More about tables

• Excel support tips and tricksThe first non-empty row in an Excel worksheet or named range of cells is treated as containing the field names for the data in the columns below it.

More about tables

• Excel support tips and tricksIn cases that Excel files contain titles and other information, which means that the first non-empty row in the file is not the one containing the field names for the data you want to access, you can define a named range in Excel which reference the data you want to treat as rows and columns of a table.

Name for the range

• Calculating Geometry Calculating Geometry opens a dialog to calculate the field to be the area, length, perimeter, x location, y location, x centroid, or y centroid of the features in the layer.

You might have different options here depending on your layer type.

Tips: • If you are calculating into a

text field, you can choose to add a units abbreviation to the calculation.

• You can use the Calculate Geometry dialog box to update the area, length, or perimeter of shapefile features, since these properties are not automatically updated when you edit features in shapefiles.

• Reasons the Field Calculator might be disabled

If you find that the Field Calculator or Calculate Geometry commands are disabled when you right-click a field, here are some things to check:

• You right-clicked a field that is managed by ArcGIS and therefore cannot be edited manually. These include the ObjectID (FID) field; the Shape_Length and Shape_Area fields for a geodatabase feature class;

• The table's data source is read-only, write access can't be established to the folder or geodatabase

Layer Enhancement

• A new command called Zoom to Make Visible has been added to the context menu you get if you right-click a layer in ArcMap.

Layer enhancement

• New Flicker command

The new Flicker command in the Effects toolbar in ArcMap automatically flickers the layer chosen in the layer dropdown list on and off using the time interval specified in milliseconds in the control next to it:

Flicker is particularly useful for temporal change detection, data quality comparison and other analysis where you want see small differences between very similar looking layers.

Cartographic representations

• ArcGIS 9.2 introduces a new way to symbolize features using representations.

• Representations can be created and edited with an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. Representations can be displayed using any license level.

Symbol layer Representation

Tips: Data types support representation:• Any point, line, or polygon feature class in a personal, file, or ArcSDE geodatabase can support representations.• The geodatabase must be upgraded to ArcGIS 9.2 prior to creating representations.

Cartographic representation

• With representation you can change the geometry of the feature while keep its underlying data source untouched.

A feature class representation consists of one or more representation rules ;

Representation rules are made up of symbol layers and optional geometric effects.

What’s behind for representation

• How is Representation stored in Geodatabase?

Representations are a property of a feature class. Representations are implemented as a geodatabase workspace extension, and managed by the geodatabase.

Two fields are added to a feature class when a representation is created:• The RuleID field stores a reference to the representation rule for each feature. The representation rules themselves are stored within the geodatabase system tables. • The Override field stores feature-specific overrides to the representation rules.

Understanding cartographic representation

Representations are managed in ArcCatalog through the Representations tab on the Feature Class Properties dialog box.

All representations

associated with the feature class are listed along with buttons to create, remove, or rename them.

Online services

• New built-in routing & driving directions capabilities

Tip: Remember that performing routing with the new Find Route dialog doesn't demand that your map contain any particular layer representing streets or transportation. Routing services are self-contained which means you can add routes to any map and get driving directions, irrespective of what data is represented in your map.

Online services

• Find Nearby Places Find Nearby Places lets you find different types of places near any location on your map. The places you can find are provided by several free web services, including a World Cities service and a more detailed USA Cities service.

ArcWeb Services subscriber will have access to specialized premium place services in this dialog, including business, demographic, and traffic information.

Online services

• ArcGIS Online

Please attend the “Using Internet with ArcGIS Online Services” session or go to Dr’s Office Thursday and Friday to learn more.
