Pre-registration required.

PreventinG “death By PoWerPoint”Susan Hunter Director of Communications Sault College and Corporate Trainer, Tenaris University

We have all seen the following scenario unfold: The presenter takes their place at the front of the room with the best of intentions. But within a couple of minutes, most attendees have already “zoned out” – checking their Blackberry messages, chatting with their neighbour, reading material unrelated to what is being covered, or thinking about what they need to make for dinner that night.

This scene is unfortunate in most cases. But when the messages being shared involve health and safety, such a response to a presentation is more than just an incon-venience. It can be critical. Not being able to get your messages across, in an insightful way that inspires others to take action, could be a matter of life and death.

In a world where we are inundated with information, knowledge and entertainment, coupled with being busier than ever and having shorter attention spans thanks to the internet, how can we interrupt all of that noise and distraction and get our messages really heard?

In this session, learn “tried and true” tips and techniques for enhancing presentations first-hand that you can apply immediately. Gain an overview of whether or not to use PowerPoint coupled with hands-on exercises for delivering presentations effectively. You will also benefit from a high level review of “Prezi”, a new software pro-gram for presentations. Interactive small group discus-sions with participants will also uncover best practices.

The session will be delivered by corporate trainer and communications coach Susan Hunter. She will teach you how to put the “punch” into your presentations to make them more interesting, memorable and engaging so that you will not be the one out there accused of an avoidable “Death by PowerPoint.”

Seating is limited to 30 participants. Don’t miss out - register early!

Each year we refresh the conference program to reflect new and emerging issues.

ROB ELLIS

President, My Safe Work

Building a new Momentum

Many North American organizations are confronted with the same problem: how to get off a plateau of producing just average safety results. Embracing change in a traditional workplace environment is difficult. How do we get every level of the

organization onboard with the new expectations of producing better safety results? We will examine how the best companies are able to create a strategy that helps build a new momentum for their safety outcomes both at work and in their communities.

BreaKfaSt Keynote 8:00 – 8:45 am

CURTIS WEBER

Safety Spokesperson/Trainer

Overcoming the Odds: a personal Story

Curtis passionately shares his personal story of a workplace incident that nearly cost him his life. Luckily for Curtis, it only cost him 2 limbs and 3rd and 4th degree burns over 60% of his body. Let Curtis take you on his emotional journey and tell you how and why

he was lucky that day. It is a journey you will never forget. While focusing on the importance of safety, hazard assessments and safe work practices, Curtis has taken the opportunity to create a joint accountability approach to safety management and prevention, emphasizing self-accountability. Bringing a tragic, life changing and near fatal experience full circle, is how he puts a positive spin on a tragic set of events. Hear about Curtis’ journey – one of hope, passion for life, family and friends, as he shares a new life story of where he is today, how he got there and what was required to persevere and achieve the positive and successful recovery he has had.

you will be successful in communicating your message. Sound like a daunting task? Not so, when we realize that there is a science behind how a young mind works. Anna has been successfully communicating with youth for over 25 years and loves sharing how to do so with others.

using mobile apps to manage electrical ComplianceMark Jorgensen, Worker Safety Specialist, Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)

In today’s world of legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines, managing compliance is very challenging – even more so if your workers are in multiple locations dealing with different processes, pieces of equipment and different standards. You have trained your workers on the requirements of the standards or regulations. But it is not always easy to remember all the details when they are at work. What if you could provide them with a mobile app that, with a single scan of a QR Code, could provide them with all the detailed requirements for that particular pro-cess or piece of equipment? Mark will show you how ESA has used this technology to provide instant access to the particular clause of the CSA Z462 standard that applies. The same technology can work for you.
