was the outright winner of the day. Peter’s impressive form is just getting better with every meeting; he has played in 4 events this year, and is coming in with improving Stableford points scores each month. At this rate, a sure contender for the cup. Second place was very closely contended, with 4 players getting 37 Stableford points (Johnny Cheung, Gabriel Lam, Ashok Mahtani & Sanjay Nainani), but Johnny Cheung

taking 2nd Place with a countback of 22 Stableford points, 1 Birdie and 7 Pars on the back 9 holes. Among the Ladies, our Winner of the day was Margaret Chan, with a net score of 81 and 27 Stableford points; and in 2nd Place was our debutant, Selina Chong, with a net score of 85 and 24 Stableford points. Overall, the KCC league is becoming a breeding ground for some very good golfers. An interesting statistic was the number of pars we achieved at the Nansha: a total of 69 pars among the 19 golfers. A special mention to our highest par hitter, Gabriel Lam (8 Pars), and Ashok Mahtani, Gary Sharma, Peter Shum and Suresh Gopisetty, all hitting 7 pars apiece. Definitely, a target to improve on as a group, for next month’s meeting.

The Golf Society organised a Fun Night, with a tenpin bowling competition for the all compelling sportsmen. It was a pleasure to see so many members turn up for what was more a great social event then an actual competition, and for a change chasing turkeys instead of birdies! It was also great to see some of the members who have not been able to make it to the league games so far for various commitments, but managed to make it for this informal event to enjoy great wine and entertainment. With this being our 2nd Meet and Greet Event, it is turning into an annual event where we can see more members attending for “Off the course banter” from all our fellow Golf Society members!

Funnies:

A U.S. citizen is vacationing on his own in Ireland. He decides to play a round of golf and is paired with three local gents.

He takes a few practice swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds to hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head, reaches in his pocket, and re-tees another ball. He tells his playing partners that he is taking a Mulligan. He pounds one down the centre of the fairway about 280 yards out.

With a big smile, he asks the others "In the U.S., we call that a Mulligan; was wondering what you called it here in Ireland."

After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies, "Hitting three."

Lesson: Counting 13 HCPs in his hand, South reasoned that his partner had nothing, and the CQ was most likely with East. Leading a small one would definitely give away a trick. So he hoped that the CQ was a singleton, and tried to drop it. Very logical!

Tenpin Bowling Fun Night - 25 May 2017By Audrey Tang

This was the Bowling Society’s 3rd year organising the Tenpin Bowling Fun Night. The event was held in the evening of Thursday 25 May in KCC Bowling Alley. Most of the participants were from the Cricket Section and the Bowling Society. Each played two games and enjoyed a light buffet, and mingling with one another in a casual atmosphere. Four teams were formed and had a friendly competition.

The team with the highest total score were “The Scanamans” from the Cricket Section.

A hearty congratulations to Mr Scott Mckechnie, who achieved several personal high scores: Player with Most Strikes, Highest Game and Highest Average. He was even voted the most energetic player by all who participated.

Outstanding AchievementsBy Olivia Mak

46

A young Table Tennis Society member, Olivia Mak, recently won the primary school girls' Doubles title in the annual Hang Seng All Schools Championships 2017 (恆生學界盃 ), and helped Maryknoll Convent School capture the overall girls' title for the very first time.

The prestigious Championships, which took place on 13 May and 11 June at the Cornwall Street Indoor Sports Centre, attracted all the city's top table tennis talents.

After 6 knock-out rounds against formidable opponents (including DGJS), Olivia and her partner emerged victorious. But it was not without really hard-fought battles, especially in the grand final, which turned out to be a nail-biting, thrilling match.

In the final set of this 5-setter showdown, Olivia's team was trailing 4:9 and things were not looking promising at all. Then, at 5:10, when they were on the verge of being beaten (and with no more timeout to call), they did not give up but rose to the challenge, saving all 5 critical match points one by one. The game then went on to deuce, and again proceeded in roller-coaster mode. With stamina and great determination, Olivia's team finally surpassed the opponents to take the set 15:13, and with this the match, the doubles title and the overall championship.

Here's a photo of Olivia with her well-deserved trophies. Many congratulations indeed on such remarkable achievement!

47

Events Calendar

By the time this article is published, the Table Tennis Society will have a new sub-committee. After four years behind the scenes, starting from humble beginnings, Martin and Kishu will be stepping aside to make way for new blood. A very solid framework is now in place, and under new leadership the new Society will continue to flourish. The GC has provided invaluable support and there is every expectation this will remain.

It is up to the existing membership to maintain their interest in playing and, hopefully, for new members to join our ranks. Please remember that all ages and all abilities are most welcome.

We are extremely happy that there were many members' children who participated, not only by practicing with the older members and coaches, but also entering competitions at home and away and beating experienced opposition.

Imagine: we had kids as young as 9 years old playing and doing extremely well! What we really hope is that the very good, middle-aged, "hidden" and shy members will join the Table Tennis Society – and hopefully strengthen the team that has entered the Hong Kong Table Tennis League.

We take this opportunity to thank the existing members of the Society for supporting us and making us believe we have done a reasonable job. My thanks also to those who have given up their time to serve on past sub-committees. Your contributions and support have been invaluable and much appreciated. We wish the Society every success going forward.

KCC has now played its 3rd match of the season – against Hong Kong Country Club, in a home fixture in mid-May. Our team lined up with Bennie (Capt.), Adrian, Don M and Dharam. The team hit top form in the 4 singles matches, and won all 4, giving them an unassailable lead heading into the doubles. Dharam and Bennie soon had KCC 5:0 up with a comfortable win in the first of the doubles, but a close final frame swung in the favour of our visitors. Still, a very respectable 5:1 win was our best of the season so far!

HKCC did, however, leave the KCC happy – with bellies full of curry and a few friendly games afterwards over a few drinks. The social part of the night is as important as the serious snooker it starts with!

Inter-Club League 2017By Adrian Townson

The Peter Austin Tournament has now been completed, and congratulations to:

- Don McNeil in the Trophy, beating Navin Ahuja by 3 frames to 1, - Francis Hung in the Bowl, beating Patrick O’Neil by 3 frames to 1, and - Don Poon in the Plate, beating Adrian Townson by 3 frames to 2.

The snooker ladder competition continues, but Don Poon remains at the top! The Snooker Leagues are just about complete, with only a handful of games remaining.

The Pink Ticket (Billiards) Tournament has started, and our in-house season will end in June with the President’s and Vice President’s Trophies.

Saturday 20 May saw KCC up against the Ladies Recreation Club in our penultimate match in this newly formed “friendly” League.

Requiring victory to still be in a position to be Champions of this inaugural League, the KCC Ladies parings of Lisa/May and Sabrina/Cindy saw us home with two comprehensive wins – giving us an unassailable 2:0 lead heading into the mixed pairings match. Winnie/Paul were up against very strong opposition, and sadly came up short despite some very hard fought points.

A 2:1 victory was well deserved and we will head into the final match against Hong Kong Football Club with the confidence to seal victory and, hopefully, win the League.

Once again, our thanks to Coach Liew and the impeccable organisation by Cindy.
