Gratitude to Cansa Sisters of Plettenberg Bay Mervyn Glassom and his family would like to thank Pat Henderson, Dee Minnikin and June Milburn-Pyle, for their constant support, assistance and care that was offered with such love and compassion and for their prayers for my very brave wife Pat, who passed away on19 January. It is rare to find someone who is compassionate, selfless and altruistic. It is even rarer to find three people who have these qualities in a small community like Plettenberg Bay, and yet this small town has been blessed with three such remarkable women, Sisters Pat, Dee and June who devote themselves to supporting and visiting cancer patients and their families on a daily basis. Pat Glassom was diagnosed with cancer almost four years ago. In the early stage of her illness she was visited by Pat, Dee and June on a weekly basis and she took comfort in the counseling and support that they offered. Over time the relationship between Pat and the Sisters shifted to a friendship and a close bond was established

between them. Pat looked forward to their visits and found that she could speak freely and discuss anything with them. Her husband and children found comfort in their constant support, reassurance and availability to discuss questions or allay concerns. They became very special to the entire family. As her illness progressed Sisters Pat, Dee and June visited more frequently and made themselves available to Pat Glassom and her family at any time that they were needed. Items that Pat required in order to make her more comfortable were sourced and supplied by them. Medications were monitored and administered by them, making it possible for Pat, as promised, to spend her last days and hours in her own home. To quote the Dali Lama “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.”

The Hub of Harkerville Have you, like me, re-fuelled at Sasol enroute to Knysna and thought ‘I really must pop in at that little yellow shop/restaurant’. I finally did and was pleasantly sur-prised by the old fashioned atmos-phere, friendliness and food. The Coral Breeze Café, aptly named for the biggest and oldest Coral Tree in the region, which stands next to the café, is run by . Alida. She and her husband Lukas, who runs the Sasol garage next door, came from the Lowveld (Nelspruit) a year ago. In the Lowveld, pancakes are very popular, so Alida knows how to make and serve them and decided to bring her special brand of Pancakes to Plett! If you try one you’ll definitely be back! There is a mouth-watering selection of

both savoury and sweet pancakes and the kiddies section brings back happy sticky memories. The breakfasts on offer are also great - from a traditional breakfast with Boerewors to Omelettes and a healthy alternative too. Fish and Chips is a lunchtime favourite. Inside the restaurant with its quaint décor, there is a selection of home made preserves, jams, biscuits and rusks. The walls have local art for sale and there is also lovely furni-ture made from indigenous wood. Alida would like to expand the se-lection of local ware on offer and invites all local artists and crafters to chat to her to display their products. Monkeyland and Birds of Eden add another sanctuary

MEDIA RELEASE Tony Blignaut, the Chief Executive Office and founder of both Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, said in a press release today; “In keeping with our policy of maintaining world class sanctuaries, Primates Resort (Pty) Ltd which trades as the Monkeyland and Birds of Eden Sanctuaries in Plettenberg Bay, has, through its majority controlled subsidiary Welisa Holdings (Pty) Ltd, acquired the sanctuary known as Jukani which currently operates out of Mossel Bay. “

“We have been quietly monitoring the operation of Jukani and their work ethics ever since they first announced their intention to relocate to The Crags in 2009. We have been very impressed with the high stan-dards of hygiene, dedication and animal care.”

This acquisition is within the framework of our medium and long term goal of maintaining world class sanctuaries, and we are very happy to associate our name with the Jukani brand, as we were when we associated our name with Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic with the establishment of The Lemur Sanctuary on Mosquito Island in the Caribbean.

In terms of this acquisition we took control of the sanctuary on the 1st February 2012, and in doing so we have also taken over the process that is already in progress for the sanctuaries relocation to The Crags. We believe that Jukani will be as popular as our other sanctuaries in The Crags, which combined, currently employ 56 staff.”

Tony Blignaut went on to say; “A well located Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, which is world class, will attract tens of thousands of new visitors to Plet-tenberg Bay and The Crags in particular. The ramifications associated with the employment, procurement and the spin off into the broader local economy created by additional visitors cannot be over em-phasized.”

Asked if he thought Jukani would be in competition to any other local products Tony said “No not really Jukani offers a totally different experience to any other product in the Western Cape, unlike other predator experiences, at Jukani there are no walking with the animals, petting and or even photographic sessions with the animals, it is ‘hands off’ just like our other sanctuaries.”

Asked about the potential negative impacts the sanctuary could have on the environment, he said “As sanctuary’s go, Jukani will require very little in the way of demand on natural resources, and will also have virtu-ally no impact, any potential impacts and visitor impacts will be properly managed as we do at our other sanctuaries.”

Well Done Plett Security For the past week Plett Security have been working closely with crime intelligence and the local Police, after information was received from one of our security guards of a planned robbery, that will take place in the Industrial area, at a valued Plett security client. With the assistance of the company security measures were put in place. On Friday morning the suspect was ready and as he approached the target, he was engaged by Plett Security. The suspect was then quickly manhandled, and the threat neutralized with rapid response from the members of the PBCPA and the SAPS. It was found that one suspect is a member of the defence force stationed in Mosselbay. The other two suspects are known to be robbers. Tourism Advisory Forum Meetings

Department: Strategic Services The Department wishes to liaise with all role-players in the tourism and related businesses on tourism matters in the Bitou Municipality. Tourism is identified as one of the main economic drivers in the area.

Tourism is also a wide ranging field with a variety of activities, uses, interest groups and beneficiaries. The Department would like to engage with all individuals and parties with an interest in tourism to better understand their needs and to provide them with opportunities to comment and give input in the tourism operations. To this end, regular monthly meetings will be held in various localities in the Bitou area, where all role-players may attend and participate in the discussion of tourism matters. Notice is hereby given of the first Tourism Advisory Forum Meeting. Its main aim is to discuss the way forward for tourism in Bitou. All interested individuals and stakeholders from the different communities and tourism businesses in Bitou are invited to join in the discussion and debate, amongst others for the development of an all inclusive tourism strategy for the Bitou area. The agenda will be made available at the meeting and will include the following: The marketing strategy for tourism in Bitou. Attendance at Indaba 2012 Destination Marketing / Advertising. Community tourism development. Tourism office operational plan. The first meeting will be held in Kranshoek on Wednesday, 15 February 2012, at the Kranshoek Multipurpose Centre, starting at 18h00. Notice of subsequent meetings will follow. Meetings will be held monthly, on the first Wednesday of the month. The venues will change, to create opportunities for all people to attend. See you there! Mark Sing Key - Supersport reports Kevin Evans (Nedbank 360Life) fended off strong challenges from Jacques Rossouw (FedGroup-Itec Connect) and the waterlogged course itself to take his second win in the 80km Extreme mountain bike race at Addo just outside Port Elizabeth on Saturday. Evans, who last won the mountain biking segment of The Herald VW Cycle Tour in 2009, outsprinted Rossouw as he entered the fields of the Addo Polo Club to take the title (3:10:17) two seconds ahead of his rival (3:10:19). His teammate James Reid completed the podium (3:14:39). Kevin set a fast tempo early in the race and succeeded in splitting the large bunch on the first hill. He said he had been “pleasantly surprised” at his team’s early season form, especially that of 19-year-old Reid. Absent from his squad was regular partner David

George, who missed the race due to a cancelled flight. “I believe the organisers had a fantastic track set out, which in these conditions we couldn’t do, but I’m sure we’ll be back next year to ride the proper course.” BMC’s Candice Neethling won the women’s race by a comfortable margin (4:06:35) ahead of the Merrell duo Heidi Koen (4:26:12) and Andrea von Holdt (4:41:37). First, we do a bit of matchmaking. Before transfusion, and after rigorous processing at the blood bank, donor and recipient blood must be matched according to their respective types. From there, constituents are used as follows: - Red blood cells are used to replace losses as a result of accidents, trauma, childbirth and surgery, as well as for burn victims. They are also essential in the treatment of various kinds of anaemia linked to cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as sickle cell anaemia. These essential cells must be used within 42 days of donation if fresh, but can also be frozen for longer periods. - Plasma is the liquid component of blood that contains essential nutrients and proteins. It is used primarily as a source for clotting factors, the replacement of blood volume and the production of albumin, a protein used to treat severe shock, burns and blood loss. Fresh frozen plasma has a shelf life of one year and is used during cardiac surgery and childbirth. - Cryoprecipitate is a small portion of plasma that is harvested using a freeze-thaw process. It contains factors to help blood clot and is used primarily as a source of clotting factor VIII for patients with classic haemophilia. - Stabilised human serum is used for the treatment of burn wounds and hypovolaemia (decreased blood volume). - Platelets help blood clot and are used to treat patients with bone marrow production problems, and in the treatment of illnesses such as leukaemia. Platelets must be harvested within eight hours of donation and are stored at room temperature in a gently agitated state so as to be functional when transfused. Bitou CVC - Snippets for the week We are still hard at work trying to bring down the numbers of unspayed female dogs wandering the streets, many of them in heat and followed by a group of males. There are also numerous litters of puppies we are keeping tabs on to ensure that they are being properly fed by the mother dog, and that they have adequate shelter from the weather. There are always cases where animals are neglected and basically left to fend for themselves but we are happy to report that there are just as many pet owners who love their dogs and cats and want to do the best for them. Kranshoek seems to have had a cat population explosion in recent weeks and we are focusing on spaying as many female cats as possible. The many kittens born recently are very similar in colouring so we are on the lookout for an orange tom in the area, as he obviously has been very busy visit-ing the ladies! Conservation Corner On Wednesday last week the NSRI of Plett we asked to assist in re-floating a striped dolphin that had beached itself. The beach walkers that were on the scene tried several times but it just wouldn’t go back out to sea. After several attempts from the beach, the fella’s decided to take the dolphin out to sea on one of their rescue crafts. After a few tender moments, the animal started to swim well on its own and swam away. The following Sunday, we believe the same animal washed up near Castle Rocks at Brenton on Sea in Knysna and was assisted by a local physician and his girlfriend. ORCA was contacted on Monday to coordinate the continued rescue operation and the local authorities were contacted to see if they could lend assistance. Later that day it was determined by the local authorities and the local marine specialists decided it would be in the best interest of the animal to end its suffering. ORCA was given permission by the marine specialists to conduct the dissection to allow an opportunity to determine what the cause of death of the animals was. Oriented Birds Newsfeed Good day ma-obies, it’s an honour and privilege to be part of this family. We Might not be financially powerful but we are a loving and caring family. We are losing but we are not losers; some are leading but they are not champions. After every thunders, lightenings and strong storms, there comes a rainbow. Coming to last week fixture disorder, due to the construction going on our home ground, we were forced to shift our home game to Cape Town. We have alternative ground which is Piesang Rugby Field but according to SAFA rules which we abide by; should we change our venue to the alternative one for one game, we shall play all our remaining games there and it will be the problem for us and our support base as we must travel to Piesang. So in three weeks time our field will be in good conditions. This week we are playing in Downberg (Cape Town) against Hanover Park on Sunday @ 15H00 and this will be our last game in first round. Then the first two games of second round are also away games which means we will play home on the 3rd of March against Ajax Cape Town. As most of you know this family has had to endure a lot of hardship in the last year with both Father and son losing a leg. Wesley was hit by a car in Stellenbosch and is still in Hospital at Tygerberg. His leg was amputated to the hip. Russell lost his leg under the knee and according to Doctors the battle is on to try and save the other one. Terry is very well known by patrons of Moby Dicks where she was employed. She has had to resign to look after Russell.
