Launch of the Project: Promoting the conservation of seabirds in Cabo Verde
Biosfera 1 will be partner in the implementation of a project
coordinated by BirdLife International with the generous funding from
the MAVA Foundation. On September 20, in the city of Praia, was
launched the project that aims to articulate the various actors to
build a solid base of knowledge about Cabo Verde’s seabirds. It aims
to identify important areas of distribution, feeding, nesting of birds
and their interaction with fisheries in order to mitigate future threats
at sea. At the end of the project, which lasts 3 years, all information
collected is to be used to update an action plan for the conservation
of seabirds.

Project of Restoration of the Marine Reserve of Santa Luzia and Islets Branco and Raso.
Biosfera 1, in close collaboration with the National Directorate for the
Environment (DNA) and partnerships with SPEA (Portuguese Society for the
Study of Birds) and RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of the Bird),
started in March 2017 the project of Restoration of the Marine Reserve of
Santa Luzia and islets. . This project, which also has the financial support of
the MAVA Foundation, has as its main objective the implementation of the
management plan for the marine reserve and the restoration of its natural
values. In this sense in over 36 months, actions will be developed around 4
main axes:
- Control of invasive species (eg rats);
- Monitoring andmonitoring of fauna;
- Contribute to the initiation of the inspection plan of the Marine
Reserve;
- Reintroduction of native species;

2 of the 10 most wanted ships by Interpol for illegal fishing are anchored in Porto Grande!
Biosfera 1 alerted authorities, at the request of Sea Shepherd Global (SSG)
to the presence of two of the ten boats most wanted by Interpol for illegal
fishing that wereanchored in PortoGrandede SãoVicente.
The most unusual thing is that these same boats were seized by Cape
Verdean authorities in 2015 and returned in 2017 to anchor in Porto
Grande completely decharacterized, repainted and flagged from other
countries. The ship Yongding, dubbed Atlantic Wind, now displays the flag
of the Republic of Tanzania, while Songhua was renamed Pescacisne 2 and
has the flag of Chile.
The president of Biosphere I states that the SSG fears that the boats will
return to activity again, since they belong to a Spanish company, which has
never been condemned in court for similar cases.

José Melo, one of the founders of Biosfera 1 is MAN OF THE YEAR!
Since 2006, José Melo has defended and worked for the protection of the
environment and the conservation of biodiversity in Cape Verde. His
important work as an environmental activist was finally recognized by the
Cape Verdean society and earned him the "Man of the Year" award at the
Gala Somos Cabo Verde held by CV Telecom.
According to José Melo: "It is a trophy that does not have a monetary
value, but of the heart. This is the right moment to ask all the Cape
Verdeans in the country and the emigrants residing here to start sowing a
little of whatwe stand for "
He also said that it is necessary that the rulers take more seriously the
question of the preservation of the marine resources and seas of the
archipelago.
According to the organization, the gala intends to honour several figures,
associations and groups that have contributed to the development of Cape
Verde. It is an initiative of recognition, an award of prizes, but also a
ceremony of many emotions, of joys, of passing positive messages, and
awarding the best of Cape Verde: its people!

More than 30 individuals of the species Sula sula in Raso Islet
This year, a new species of Booby brought more color to Raso Islet! On its
cliffs, the showy red feet of the red-footed booby (Sula sula) did not go
unnoticed by the technicians of Biosfera 1 who counted 30 to 40
individuals. Whoever accompanies our Facebook page, it should be
remembered that in 2016 we announced the arrival of 1 individual of Red-
footed bobby to Raso. Apparently they seem to like the islet, because the
population has increased this year, living peacefully with the resident
species, the Brownbooby (Sula leucogaster).
These new residents brought with them several puzzles ... Where will they
come from? What brought them to Raso? Are they here to stay or not? Will
they compete with the Brown-booby?
Biosfera 1 will attempt to answer someof these questions.

"There are mice everywhere!"
The ones who say this, are the volunteers and field technicians of the
Santa Luzia camp. This year the population of mice (Mus musculus) has
invaded the island of Santa Luzia and can be seen inside the tents, in the
dunes and even next to the beaches. The bloom of these small mice still
have no apparent explanation given that, contrary to what many people
think the cats (also introduced) have not yet been removed from the
island. It is believed that this may only be a fluctuation in its life cycle.
Among the mice, the volunteers continue to follow and monitor the sea
turtles, Caretta caretta, and already haveabout 1000 nests counted.
