I was born and raised in Auburn, NY wheremy mother taught me to sew at the age offour. I would sit on the floor next to her whileshe sewed. She would hand me her scrapsandwithneedleandthreadinmytinyhands,Iwouldmakemyowndollclothes.
Now,over50years later, I stilluse scraps offabric along with bits and pieces of assortedfibers, lace, ribbon and buttons to make myfabriccards.SometimesIuseheirloomfabricsfromgaragesalesandsecondhandstores.Formyquilts,Iuseonlythehighestqualitynaturalfabrics.Someofmy favorite fabricsarehandprintedbatiksfromBaliandJava.Whenprop-erlycaredfor,myquiltslastfordecades.
EachyearIindividuallymakehundredsoffab-riccards.Somearepostcardsthatmaybesentwithoutanyenvelope!(Yes,theywillabsolute-lygothroughthemailsafely.)Whatasurpriseitiswhenyourfriendopensthemailbox,peeksinsideanddiscoversthecheerfulburstofcolorandsoftfeelofoneofmyfabricpostcards.
I love nature and it shows in my fabric bowlsshaped like giant leaves and flowers. Eachoneisunique,colorfulanduseful.Ilovetoen-tertainsoIhaven’tforgottenaboutnecessitiesliketablerunnersandreversibleaprons(somedesignedfor themalechef!) Colors for theseoftencomplementtheseasons.

When I was a child, we had real butchershops using real butcher blocks. Thesewooden hulks were worked so hard thattheirflat topsbecamedishedfromuse,yettheyneversplit,cracked,orbecameover-come with bacterial problems. Millions ofknife cuts magically healed themselves.Howcouldthisbe?ThatwasaquestionthatIansweredasanadultwoodworker.
The butcher block tops weren’t just flatplanks,likeacountertop.Bundlesofhard-woodbilletswerearrangedwiththeirendspointed up. You could look down at theblock’ssurfaceandseethetree’sringsfac-ingupatyou.
Makingatruebutcherblockwaslaborious,but it yielded a cutting surface that wouldlast for centuries. Then, I discovered thata thinnercuttingboardbuiltwith thesameend-grain technology will work as well asthemonsterblock,withoutthe400poundsofbulk.
I gave my first end-grain cutting boardsaway as wedding presents. People lovedthem. When family members would askhowtheycouldgetoneIwouldreply,“Youhavetogetmarried!”Nowit’seasier. I’llsellyouone.

construction.ButIusethebestmaterialsand
arefinedsenseofdesigntocreatebeautifully
crafted cutting boards that become instant
heirlooms.Iusenothingbuthardwood,much
of it fromthis regionandsomefromCentral
and South America (responsibly harvested,
of course.) One wood I use is so hard and
densethatitwillsinkinwater!
Eachcuttingboardisindividuallydesigned,sonotwoarealike.Thefinishwillneverflakeoffbecausethereisnofin-ish, only hard wood polished to 1,500 grit, and given anon-hardening mineral oil treatment. It’s a cutting boardthatyourgreatgrandchildrenwillfightover.
You can hand wash my cutting boards just like a dish inhotsoapywater.Theyareprettymuchindestructible.Theywon’tsplitorcrackundernormaluse.Ifyoursdoes,senditbackandI’llrepairorreplaceitfree.

Which comesfirst, the walls inthe house or theart on the walls?I’ve been involvedin a renovationproject and havebeen working witha completely gut-ted interior—plan-ning and design-ing around little
morethantheoutsideshellofahouse.Con-strainedbytheoriginal footprintof theex-istingstructureandnotwanting tochangetheorientationtowardthebeautifulview,Istarted to think about how much I’d enjoysettingthestagefortheinteriorofthehousearoundspecificpaintings,ratherthanhang-ingpaintingsperwhateverwallsweendupconstructing.
Ithinkthebestofallworldswouldbeasitu-ation where your rooms could morph intodifferent physical configurations. If I couldaddress my need to constantly changethe look and visual feel of my home witha few moveable walls, I could update mysurroundingsatwill.TheneverytimeIcom-pletealargepainting,IcouldeasilydecidewhereitshouldhangbecauseI’dhavetheability to extend the length or width of aroom, changing the focal point with ease.Completely unrealistic, I know, but fun tothinkabout,allthesame.
Inreality,everythingaboutmyprojectmustbescaleddownbecausethespaceitselfislimiting.It’sanolderhomewithlowceilingsandsomanywindowsthatthereisverylit-tlewallspacefordisplayingart.Whilethewindows look out on an incredible vista,which is almost the embodiment of move-ableartonwalls(starkwhiteiceinwinter,
hazyneonpinkatsunrise,andeverythingdrivenbythewaterandskyastheyeffort-lesslyfloatby),I’vegonefromwhatseemedlikeunlimitedwallspacetohavingverynar-rowpossibilities.
It’s quite fitting that I’m attempting to dothisartisticdownsizinginFebruary—ashortmonth (to go along with my short walls).Maybe the real point of this exercise is toaccept that instead of hanging paintingsonthewalls,Ishouldsimplyletthenaturalview,asframedbythewindows,betheartinmyhouse.Soinsteadofdecidingwheretohangwhat…I’llsimplyopenmycurtains.

GivenasagiftforValentine’s Dayand other specialoccasions, choco-late has alwaysbeen viewed assomething ex-traordinary. Itsuse is believed to
haveoriginatedinMesoamericaandwasconsumedandusedinsacredceremoniesthroughouttheYucat-anandotherpartsofMexicoandCentralAmerica.Chocolate isknown tohavebeenwidelyconsumedby the Aztec, Mayan and Olmec peoples. Archeo-logicalevidencehasevendatedtheuseofchocolatebypre-Olmecculturesaslongagoas1750BC.
The Aztecs highly valued cocoa beans and some-timesevenusedthemascurrency.Chocolatewasforthemostpartconsumedasabeverage,withtheMa-yanspreferringtheirchocolateinahotdrinkwhilethe
Aztecsdranktheirchocolateinacoldbeverage.Thechocolatedrinkofthaterawasanunsweetenedmixofgroundcocoabeans,maizeandvariousspices.Asimilardrink,atole,whichismadefromunsweetenedchocolateandcorn,isstillpopulartodayinMexico.
ColumbusonceseizedanativetradingacanoefullofcocoabeansoffthecoastofHonduras,andtriedtoin-troducethecocoabeantoEuropeintheearly1500.The bitter, unprocessed flavor was not embraced.Cortes and the Spanish subsequently encounteredthebean’susageasabeverage.Withtheadditionofhoneyandsugars,thebitterflavorwasenhancedandthe drink caught on in Spain. The sweetened bever-agewasrenamed“chocolate”afterwhatwassaidtohavebeencalled“chocolatl”bytheAztecs.
For quite some time after its introduction in Europe,chocolatewas for the most part something reservedfor the nobility due to the labor intensive processesinvolvedinitsharvest.However,bythe1700’stheIn-dustrialRevolutionandtheuseofsteampowereden-ginesforprocessingbegantomakechocolatewidelyavailabletothemasses.
In1847 acompany based in England calledFry &Sons introduced thefirsteatingchocolate.However,itstilldidnotgainmuchtractiondueto itsbitterness.
ASwissmannamedDanielPeterexperimentedwithchocolate by adding milk, making the sweet choco-latewidelyconsumedtoday.
Unsweetened chocolate is used in Mexico’s tradi-tionalmolésauce. According toone legendon theoriginsofmolésauce,sometimeinthe1800stheSis-ters of the convent of Santa Rosa were expecting avisitfromtheArchbishop.Thesisterswantedtomakeawonderfulmealbutdidnothavemuch,sotheycom-binedalltheingredientstheycouldfindintoasauce.They used dried peppers, unsweetened chocolate,oldbreadnuts,andspicesandcookedthemixtureforaverylongtime.Themolésaucewaspouredoveraroastedwildturkey.TheArchbishoplovedthemealsomuchitbecamesymbolofMexicancuisine.

Community Corners Barber Shop has been attheCornersCommunityCenterforover55years.
TheoriginalbarbershopwasownedbyJohnKangas. The shop stood in the front sectionclose to Hanshaw Road, where Hage Tai-lor Shop is currently located. The shop waseventually sold to Joe Garguilo, who movedit toabasement location.Joeeventuallysoldthe business to Amy Drew, who successfullyhelped build the barber shop’s clientele towhatitistoday.
Al Thorton was next to take ownership andsuccessfullyrantheshopforover30yearsinthe basement location. Al’s motto was: Treatthe customer respectfully and professionally.Al was known for being an upbeat straightshooter,andcustomerswouldappreciate thebarbershop’sclassicstylewhereclientscould
socialize, with no frills and no appointmentsneeded.

In November, the Homer MethodistChurch, The Homer CongregationalChurch,andotherindividualsworkedtoraisefundsfortheHomerMethodistFoodPantrythroughtheLunchBucketCampaigntoFightHunger.
The Lunch Bucket Campaign to FightHungerplacedindividuallunchbuck-etsonthecheckoutcountersofstoresand businesses in Homer. Customerscouldplacedonationsinaslotineachlunchbucket.Thelunchbucketswerelabeledwiththewords“Fillthebuckettofillpeople’sstomachs.”
TheLunchBucketCampaigntoFightHungerwasdevelopedtodrawattentiontotheneedsofhungrypeopleinourarea,andthefactthatevenpeoplewithjobsmayneedadditionalhelpfromfoodpantriesto feed their families. The vintage lunch bucket designs served as areminderofasimplertimewhenpeoplebroughttheirlunchestoworkorschoolintinorhardplasticcontainers.
Toprepareforthelaunchofthecampaign,boththeHomerCongre-gationalChurchandtheHomerMethodistChurchaskedtheirmem-bersiftheyhadlunchbucketstheycoulddonate.Therewereseveraldonations, but because tin and hard plastic lunch boxes or bucketswerehard tofindcampaignorganizerssearchedgaragesales,fleamarketsandantiqueshopsinNewYorkandinPennsylvania.Someofthelunchbucketsfoundwererustyandneededtobesandeddownandrepainted.Lunchbucketsneededtobecleaned,andmoneyslotswerecutintheboxes.Aftermonthsofpreparation,enoughlunchbox-eswerecollectedtostartthecampaign.
TheHomerMethodistFoodPantryhasbeenserving thecommunityfor well over 25 years, according to pantry manager Tiny Hughes.Besides the Methodist Church, other local groups who contributefoodandfundstothefoodpantryincludetheHomerCongregationalChurch,theHomerSeniorCenter,P&CFresh,theUnitedWay,Mari-ettaCorporation,andstudentsfromtheHomerJr.-Sr.HighSchool.
Donated food and hygiene supplies directly help individuals andfamilies.Fundsraisedprovidepeopleinneedwiththeopportunitytopurchaseamorebalanceddiet,aswellasadditionalfoodtosupple-menttheirmeals.IdeallytherewillbeextrafoodavailableforspecialmealsatThanksgiving,Christmasandotherholidays.

The internet and file sharing finallybroughtthebusinesstoitskneesafteralongrun. There was an entire industry, includingmusicians to record executives and tons ofreal-world jobs inbetween, thatwasgener-allylostordevastated.
Therehasbeenacorrectionofsorts.Peopledo pay for downloads now, and some CD
salesstillhappen,butthebusinessisforeverchanged.Thesedayswhenpeoplelistentomusic, they are using streaming services orwatchingYouTube.Younolonger“need”tobuyittohearit.
Butthisisnotastoryofdoomandgloom.ThisiswhereEinstein’squotecomesintoplay.

The very same technology that crum-bledtheoldmusicbusinessmodelisexpand-ing,bringingwithitanewindustrymodel.Asfarasmusicians,we’reinitbecauseitisourpassion, and there are ways to make a liv-ingifyouarededicated.Forthoseinaudioproduction,audiohappens tobeacompo-nent in thisnewemergingmarket.Theinter-net is a constant flow of produced content.TherearemoreTVandsubscriptionservices,shows,andchannels thaneverand it isex-panding.Amazingly, radiohasnot lostanylistenership at all, and broadcast media isever-expanding.
Hereinourowncommunity,anexcitingandinnovative program is being developed atTompkins-Cortland Community College thatwill give students the skillsets used in thesenew emerging fields. I will be teaching twounitsofaMultitrackRecordingclass this se-mester at TC3. This is a good start, and weare optimistic that a new Audio Productionprogram will gain the support needed toexpand thisprogram intoa fulldegreepro-gram. From those who want to make andproducemusic,tothosewhowanttoworkinaudioorvideoproduction,thisnewprogramapproachesthemodernindustryinnewandlessrigidways.
