Mrs. Enoch Armock and daughter, Rosemarie. who left last week for a Canadan ti Ip wrote from Mackinaw City that it is so lovely there that they remained for several days before trav- eling farther north. More than enough money was raised Sunday morning at the Baptist Church to cover the painting of the parsonage and the church. Mrs. Beatrice Johnson cf Grand Rapids made several calls on friends in Sparta Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Carr were guests last week of Mrs. L. W. W*:lch at her Highland Park cottage. Among those from out-of-town who attended the funeral of t^eir aunt, Mrs. Ed Bradford, which was held Sun- day, were Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Thomp- son of Indianapolis; Clyde Batterson of Harvard. Illinois, and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Batterson of Chicago. The W. W. G. Girls will enjoy a house party at the Boy Scout Camp from July 20 to 25. Sumner I. Scott has returned to Norfolk. Va., to the naval training sta- tion after a two weeks' vacation at the home of his parents. Mr. and Mrs. S. Scott of Sparta, IJoute 2. Howard Bettes, local Allls Chalmers dealer, recently sold one of the largest Model-A, 4-plow tractors in production today to Lee Parks, Sand Lake. It ls a wheel type tractor and Mr. Bettes states that he had the honor of selling the first one ln Michigan. Miss Gladys Black spent Sunday with her sister, Mrs. George Fenske in Grand Rapids. Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Scott, route 2, announce the engagement of their daughter. Hazel May. to Carl A. Ham- merstrum, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hammerstrum of Sparta, route 3. The marriage will take place in the fall. The Rev. and Mrs. J. K. Hoffmaster spent Saturday and Sunday ln Detroit, where Hoffmaster preached Sunday for Dr. Becker at Calvary Methodist Church, in the afternoon he spoke at Children's Village, and ln the evening at Calvary Tabernacle. The Spurta Free Methodist church society will hold its fourth quarterly meeting of the conference year July 16 to 18. The Rev. J. A Hudnutt of Beldlng will be in charge of all services. Anyone interested ls eligible. • • • A noted man wisely remarksd that ln certain foreign countries when na- tional affairs are not handled to suit them, the people sit up and holler right out loud. Possibly the time will come when Americans will learn to squeal when their toes are stepped on and cease to be trustfully credulous. Through this inferno-like heat that has been slraltng for more than a week we are advised as to how to keep cool: Take it easy. Don't rush around. Wear a hat out 'n the sun. Wear cool, loose fitting clothes. Get plenty of rest and sleep. Eat moderately. Drink plenty of cool, not ice cold liquids. Exercise moderately. Take frequent tepid baths. Avoid large meetings. (No reference was made as to the amount of work one should do!)
