What's New at Treehaven What's New at Treehaven Scott Johnson, Treehaven Director 2018 has been a year of exciting changes and updates. Last winter, we welcomed several new staff members. Brian Gibbs joined the Treehaven team as our new Program Manager. He brings a wealth of experience from a decade of working as a full time naturalist in Iowa and as a park ranger in Glacier National Park and Effigy Mounds National Monument. Janet Walsh joined the kitchen team as a new full time, year round cook. She comes to us from working food service at a school for many years. The kitchen welcomed another new staff member in April, Zack Brussewitz. Zack served in the Navy and brings his expertise in cooking to the team. Our new 9000 square foot garden entered its first year. The garden includes 66 raised beds and is on a 10 year organic rotation. In addition to providing vegetables to the kitchen, the garden also functions as an integral teaching tool for our sustainability-based education programs. We are also excited to report that we received a $28,950 grant from the UW- Stevens Point student funded “Green Fund” as part of a new 19.84 kilowatt solar array that will be installed on the roof of Birch Lodge in spring 2019. The array is projected to provide all electrical needs for both Ed Okray Aspen and Birch Lodges, plus feed a little extra back into the grid. Interest from the Treehaven Endowment matched the $28,950 to make this sustainability project happen. Yearly interest from the Treehaven Endowment has been used to fund special projects at Treehaven, including three new water bottle fillers, four AED units, and four weekends of lodging for students running a ruffed grouse research project here.
