MARCH 2006
Whatever happened to the paperless office? We were supposed to be rid of paper by now, supposedly because weare all connected to the internet and can exchange all of our infor-mation electronically.
Actually in many cases the reverseseems to have happened. Computersmake it easier to create paperwork, and so we do. The fact is, we all likepaper, and despite its drawbacks, ithas some definite advantages overelectronic documents. It is lighterthan a laptop and easier to usethan a hand-held computer. You do not have to boot itup to read it. Paper has nowires, mouse, power sup-ply, hard drive, or batteriesthat will need replacedover time. Information onpaper does not vanish intothe ether in the event of ahard drive crash. If all the infor-mation up until now would haveonly been available electronically, theadvent of paper and printing wouldprobably be hailed as the technologi-cal breakthrough of the century.
The dominant printing technolo-gies in use today are inkjet and laser.Largely because of their relatively lowup-front cost and their superb colorprinting capabilities, inkjet printersare very popular. Laser printers costless to operate and print faster, but aregenerally more expensive to pur-chase. But, in spite of their relativelyhigh printing costs, inkjets are largelythe printers of choice for the homeand small-office users.
Some manufacturing companies domake a lot of money on ink cartridgesales, but it looks like we are starting
to see the effects of some competition.People are realizing that there is moreto an inkjet printer than its up-frontcost. A $40.00 printer is not much of abargain if you have to spend morethan that amount on ink cartridges
every few weeks. The good news is that
change is in the wind. Arecent review of inkjetphoto printers by Tom'sHardware Guideincluded HewlettPackard’s newPhotosmart 8250. The
Photosmart 8250 has 6replaceable ink tanks. This
printer's high-capacity blackand five color cartridge tanks,
allow you to print a combination ofphotos and documents and they aresold separately. This means thatwhenever you run low on ink, youcan replace only the colors you need. The tests done by Tom's HardwareGuide show the following costs perpage when comparing the 8250 withthe more conventional 8050:
Black and white text, A4* page size,5% ink coverage: $0.02 vs. $0.06
Mixed text and graphics, A4* pagesize, 25% ink coverage: $0.09 vs. $0.26
4x6 photo: $0.34 vs. $0.65Along with being touted as the
world’s fastest photo printer, the HP8250 also produces fade-resistant pho-tos that will last for generations. TheHP Vivera Inks combined with HP
Advanced Photo Paper also give awater and smudge-resistant photo. Ofcourse all of this is good news forthose who create family photoalbums, or just want to print a photofor their desk that will not fade.
For more information on this excit-ing new product, stop in at our Gap orAkron locations. You can also read thewhole review from Tom’s HardwareGuide at http://www.tomshard-ware.com/2005/12/08/canon_hp_xmas_ink_jet_printer_fleet/index.html
