Proudly serving the Residents of Hampton Roads. November 2017

What’s Inside?

Upcoming Events Pg. 2 Community News Pg. 3 Just for Fun Pg. 6

November is Military Appreciation Month. It is a time to show our thanks for

the sacrifices our service members and their families make.

To Our Families: Our Lincoln families are resilient, flexible, strong, loyal and

committed to our military. Lincoln understands that, “Every Mission Begins at

Home.” You are the backbone of each mission and the fuel that drives each

heart.

To Our Service Members: You are America’s protectors. You sacrifice

milestones, holidays and time with loved ones to make America a great and

safe nation to raise our families in. You stand as a beacon of courage, pillar of

resolve and role model for our future generations.

In addition to thanking our military families, November is a time to thank our

Nation’s Veterans. Veterans Day honors ALL American Veterans, both living

and those no longer with us. November 11th of each year is a day that we

ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have

made to keep our country free.

As you may be gearing up to decorate for the upcoming holiday season, if you have children or pets at home it is important to keep the following tips in mind: Kids and pets are curious and will want to play

with the ornaments on the tree. Move the ornaments that are breakable or have metal hooks to the top of the tree. That makes room for the ones that are safe for young kids and pets at the bottom.

Natural trees look beautiful and smell great, but if they are not watered regularly, needles can dry out and pose a potential fire hazard. Make sure your tree has plenty of water by checking it regularly.

Lights are one of the best parts of holiday decorating. Take a look at the ones on your tree and around your home for exposed or frayed wires, loose connections or broken sockets.

It’s time to start preparing for the holidays that are quickly approaching! Did you know that Americans throw away 35% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve than other times of the year? Here are some tips to incorporate sustainability into your holiday celebrations: Eat sustainable food and avoid disposable containers and extra packaging.

Research sustainable food choices and buy locally if possible. Buy snacks and beverages in bulk to avoid extra packaging. Don’t serve food with disposable utensils, plates, and glasses.

Decorate with items that are energy-efficient and durable. Decorate with energy efficient LED strings and plug into a timer to save electricity. Decorate creatively by making table and home décor from natural materials in your yard or items you

already own. Buy a living tree that you can keep as a houseplant after the holidays.

Use fewer resources when you shop, give, and wrap presents. Shop online or use reusable shopping bags on shopping trips. Support your local economy by buying from local merchants, craft shows, or antique shops. Make your own gifts and gift wrap. Use creative, recyclable material for gift wrap; such as, scarves,

fabrics, old maps, and reusable tins.

Many restaurants in the Hampton Roads area offer Veterans Day Discounts and free meals for service members. Tips Before Heading Out: Review the official site information and rules

before heading out. Many websites are listing previous year’s promotions that are no longer available.

Be sure to bring proof of military service, uniform photos or be in uniform. Proof of military service varies by company.

Pay attention to the dates of the Veterans Day offer as some offers are for Veterans Day specifically, while others span a range of dates.

Many of the restaurant meals are for dine in only. Many of these promotions include small print that

says, “participating locations only.” Unfortunately, individual franchises may choose not to participate. Fortunately, some franchises participate even if the corporate company does not.

Call ahead if you are unsure of anything. Websites such as, www.militarybenefits.info, offer

a great complied list that details many of the opportunities available for service members on Veterans Day.

On Saturday, November 11th, The Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organization hosts its annual Veterans Day Parade beginning at 9am on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Over 700 teenage daughters of service members across Hampton Roads received a full beauty package in preparation for Homecoming season on October 7th courtesy of the USO’s “Operation: That’s My Dress” hosted at the Sandler Center. Each girl received a dress courtesy of designer Sherri Hill valued from $550-$2,500 each. The surprises didn’t stop there. Before selecting their dress, attendees were treated to a performance by the USO show troupe as well as a fashion show by 2018 Miss USA contestants where they modeled a sample of the dresses that they would later help the girls choose from. To close out the afternoon of pampering, each girl received a free hair styling, makeup consultation and jewelry to take home. It was an event that would make even Cinderella envious.
