HOSPITAL OR HOMEBOUND VISITS
If you have a family member who is in the hospital, please
call Dcn. Randy Canale 797-2210 or the church office at
792-6168 and provide the information.
ANGEL TREE 2017 Each year, the Social Ministries Commission
sponsors Angel Tree in order to help children
from low-income-families who have
extraordinary medical needs, disabilities, or
chronic health conditions. Angel Tree is not just
about delivering Christmas gifts. It is really
about sharing the Good News of God’s love with children and
families who are in need of extra help. The gifts purchased give
Christ the King Cathedral parishioners the chance to materially
demonstrate God’s love and personally share the gift of Jesus.
Commission members will assist you with your angels in the
Gathering Space after the Sunday Masses. The angels will include
the child’s name and some gift suggestions. You may select your
Angels on Nov. 25-26 and Dec. 2-3.
All gifts should be wrapped and returned on the weekend of Dec.
9-10. In you have any questions; you may call Linda Markusen,
Commission chair at 792-6746.

Just as a typical calendar has four seasons, 12 months,
52 weeks, and 365 days that include holidays, solemn days, com-
memorative days, and days that are just "average," the
Liturgical Calendar of the Church uses similar terms and
measurements. The Liturgical Year begins on the first Sunday of
Advent, which usually occurs around the beginning of December
or the end of November, and ends on the feast of Christ the King.
Lectors have a critical role in the celebration of the Mass. Since
Lectors proclaim not just any word, but the Word of God, it is
essential that they develop the skills required to communicate
God’s message competently. Through the use of voice, eye
contact and personal presence, lectors help God’s Word come
alive for the assembly.
Join us for this week's Encounter as we welcome Kathy Felts who
will speak about the interesting topics of the Church's Liturgical
Calendar and about the role of a Lector in the Mass, as well as
how to become one. Kathy is quite knowledgeable on both
subjects and will help us have a better understanding as we enter a
new Liturgical Year.
This Advent, the Spiritual Life Commission would
like to invite everyone - families, singles, young
and old - to make ornaments to hang on our Parish
Jesse tree that will be in the gathering space. We
will provide ideas, and even templates, for you to
use to construct your ornaments. You are also welcome to come
up with your own, creative ways to represent the scriptures for
each day. It’s all up to you! Hang your ornaments on the tree
when you come to Mass each Sunday, or come by the church
every day to add them to the branches.
We hope you enjoy not only making the ornaments and learning
about Jesus’ family tree, but seeing our parish tree “bloom” and
change from day to day during this Advent season!
Go to www.ctkcathedral.org for more information, or pick up a
packet in the gathering space.

WHY LIGHT CANDLES? When one enters a Catholic Church, one notices a stand
with many candles burning brightly. These candles have
been lit by someone who asked God for an individual to be
healed or watched over, as a petition for a particular cause,
or in thanksgiving for answered prayers. These candles are
not only a sign of love and concern for someone, but also a
sign of faith on behalf of the one who lit each candle.
Next week marks the beginning of the season of Advent.
The four candles we light each Sunday symbolize our wait-
ing in joyful hope for our Lord’s arrival into the world. We
are not only celebrating the “Adventus Domini,” meaning
the arrival of the Lord, but also recalling our baptismal
promise to keep our lights burning brightly.
During our Baptism the Priest said the words “… this light
is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. …this child
has been lightened by Christ. May he (she) walk always as
a child of light. May he (she) keep the flame of faith alive
in his (her) heart. When the Lord comes, may he (she) go
out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom
(“Rite of Baptism for Children,” Catholic Book Publishing
Co.) This Advent, may we keep the light of Christ (we were
given at our Baptism) glowing brightly through daily sacri-
fice and good works.
“In celebrating the birth of Christ, let us carefully consider
what his birth reveals about God. This is a God who comes
not to condemn but to give life. Once we begin to grasp this
life, then the vision of Isaiah, as remarkable as it seems,
cannot hold a candle to the light that will shine from us. (Fr.
Gary Caster, The Little Way of Advent: Meditations in the
Spirit of St Thérèse of Lisieux).
“We’ll still deck the halls, light a few candles and whisper a
few prayers toward the clear night sky, but Christmas re-
minds us to tend to the fires of friendship, of family, and of
community. This Christmas, let your own light shine by
taking a moment to acknowledge some special quality in
those you love” (Kathleen M. Carroll, A Franciscan Christ-
mas).
A Prayer when Lighting a Votive Light
O Blessed Lord, and my beloved Mother, Mary, accept this
burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for you. Like
this candle, I am ready to be used in your service, without
asking why and to what purpose. Even as this candle, I wish
to be consumed in the light and warmth of your love. Please
hear my prayer and, if it is your will, grant my petition. But
above all make me loyal and faithful to you in all circum-
stances of my life. Amen.
The Social Ministries and the Spiritual
Life Commissions would like to thank
you for your tremendous help in
volunteering for the Encounter-in-
Action at Paul's Progress at Grace
Campus (formerly known as Tent City)
project this past Wednesday, Nov. 8. Without your
diligence, hard work, and loving concern we would not
have been able to feed 88 residents 112 pulled pork meals
and deliver much-needed ponchos, socks, hats, caps,
gloves, jeans, rosaries, and scripture and prayer cards of the
mercy and love of Jesus Christ.
A special thank you goes to all the people who donated
money for this endeavor and did the cooking for the great
meal we served – the roasted/smoked pork. We could not
have done this project without your generous help!
Thank you to the parishes of Christ the King Cathedral, St.
Joseph's, Holy Spirit, St. John the Baptist, St. Ann's in
Morton, Our Lady of Grace, Our Lady of Guadalupe and
San Ramon in Wolfforth – all 68 of you volunteers with
your smiling, caring souls – a job well done!

100 Things Every Catholic Should Know: Things to know
about language and translations: In case of the Gospels, it is
important to understand that Jesus spoke in Aramaic. He most
likely understood and spoke Greek, but in the day to day opera-
tions of his ministry he spoke in Aramaic. The Gospels were
written in Greek. What we read in our modern Bibles is English
translation for the modern reader-not the original Aramaic that
Jesus spoke, or the original Greek that St. Paul wrote in. We
should put a certain amount of faith in the translators. But it is
important to look at the Tradition of the Church and how certain
passages have been interpreted for 2000 years. While we look at
our Bible and make assumptions about how it should be read, that
is like a small child looking at Mars through a telescope in the
back yard, then calling NASA to tell them the planet is red. The
child could learn more by both looking at the planet and reading
what NASA has already discovered. In the end, the child would
be much more knowledgeable.
