The Crow: Stairway to Heaven
www.fabulousfilms.com RRP £39.99 The Crow: Stairway to Heaven is based
on the graphic novel by James O’Barr and
the 1994 film of the same name starring
Brandon Lee who famously died on set
when he was accidently shot.
People once believed that when someone
dies, a crow carries their soul to the Land
of the Dead. But sometimes, something
so bad happens that a terrible sadness is
carried with it and the soul can’t rest. But
sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back to
put the wrong things right.
Although it originally aired 16 years ago I think it would do well
today and this box set is definitely one to own.

What’s Good To Do Newsletter: Featured Review
Reviewed by David Savage The FUZE is a programmable computer and electronics workstation which is a great introduction to computer programming and electronics using FUZE BASIC and Raspberry PI (RPi).
When I was asked to review the FUZE (model B) I couldn’t wait to try it out as it looks quite interesting. On opening the box there was an aluminium box with a key-board and an IO board, a wireless mouse and mouse mat, power supply, Solder-less Breadboard, Electronic component kit (with wires, resisters, LED’s, display panel etc…), 8GB SD Card – pre-loaded with OS and FUZE BASIC, Project cards and a Programmer’s Reference Guide.
The box is very basic but very sturdy consisting of a UK keyboard, with 4 USB ports, an Ethernet port (network), HDMI port and as SD card slot.
Set up was very easy – I didn’t have a HDMI port on my computer monitor (a VGA-HDMI convertor be purchased from the FUZE website for an additional £9.99) so I used my TV screen. I plugged in the receiv-er for the wireless mouse and then inserted the SD card that is already loaded with the operating system and FUZE BASIC. That’s all that was needed, now I was ready to start playing.
After switching on the machine starts to load the OS and after 30 seconds or so you are greeted with a screen that looks similar to your PC desktop and operates in the same way by using the mouse and clicking on the relevant icons, in this case by double clicking the FUZE BASIC icon. This loads up the BASIC programming for use with the project cards.
Following the project cards takes you through the basic commands and how to write very simple programs starting with just creating a message on the screen and then adding in colours, changing page colours etc… As you get further into the projects you are introduced to more advanced functions like adding user input, variables, strings and conditions which enable you to write a program asking for user input allowing you to talk to the computer and getting different answers back depending on what answers you give.
Once comfortable with the BASIC language and programming functions you can then start building and programming simple electronic boards using the Breadboard (no idea why it is called this). The breadboard has no need for soldering you just need to insert your wires, LED’s etc… into the holes on the board. This does require some care and adult supervision as if the LED’s are not connected with the right resistor they can explode (wearing safety googles is recommended). By placing your wires for power to the IO board and placing LED’s, resistors etc… you can then start program-ming – so for example getting the LED’s to turn on and off.
Overall I enjoyed using the FUZE box, it is a very simple piece of kit that has great educational value. Just using the project cards that were supplied with the box took a few hours to go through to learn the basic
commands and introducing you to writing your own small programs. There are more projects cards that can be downloaded from the FUZE website along with lesson plans if you are a teacher and wanted to introduce this into your lessons.
The FUZE box is an excellent piece of kit that children and adults with love to get them interested in programming and electronics and is definitely something that every school should have. It does provide a safe environment for working with simple electronics.
If is a very sturdy construction, very robust and is protected against static, electronic shorting and physical damage. With the pre-loaded SD card it is ready to start using straight out of the box.
An excellent educational tool that children and adults will love using, a programmable robotic arm can even be purchased.
I love this fantastic little box and it would make a fantastic gift for anyone with an interest in computer or electronics programming!
Rating: 5/5 RRP: £69.99 to £229.99 Suitable age: 7 years +

What’s Good To Do Newsletter: Featured Article
Written by David Savage
Christmas can be an
expensive time of year
but doesn’t need to be.
You can still enjoy your
Christmas without
spending a fortune or
getting into debt.
Christmas is a time for peace and good-
will and a few people seem to have
forgotten this as we have just seen from
the television footage of the Black Friday
sales where customers were not only
pushing and pulling each other but biting
and fighting each other to grab a
discounted item. While getting items in a
sale in a great way to save money we
would recommend buying discounted
items throughout the whole year.
Work out a budget of what you can
realistically afford, including food,
presents, outing, parties etc… and stick
to it. If you can’t afford the latest games
console or television, don’t buy it. Do
you really need a 50” television because
your neighbour has one when a smaller,
cheaper one still shows the same
programmes and saves you money and is
actually a better fit for the size of your
room? Maybe in the New Year put a few
pounds a week away for Christmas to
relieve the burden.
Sit down with your family and explain
how much money is available to spend
on gifts. An inexpensive but thoughtful
gift is a much better present than the
most expensive gift you can buy that
may not be as well received, just buying
something because it is the next big
thing that everybody has is not the way.
If you have a large family just buy gifts
for the children in the immediate family.
Buying gifts for everybody just adds a
huge burden to everyone as the recipient
may also be on a budget and feel they
have to return a gift.
Make your own personalised gifts – this
is also a great way to get into the festival
spirit with the children
Cut out the unnecessary items like deco-
rations on the outside of your house –
this will not only reduce the cost of
decorations but your electric bill won’t
go through the roof.
Don’t get carried away in the
supermarket buying Christmas foods as a
majority of the time so much goes to
waste.
Shop around for the best prices, using
the internet can find you the best
bargains and lots more retailers are of-
fering price match so you can always get
the best price. Even saving a pound or
two per shop soon adds up in a great
saving.
You will never enjoy Christmas if you are
constantly worrying about the expense
and getting into debt. Christmas should
not be about how many gifts you get
your children or how much money you
spend on them. It should be about family
and friends and helping others. You can
enjoy your Christmas with your family
and friends being together without the
need for the most expensive items.
Christmas is NOT about spending money
but spending time with family and
friends and doing things together.
We hope that you enjoy your Christmas
and New Year. Gather your friends and
family and have great time enjoying the
pleasure of their company.
If you are buying gifts but are stuck for
ideas then do take a look at our
Christmas Gift Guide, every item
featured in it has been reviewed by one
of our team of reviewers who are mums
and dads just like you and have been
tried out with their own families. You can
view this online by visiting

on the Gift Guide banner.

The After House
by Michael Phillip Case
www.michaelphillipcash.com
RRP: £7.99 ISBN: 9781500600365
WGTD Rating: 5/5
Having never read, or heard of, Michael Phillip Cash before I was not sure what to expect from The After House, but as I love horror and ghost stories I was eager to start reading and I wasn’t let down.
Remy Galway and her young daughter Olivia are putting their lives back to
together after her failed marriage. She decides she wants to go her own way and not live in her parent’s house so rents a 300 year old house in the small town of Cold Spring Harbour, Long Island.
The house used to belong to the captain of a whaling ship in 1840 and there is a full wall mural of the 19th century Captain Eli Gaspar in the house.
Olivia doesn’t like the house and feels she is being watched but little do they know that they are sharing the house with Eli and 2 other mysterious beings that cannot be seen.
Eli doesn’t like the interruptions and changes they have brought with them and wants to scare them off but when someone or something starts threatening the life of Remy he soon becomes her protector.
Overall, I loved The After House. It is a ghost story that spans 174 years with great characters from the past and present. It is also a love story filled with danger and tragedy.
Each short chapter builds the tension until the final events are revealed, but will Remy survive, will Eli get his way and what is the purpose of the 2 mysterious figures? You will just have to read it to find out.
At 200 pages it is a great read that I read in one sitting as it was addictive and absorbing with excellent, strong characters. While I wouldn’t say it is very scary, it is a good ghost story that would suit teenagers and adults. Highly recommended.
Clementine Rose and the Prefect Present
by Jacqueline Harvey
www.randomhouse.co.uk
RRP: £5.99 ISBN: 9781849418737
WGTD Rating: 5/5
This series of Clementine Rose books
are for young readers and are fabulous for engaging children
and encouraging them to read on their own for fun and to
enjoy books! The chapters are nice and short – welcome to
the world of chapter books!
Clementine Rose is such a beautiful little character. A little
inquisitive girl that you would hope your own would be. The
author used to teach in a girls’ boarding school and I think
this is evident from her cast of characters.
It was lovely, as an adult, to read about a child with so much
imagination and there was some adult humour in the book
so overall a great book to engage both adult and child
reading together – with a lovely happy ending!
Alfie’s Christmas
by Shirley Hughes
www.randomhouse.co.uk
RRP: £6.99 | ISBN: 9781849416498
WGTD Rating: 5/5
Alfie’s Christmas is a wonderful addition to the ‘Alfie’ series written
by Shirley Hughes – both author and character have been exceptionally popular for many many years and this book is bound to help that tradition continue.
Shirley Hughes has been a firm family favourite for such a long time that it comes as no surprise that ‘Alfie’s Christmas’ is another success – it is a lovely story about family time at Christmas that takes us through Alfie’s adventures in the run up to (and on) this special day. It would be a perfect story to share with young children (and the rest of the family) next to the tree during the holiday season.
