Aden Bowman Newsletter-December 2017 2

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As December quickly approaches I hope your family is healthy and looking forward to the holiday season. We have lots to be proud of and we anticipate a strong finish to the first semester. It has been a great year so far filled with many highlights. Our Senior Drama Production Snapshots was highly successful and entertaining with three performances in late November. Aden Bowman’s annual Winter Music Concert is on Sunday, December 3 with the band and choir groups having a chance to showcase their talents. We have impressive talent at Bowman! The transition to winter sports are now under way with basketball, cheerleading, curling and wrestling seasons now taking the main stage. Aden Bowman will once again co-host games for the Bowlt Classic basketball tournament. Both our senior teams will play against the top Saskatchewan teams and will have the opportunity to play in front of the student body on Friday, December 1. Our students have completed the on-line “OurSchool” student survey as a part of our on-going school improvement plan. The responses will provide data about academic and social aspects of school life as well as help us better support our students. Aden Bowman continues to value striving to be a more Nutrition Positive school. Steps have been taken to limit the amount of sugar that is consumed by students. We are also educating and encouraging our students to be more environmentally responsible by utilising the paper, cans and bottle recycling bins. As the calendar year comes to an end, I am extremely proud of the students and staff of Aden Bowman as they strive for excellence in and out of the classroom. The commitment to raise aware-ness of and donate to charities is especially evident through the SRC organised Movember (cancer awareness for men) fundraising campaign. Thanks to Mr. Serblowski, Mr. Scott, Mr. Speir and Mr. Moen for growing the facial hair in support of this important cause. A reminder that the final day of classes before Christmas will be on Friday, December 22. Students will return to school on Monday, January 8 for 2 weeks of classes before Final Assessment week begins on Monday, January 22, 2018. Final Assessment week will look a little different this year. Assessments will be now be a minimum of 90 minutes (9:00 – 10:30 AM) and teachers will be available to students for extra support the rest of the school day. I hope everyone is able to take some time over the holiday break to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. On behalf of the Aden Bowman staff, Ms. Ross and I wish all members of our school community a safe and happy holiday season. Take care. Paul Humbert Principal

ADEN BOWMAN MUSIC UPDATE It has been a great first semester in the music department! The senior jazz studies class performed at Nutana Collegiate for the SPSD Roast fundraiser and the senior jazz band performed at the U of S for a jazz night. Both groups had excellent performances. The Winter Concert is being held on December 3 in Castle Theatre starting at 2:00 PM. We welcome back Mrs. Sandbeck on Tuesday, December 5 who is returning from maternity leave and say good-bye to Ms. Ho (who has been conducting the grade 9 & 10 bands) and Mrs. Holt who has been conducting the senior concert band. A big thank you to Ms. Ho and Mrs. Holt for their energy and hard work this semester. We wish Ms. Kmiech (intern) all the best as she finishes her semester with us. She has done an excellent job with out students and we wish her all the best. Congratulations to Andrew P., John B., Anthony P., Tyler C., Marianne K. and Kate S. for being invited to participate in the Saskatchewan Honour Band on October 26 - 28. The Honour Band is an opportunity for our province’s top students to come together and make great music and meet students from other programs. This is a group made up of 60 auditioned grade 9 - 12 students from across the province. They auditioned back in May and spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday in rehearsals with the concert performed late Saturday afternoon.

Aden Bowman Newsletter-December 2017 6

Students have a definite knack for spirit here at Bowman. Since the first month we’ve had events and opportunities that have allowed our new and current students to make the most out of their high school experience! At the beginning of October our ninth graders applied and campaigned for SRC representative. Each presented an amazing speech to give us an insight into their campaign. Congratulations to Lucie B., Callista S., Parker M. and Ben N.! After election week, the Grade 9 girls slumber party was a huge blast where girls bonded over Zumba, fun activities and games. By this point, Halloweek was also into play. We had spirit days/activities to embrace the spooky festive feel! This included a Black-on-Black Day; a Halloween riddle sheet for each homeroom to compete in; pumpkin Olympics; and a Jell-O-eating contest. We ended the fun week with a Halloween pep rally, including our annual costume contest and fun videos updating the students on the happenings of school. As November came around the corner, SRC decided to celebrate “Random Act of Kindness Day” with an act of our own by giving candy out in the hallways as a treat to our hardworking students! We recently started our Movember event where students donate to vote for a male teacher to shave off their beard in a weird and funky design (i.e. half off or a zebra print) which occurred throughout week. We also had a candy guess, lumberjack day, a Movember photo booth, and a charitable bake sale to end off the week. Overall, definitely a successful two months as our students eased into the routine of school. The SRC wishes a happy winter to all families, and can’t wait for the upcoming holiday season!
