I was away for a little while and a whole lots happened in my absence… some not so good… but some brilliant! Plett is incredibly proud of Leigh Dunn from Formosa Primary School who was awarded a very well-deserved first place in the country for excellence in the category of ; Special Needs Teaching at the recent national Teaching Awards held in Johannesburg - Our mountain Bike champion, Kevin Evans, who was crowned as the Ride The Rock Champion when he won overall in the men’s category of the 3 staged race . - Blaine Dodds and William Edwards who were placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the National Hobie 14 Championships which were held in Knysna recently. And - Lucinda and Pippy Edwards who won the Ladies Hobie 16 title. - I did get to see the fabulous Formosa Primary School Talent show of dance, singing and even karate! Our kids are great. Even the enthusiastic audience started sharing their moves. Thanks to all those in Plett who organise and encourage our youth. You are stars! Great Plett people who all promote a positive Plett Image. Have another fabulous fun-filled week in our beautiful Bay.

First Walking Festival gets ready to launch - Get Involved The Eden Walking Festival is a unique concept where local walkers are invited to be walk leaders and 'guides' during the festival. Organ-iser Galeo Saintz, invites all like-minded walkers, hikers and adventurers from across the Garden Route to get involved. The festival is South Africa's first dedicated walking festival with over 40 walks offered from easy strolls to

strenuous peak bagging. The festival includes walks from George Peak to Storms River, including beach walks, night walks, speed-dating walks, elephant walks, forest walks and coastal meanders. The programme aims to cater to every type of walker, from the adventurous to those who just love to take it easy. Family friendly and pet friendly walks are also on the list. Walking festivals are an important tourism attraction across Europe, with some of the older festivals drawing up to 15 000 walkers for festivals that last over 2 weeks. The Eden Walking Festival aims to become the premier walking event in South Africa and in time will draw many new visitors to our beautiful shores that truly are a walker's paradise. The festival is looking for dedicated walkers from George to Storms River to head-up their section of the festival. If you know of anyone who loves walking and would like to lead a trail or walk during the festival, please tell them about this. And if you would like to be involved and lead a walk, please visit the website today and see what walks are still open for leaders, or contact us and suggest your own walk. Conservation Corner Hi! My name is Satu Hakkarainen and I am volunteering for ORCA Foundation. I just wanted to remind you of the importance of saving fresh water. Fresh water is one of the elements to life on earth. We need it to grow food, keep clean, provide power, control fire and of course - staying alive! Did you know that we have the same amount of water now as there was when the earth was created. This means we only have certain amount of water to use so we need to take good care of it. Did you also know that from all of earth’s water we can use only 0,05 %? Rest of it is frozen or salt water. We have 7 billion people on earth and only 0,05 % of our water is usable and some of it is already badly polluted, think about that my friends. Besides the fact that we have responsibility to maintain fresh water to our future generations, we also need to control our water use because it saves energy and money, not to mention environment. Just as a example, you are using 6 litres of water when washing up bowl under running water, when you clean teeths you use 2 litres of

water, washing machine uses 120 litres and dishwasher 55 litres, flushing the toilet is 15 litres every time, taking a shower takes 35 litres and when you are using garden house it uses 10 litres every minute. Pheww! Everybody needs to bring water use control to their every day life, it can’t be something you think about once and a while. You can (and you definetly need to) take shorter showers and close the water off when lathering or washing your hair. You don’t have to flush every time: if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down! Watch out for dripping taps (one drop per second), that can waste up to 30 litres of water an hour, which adds up to 10 000 litres a year! Don’t wash fruits or dishes under running water, start only fully loaded washing machines and use rainwater when watering the plants or cleaning your car. Saving water is crucial for humans to stay on this planet and everybody who uses water is also responsible for saving it. Everyone Welcome

Open 7 days a week

News from Community Policing Forum On the February 2012, CPF had a general meeting. The house was completely full, the community took decisively, unwavering decision to elect again the executive committee of CPF. They wanted the chairper-son of CPF Mr Rengule to lead again the old committee. They are very confident and trust the experi-ence executive committee. CPF doesn’t support mob justice, kanga-roo court, vigilantism, xenophobia activities, anti-social behavior, anti-democratic social activities, drug and alchol abuse, rape and domes-tic violence. The street committee must play important role to keep the street, houses, children, elder people safe as possible. The people are not allowed to take law on their own hands, the culprit must be taken to the police. People must work hand in hand with police and CPF to pre-vent crime. Plettenberg Bay can be one of the safest place in the world only if all the people of Plettenberg Bay can work together to fight crime. Yours in Struggle X.D Faku (Media Officer)

The “Plett Easter Games” will be held 5 April – 10 April over the Easter Weekend and into the school holidays. This will be the second year of the games, organ-ised by the Plett Nature Sports Company. The events include a golf tourna-ment at Plett Country Club, a Trail Run at Cairnbrogie Estate, an Open Water swim (the Beacon Isle Mile), the Penny Pinchers Surf Ski Chal-lenge, a Mountain Bike Race, a Surf Ski challenge and a run through our local Kwanokathula Township. To ensure that there is something for the entire family, over five days there are 9 different events offering sport, music, entertainment and fun. All this within the pristine beauty of Plettenberg Bay. Every event is linked to a local char-ity or social up-liftment program thereby ensuring that your participa-tion benefits those less fortunate. The festival will be launched with the “Plett Beach Cred

Dinner Party” in a historical monument/building called The Timber Shed, down at the Wedge beach on the 5th of April. This dinner party for 250 restaurant patrons and guests is a Plett Restaurant Association initia-tive and will be partially sponsored by BOS iced tea and Radio Algoa. The idea is to promote and highlight the chefs and restaurants in Plett. Radio Algoa’s Charl Lesley will be the MC and guest chef for the eve-ning. Event Organisers: Louise Craig (c) 072 467 1665; Patty Butterworth (c) 083 453 5331; (f) 086 241 1975

The trail running routes will follow cattle paths through Fynbos filled kloofs and a fisherman’s path will take runners to with in a stones throw of the ocean some single track around dams and the forested sections will provide some relief from the afternoon sun. While scouting the route whales were seen far below. The routes will not have any running water so runners need to carry their own water The long route will give the experi-enced runner a good challenge to start the Easter weekend while the shorter route will be great fun and encompass some of the highlights of the longer route. The Kiddies Farmyard Adventure Trail will be fun for parents and kids. The House of Hope in Kranshoek will be the charity choosen by An-drew Hill (Cairnbrogie) to benefit from some of the proceeds of this run. Enquiries James 0829257885

Forgiveness To forgive is an extremely Difficult thing to do. You’ve been hurt by someone. You still don’t know why. How could they have done such a thing? To see them is like taking a knife and pulling it through your heart Ripping your veins one by one, Losing yourself slowly. Forgiveness is not an easy thing to do. You have to find it in your brain To convince your heart That it’s better to forgive And let the situation turn into his-tory. But what if history repeats itself? Will you be able to forgive again? Letter via the Editor Helping our youth by support-ing our Local Talent Dear “What’s New in Plett” read-ers, Please allow me to tell you about developments affecting the youth in our area. My name is Reuben Maroyi and I want to share my passion for the develop-ment of the youth of our communities. I believe we have so many young people with talent who simply need the right guidance and support to make something special of their lives. We can not stand by and watch so many of them getting involved with crime and drugs just because they do not see any alternatives or feel hopeless about their prospects. We have to help them by inspir-ing them to believe in themselves. About 10 years ago I became very concerned about the high levels of drugs, alcohol abuse and associated crime among the youngsters in Bossiesgif. I started a football club called the Goal Fighters, hoping to attract as many young people as possible. This was soon a

great success with many players participat-ing. This led to the formation of a netball Club for girls that was also well supported. But, I also noticed that many young people were not interested in football or netball, but preferred music and this is why I formed a gospel choir, called “Asifiki” (we are going forward). This was such a great success that we soon formed two more gospel choirs, “Masiqini” (Lets be strong) and “Abapulu” (Blessed people of God). We organized monthly friendly competitions that soon become an important part of our community life, also performing at Mother’s Day and Valentines Day events and many other occasions. The next step in our community support programme was to form a Neighbourhood Watch in Bossiesgif with the help of Inspector Hartley of the CPF. By now our choirs were generously supported by people and organizations in Plett, includ-ing Erasmus Panel Beaters, Dick Stringer of Value Added Projects and David Stuart who provided us with uniforms and musical instruments. We were rewarded with a dramatic decrease in the social problems and crime, especially among the youth. Unfortunately, at this point I had to leave Plett to work on a contruction project in George. When I returned in 2008, I was disappointed to find that the energy and motivation of our proud choirs was gone and even the instruments had disappeared. Try as we might, we could not get the same enthusiasm going for gospels choirs but I found a number of the old members still passionale about their singing and in need of guidance. David Stuart and Dick Stringer again came to the rescue and donated money for new instruments which permit us to promote these individual artists. We had a breakthrough when we were successful in organizing for one of the exceptional young gospel singers to record two CDs that are available in a limited number of Musica stores. We believe in his talent and we know that he deserves to become more widely known. Promotional visits and appearances are the way to

promote him and to improve CD sales but this requires funding. His success will in-spire our other singers and will also help put promote them. Our community is known for its generosity and its willingness to support its own young talent and we would like to invite you to help us achieve our goals for these artists by supporting them in the following way: - By inviting them to perform at an event - clubs, schools, a birthday party, business function or any other form of entertainment. - We may perform at charity events for a nominal fee only. - By making a donation towards their costs. - By sponsoring their promotional travel. Our young people are desperately in need of role models - young people like them-selves who have succeeded, despite set-backs. We would like to show them what can be achieved by helping our promising young gospel singers to climb the next rung of the ladder to their success. Please help us by allowing us to demon-strate our passion and potential. As an evangelist in my church, I Continue my involvement in community and youth activities in our area to the Glory of God. Please contact me if you can offer us any help and hope: Reuben Maroyi (Cell: 073 302 6411) or Nosipho (Cell: 073 546 1247). With my thanks and blessings. Reuben Maroyi

den Handel at 083 255 3162 . Membership is open to any Harley-Davidson owner who is also willing to join the international HOG family.

HOG Rally in Plett The inaugural Garden Route Harley Owners Group (HOG) Rally will be held at The Dunes Resort, Keurboomsstrand, outside Plettenberg Bay over the weekend of March 16 to 18. The Harley-Davidson Experience Truck, with all the latest bike models, will be parked at the Market Square shopping centre in Plettenberg Bay for the duration of the weekend. The Garden Route HOG chapter was formally established on September 10, 2011 at a function held at the Turbine Hotel in Knysna. Tony Stokes was appointed as director, John Winfield as assistant director, Alan van den Handel as Secretary, and Rena Bryson as treasurer. The Garden Route HOG chapter currently has in the region of 41 members drawn from the Southern Cape, including Stilbaai, Mossel Bay, Ladismith, Oudtshoorn, George, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Jeffrey's Bay. The weekend's festivities will include a 'poker run' to favourite venues in the area on Friday afternoon, March 16. This is a self-guided ride to different destinations where each participant will receive a playing card. The person with the best poker hand at the end wins the 'jackpot'. On Saturday, March 17 the highlight of the rally is a marshalled ride through the newly restored Groot River Pass to Nature's Valley and the Bloukrans Pass to Storms River Village. Participants will gather at Marilyn's Diner for lunch, where there will be live entertainment and biker games in the street. Local bands, musicians Dave and Suzi known as Still Crazy and Port Elizabeth group Tom Boys will entertain the crowd in the evenings at the rally site (The Dunes Resort). A traditional spitbraai will take place on Saturday evening, March 17. Stokes has insisted that

rally-goers be able to stand around the spit and "fight over the choice bits"! The rally will be an intimate affair. The number of entrants will most probably be capped at 280. Rally participation is open to all Harley-Davidson owners, regardless of whether they are affiliated to a chapter or club. The Garden Route HOG chapter is keen to welcome local Harley-Davidson owners to the chapter and the rally. Local informal traders with products relevant to the biking fraternity who wish to display their wares at the rally site over the weekend, should contact John Winfield on 082 854 4931. and asked for 35 to 45% annual increases for three years in order to scrape together about R400 billion needed to build new power plants. South Africa currently produces over 90% of its electric power by burning coal.. Eskom says they will use part of the money it gets from the higher rates towards increasing its solar water geyser subsidies, from about R2,500 to about R7,000. They say almost half of the cost of a solar geyser will be covered by Eskom. About 40% of an average South African household's electricity bill goes to pay for heating the geyser. They say that with new, bigger subsidies, a household will recover its initial investment within five years, and then go on to use free hot water? Can anyone tell us if this is true? Could a solar geyser be the answer or are we a captive audience to on going, escalating price hikes? Letter via the Editor SKY HIGH PRICES … IS SOLAR THE SOLUTION? According to Eskom’s website, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approved price increases of 24.8 % for 2010/11, (+/- 41.31c per kWh); 25.8 % for 2011/12, (+/- 51.68 c per kWh; and 25.9% in 2012/13, making the average Eskom electricity price(65.06c per kWh). Many consumers are already paying double since the increase on 1 July 2011. The latest is that a 35% increase is on the cards! Where will it end? We trusted Eskom, which generates about 95% of our electricity. They have been battling with electricity shortages since 2008, but its problems date a decade earlier and are due to lack of investment in new capacities and in updating the existing power stations. Last year, Eskom increased its tariffs by 31 %

Letter from the Ratepayers Association Mr. Duppie Du Plessis Acting Municipal Manager Bitou Municipality - Plettenberg Bay Dear Duppie, On Behalf of the Plettenberg Bay Ratepayers Association, we would like to thank you for the huge contribution you made to turning around Bitou Municipality during the seven months you were here, and

are very sorry you are leaving us at the end of February 2012. As ratepayers, we appreciate you putting the brakes on the wasteful spending of our rates and taxes in Plettenberg Bay. Not only were you able to drastically cut expenses, develop a realistic and balanced budget, obtain a R30 million municipal loan, but you oversaw the Revenue Enhancement team from Pricewaterhouse Coopers who have, we believe, so far recouped R5 million from property owners and developers who were not paying their fare share. And I believe we were also the first town in the Western Cape to complete its Adjustments Budgets; no small task considering the shocking shortfall in revenue which had been hidden in the totally unrealistic budget left by the former Chief Financial Officer. We also appreciate your work and interest to: bringing in Dimension Data to avert an IT meltdown, - Using your contacts in Province to fund an Organization Redesign project, at no charge to our ratepayers, which will ensure an efficient and cost effective administration, reduce the bloated payroll by millions and ensure that employees have an adequate skills set, - Forcing the repair of prolific potholes around our communities, - Overseeing the imminent revival of our airport, - Initiating the solution of the waste removal problems through the Dept of Environmental Affairs and

Planning - Bringing in competent people and removing many of the corrupt officials, - And a myriad of other things we are not even aware of. Your strong leadership will leave a long-lasting effect, and the ratepayers of Plett greatly respect and appreciate all you have done. We wish you every success in your new position with Overberg Municipality and hope you will come back and visit us often. Kind regards, Christo Vlok Chairman of the Plettenberg Bay Ratepayers Assoc. Rare Bird spotted in Plett Major excitement was the news that a SOOTY FALCON was spotted last weekend in the Plettenberg Bay area. The bird was apparently seen on the Saturday morning for the first time, but remained unconfirmed at that point. Local birders were alerted of it and were out there at first light on Sunday when they were able to confirm the identification. This is the first confirmed record for the Western Cape with historical records from just east of Port Elizabeth being the previous most westerly records. Please be aware that the bird is on private property at the Emily Moon River Lodge and Restaurant. It apparently roosts in a large dead Pine tree in the parking area and then leaves from here on its feeding forays every morning at around 6am. Those of you that are wanting to go and see it are asked to please make contact with the Hotel Manager, Adri Hurter, at 044 533 2982 beforehand to arrange permission to access the property. Oriented Birds Newsflash Greeting to the community, at last we managed to come home and it was so exciting to see the entire community in numbers greeting the boys, you guys were the winner on the day and what excites me most is the fact that everyone was there to witness what I have been updat-ing you - week in week out. Today I will let the community decide, how we played. All I can say is when we lose, we lose as a team and we should not point fingers to individual players. I spoke to the Ajax coaching staff after the game and they were very impressed about our team. We introduced a young team against Ajax and our technical team were so impressed about the talent they showcased. What I’m implying here is that, as difficult it is to play in this league but it is also an open door to success for our players. We are playing Jomo Power on Friday 9th March in Cape Town @ 20H00. Wish u all the blessings boys and keep that head up. Thanx again to our supporters and don’t give up yet. Love ya’ll and stay positive. Cheers for now. We as the Chamber must do our best to avoid that this happens again. Please note that communication should not be limited to these meetings - if there are any issues please contact us. To summarize, it is important to

We decided to categorize these issues. Municipality, Police and Security, Tourism, Code of Conduct General Care of Members We have appointed specific committee members to deal with these issues. It is our intention to give you feedback on a regular basis. It’s very important that we support each other and to stay positive about Plettenberg Bay and it is heartening to note that some members have already contacted us with some good suggestions and offering support. Here are some issues that were raised at the meeting People were treated in an unfriendly manner at shops. We must constantly remind our-selves that Tourism is the lifeblood of Plett. We must go out of our way to make local and international tourists feel at home and welcome. Support local: Please we need to try support local and keep as many people in Plett. night will almost inevitably attract attention from the police for this reason as it is common practice for drug purchases to take place under those circumstances. We have a significant drug problem in the area and the police are constantly urged to do something about it. We, as members of the public, need to understand this and cooperate. Don’t get me wrong, I do not condone the unnecessary pointing of weapons or any other unsatisfactory behaviour by the police and will deal with the issue if given sufficient detail, but simply wish to make the point that very often people respond to us in a similar way as we treat them. Thank you for referring the matters to me. I will need at least dates and times (I have the time of the one incident) to deal with the 2 matters referred to me. Perhaps you could publish this e-mail in order to encourage people in our area to adopt the most constructive approach. Letter via the Editor in response to complaints re police We referred the last 2 letters re police behaviour to the Community policing forum and received the following reply from the chairman, Bruce Richardson: It is very much part of the function of the Community Police Forum to address these issues and our station commander is very willing to follow up and deal with these incidents but we need the complainants to provide adequate details in order that an effective follow up can be carried out. Rather than using language such as “last night” or “on Sunday evening”, which by the time the letter is published may be an indeterminate date, would those subject to unsatisfactory police behaviour rather state “on Sunday evening the 5th February at approximately 8.45pm”or whatever the detail may have been. The rank and name of the police officer would naturally assist and members of the public are entitled to this information but if the person concerned feels uncomfortable in asking for this information, take the registration number of the vehicle, note the rank of the police officer or any other information that may assist in identifying the culprit. When general information is published, it is inclined to bring the entire very hard working police force into disrepute as opposed to achieving the desired result and that is bringing the perpetrators to book. It would also be preferable if these incidents were to be forwarded directly to me on my e-mail address [email protected] so that I am able to react timeously and ask any questions that need to be asked to assist in identifying the police officer/s concerned. Last but certainly not least, I would ask that members of the public co-operate with the police and are polite in their dealings with the police. If one adopts such an approach, it is highly unlikely that the officer concerned will simply get aggressive and unpleasant. Our police officers have a very difficult job to do and work long and testing hours in what are often frustrating and dangerous circumstances and need our understanding and cooperation if we wish them to deal effectively with crime in our area. The incident at the exit of Kwanokatula was almost certainly a search for drugs. Persons from Sector 1 exiting Kwano’s at that time of

So iets was nog nooit in Kranshoek aangebied nie.
