What’s News MISSION STATEMENT

The aim of Staines Memorial College is to provide Christ-centred schooling in an atmosphere of love, respect, peace and discipline which will encourage students to achieve their potential for God.

Principal’s Message

How we should live God’s instructions in Romans 12, for how we should live, expand upon the first commandment. The first and most important commandment, according to Jesus Christ, is that we love God and love others as we love ourselves. The following words can be found in Romans 12 verses 9-19. “Your love must be real. Hate what is

evil. Do only what is good. Love each other in a way that makes

you feel close like brothers and sisters. And give each other more honour than you give yourself.

As you serve the Lord, work hard and don't be lazy. Be excited about serving him!

Be happy because of the hope you have. Be patient when you have troubles. Pray all the time.

Share with God's people who need help. Look for people who need help and welcome them into your homes.

Wish only good for those who treat you badly. Ask God to bless them, not curse them.

When others are happy, you should be happy with them. And when others are sad, you should be sad too.

Live together in peace with each other. Don't be proud, but be willing to be friends with people who are not important to others. Don't think of yourself as smarter than everyone else.

If someone does you wrong, don't try to pay them back by hurting them. Try to do what everyone thinks is right.

Do the best you can to live in peace with everyone.

My friends, don't try to punish anyone who does wrong to you. Wait for God to deal with them in His time.”

With God’s help we can live out these instructions and, when we do, the world around us will be significantly better and we will experience a great peace. This is what we want for each member of our community. I look forward to your continued participation with us in the adventure of learning to love as Jesus Christ demonstrated. From the Principal Welcome back. It is great to also welcome 7 new families.

This term starts with Athletics Carnivals, Parent Teacher Interviews and our very special celebration of the arts and cultures on Thursday 28th July at Shiloh Church. Your participation in all these events is greatly encouraged.

Another highlight in the next two weeks will be the annual Year 6 camp. All our camps are designed to build “keys to success”—confidence, persistence, resilience, organisational, team and personal skills. The Year 6 camp has a focus for preparing students for high school years. The cost of camps is inclusive in your child’s fees because we believe they are very important to your child’s development.

Building on our purpose designed Prep facility is making progress with the floor being poured last Thursday. Shortly and level 2 will be poured. This week we’ll submit an application for a dedicated Primary undercover area. Pray that our application is approved and funded to the highest possible level.

Finally, please continue to invite others to become a part of our great community. In anticipation, thank you.

Report Cards Semester One Report Cards were emailed during the holidays. If you have not received your child’s Semester 1 Report Card please contact the Administration team.

Term’s Notice A reminder that it is a condition of enrolment that families must provide the College with one term’s notice of departure. If families leave without due notice, a term’s fees will be charged and we take steps to recover the debts, including using debt collectors. Any action is not taken lightly but we need to be financially responsible and keep fees as low as possible for all continuing families.

Mr Sands

Chaplain’s Spot

When God wants to restore a whole society to health he “turns the heart of the parents to the children and the heart of the children to the parents” as is made clear in the very last verses of the Old Testament of the Bible. With these words recorded in Malachi 4:6 the prophet summarises what it means to transform a society. The family unit is the engine room of society, the incubator that produces the next generation and so a primary focus of societal transformation must be to “turn the hearts of the parents to the children and hearts of the children to the parents”. At the end of this term there is a great opportunity to do just that at the ‘Father and Son Getaway’ being held at Somerset dam over a long weekend. You are most welcome to join us for a great weekend of camping, fishing, crab potting, free mini golf, movie on the big screen, sports, great food, marshmallows around the campfire and discus-sions relevant to the relationship between fathers and sons. You can find the flyer with further details on page 3 of this newsletter. Have a great fortnight!

- Chaplain Peter

Year 10 Legal Studies Excursion

On the 20th June, the Year 10 Legal Studies class went to the Supreme Court in Brisbane. Student Feedback / Review: ‘The process of how the jury was picked was very interesting. I also enjoyed how we went to Subway for lunch.’ Ianeta ‘I found it fascinating the amount of respect everyone has for the judge where you have to bow when entering and leaving the court room.’ Anluise ‘Going to the Courts was a really cool experience because we got to see how the courts worked, it was nothing like Judge Judy. It was unusual being so close to criminals and watching them being sentenced.’ Lora ‘This learning experience has taught me that all cases need to be punished equally and that we should always respect the law.’ Chloe S ‘I found it difficult to hide the sympathy I had towards the accused, hearing their problems and the crimes they had committed.’ Precious
