EIBC in Electromagnetics
• Many electromagnetic models need to include very small gaps between or within materials
– Intentional
• Usually to interrupt eddy current paths
• Segmented permanent magnets in electrical machines
– Unintentional
• Construction of transformers from E-core and closing “bar”
– Damage
• NDT probes to detect small cracks caused by fatigue etc.
• For many applications , it is sufficient to consider the gap as infinitely thin with appropriate characteristics
– Current cannot flow normally across the gap
– Tangential components of magnetic field on the gap face are continuous
• The boundary condition is available in:
– TOSCA current flow (not with lossy dielectrics)
– ELEKTRA
– CARMEN
– DEMAG

TIBC in Thermal
• The thermal software also has a new boundary condition
• There is often poor contact between materials that are next to each other which inhibit flow of heat from one component to another
– Usually called contact conductance or contact resistance
• A similar boundary condition to the Electric insulator has been introduced for TEMPO and QUENCH
– This allows heat to cross normally but produces a temperature jump across the boundary condition face

Static Stress Solver
• Fully Anisotropic Materials
– upper triangle of the elasticity matrix, sometimes called the elastic modulus tensor or the material stiffness matrix. The upper triangle has 21 terms.
• General Expansion integrals
– General expansion integrals provide a way of defining a pre-existing strain on a model. This can be calculated from any fields stored in the database.
• Magnetostriction can be calculated as a function of B.
• Electrostriction can be calculated as a function of D and E.
• Example:
– TOSCA to calculate B, then imported into STRESS/ST model.
• Magnetostrictive expansion given by a user defined function of B.

SCALA Volume Plasma Emitter
• New licensed feature
• Uses Self-consistent plasma boundary method to model low density magnetised plasmas:
• determines the plasma boundary surface shape, together with the ion and electron currents that are consistent with the potential distribution caused by the space charge in the particle flows outside the plasma volume.
• Ions are not explicitly represented inside the plasma volume and the plasma is assumed to be quasi-neutral.
• The volume plasma emitter is normally used as part of closed cycle of linked secondary emitters. For example, a model will contain
– a volume plasma emitter that represents ionisation of argon gas by energetic electrons;
– a secondary surface emitter that creates electrons from colliding argon ions;
– a Volume backscatter emitter to model loss of energetic electrons.

Machines Environments – 2D
• Current Density Input
– During preliminary design, users are now able to input currents in windings using a user defined maximum realistic current density (due to thermal constraints) and then evaluate the winding current (and voltage in some simulations). This development requires the user to be able to enter the current density and the fill factor. This option is available in PM_DC_ST and PM_AC_ST analyses.
• Average Torque
– The average torque is calculated by integration over the period and presented in the summary dialog for PM_RM and PM_AC_ST analyses.
• Active Mass
– The active mass of the machine is evaluated based on the user defined material density. The mass calculations are added for brushless PM machines and switch reluctance machines. The results are presented in the summary dialog. The mass evaluations (#mass_rotor and #mass_stator) can be used as constraints for the optimizer run.
• Average Flux densities in Stator & Rotor
– The purpose of this is to determine if material is being underused or, worse, subject to severe saturation. Average flux density is calculated for the machine for different rotor positions. Then the flux density plot for the maximum average flux density case is saved in the results folder.
