Case Study: The Journey

‘real world’

technical and

analytical

skills

• From ‘Holly Sampson’s presentation to her GP, through the phases

of diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia and follicular B cell lymphoma

to monitoring and management

• Foundational knowledge lectures and discipline-specific practicals:

– Clinical Microbiology

– Cytopathology

– Histopathology

– Haematology

– Clinical Biochemistry

– Blood transfusion

• Case study flow chart – holistic patient care

• Work behaviours required of a MLS

– Reflections

– Case study examples

• Reflection each week: From the practical today what personal work

behaviours did you identify as being required of a competent

medical laboratory scientist?

Its hands on

- have a go!

Professional behaviours

Integral to the case study learning:

• quality control

• attention to detail in

– checking patient identifiers

– correct use of instrumentation

– following method protocols

• Documentation – immediate, accurate

The outcomes of the journey

• This ’taster’ of the profession allows students to progress

through the course with a clearer understanding of what lies

ahead in the course and in the workplace.

• Provides foundational ‘hands on’ experience of the work of a

MLS and the essential professional behaviours required to

deliver quality results.

• By setting the case within the context of a broader

healthcare scenario, students begin to understand

the importance of pathology results within the

multidisciplinary reality of quality patient care
