Low & Slow
by Henry Pflegl
Notes from the Editor
Happy Holidays everyone. From the last few months it
looks like it's going to be a wet winter. We will have to
take any possible dry days and take to the air. Take extra
care in preflighting your plane if it has been sitting for
awhile, not just for condensation in your tanks but un-
wanted critters that may be hibernating where it's dry.
The bright side is fuller reservoirs and lakes for a more
hydrated summer.
There's a new sheriff in town! I want to say thank you
to our officers and board members for this year's work
they did and welcome the new board members. Thank
you to Mike R. for his work on the newsletter and Ray P.
for his work on the web site. Ray is stepping down and
Keith P. will take over those responsibilities. Thanks to
Glen S. for his help as our Young Eagles coordinator.
Thanks to Larry S. for all the hours he spent on the lawn
mower(it's his effort and also the others that make it
possible for us to have our club house) it's a dirty rough
job that has to be done so be sure to thank those mem-
bers for a job well done. Thank you Keith P. for putting
up with me for all the support that I ask of you. Thank
you everyone.
Congratulations to Larry and Christine S. for complet-
ing their RV-12 and to Glen S. for his Cessna 172 pur-
chase and Pete G. for his Aeronca Champ. We are get-
ting more chapter members planes so let's hope the next
years weather will be more cooperative so we may pro-
vide more Young Eagle flights.
This was a good year, let's work for a even better com-
ing year.
That's it for now, see you all on the 11th..
The Newsletter is YOUR voice in the Chapter, not mine. It will be as rich as your contributions, so please take time to contribute frequently!
Mike
Safety Corner By Mike Rhodes
I know it’s an old, tired cliché…. Another year
went by too fast. This year, summer shut down at
the end of Sept. like a ton of bricks. I think it goes
by so fast because we’re lucky to have 4-5 mo of
reasonably flyable weather.
Six months of “spotty” flying weather lies ahead.
Depressing….. But the bright side is in 2 more
weeks the days start getting longer!!
Cold clear skies are bound to crop up now and
again, so don’t forget to pre-heat your engine be-
fore cranking it over.
Recommended oil weights and temp limits:
60-110 Deg. F—Aeroshell 100
30-90 Deg. F—Aeroshell 80

YOUNG EAGLES From Glen Schweizer
As some already know, at the last board meeting
I've asked to be relieved as Young Eagles Coordi-
nator. I recently started ground school for my in-
strument rating at Willamette Aviation. This
ground school course is pretty intense and I do
anticipate the flight training portion of this impor-
tant rating to require a lot of time and effort.
I would like to thank each and everyone of you
for your tremendous efforts and support during
my brief tenure as Young Eagles Coordinator.
From Mike:
On the Young Eagle Scholarship Fundraising ef-
forts we’re off to a good start. A number of people
have contribute significant cash, I’m aware of at
least 3 people who have pitched in $100 each.
The Yankee Candle sale raised $247 for the Chap-
ter.
So far the Bottle Drop recycling fund is $70.00

Last month’s Builders Group meeting was at Eric
Stacy’s to look over his Zenith 701 project.
Farewell celebration of life for Van’s Aircraft Demo
pilot, Joe Blank, who past away last month to can-
cer. It was a big turnout at the Aurora airport.
It was a gray drizzling day and just as the West
Coast Ravens did their missing man formation fly-
over, the clouds parted and the sun cast a beam
across the airport. Then…. the clouds closed up
and the sun went away.
It was a little eerie and not lost on me that Joe was
making his last pass and wave off.

with Dick Scott
Builders Group for Dec. They didn’t worry about density altitude—it was De-
cember and the wind coming down the runway was 27
mph. Must have been damned cold, there near the
beach. They had enough to worry about as they had
never flown this aircraft before and no one could give
them a briefing on handling characteristics, what to do
and what not to do, how to set it up for landing, etc. It
was a total mystery but they really, really wanted to fly
the homebuilt aircraft of their own design powered by
an engine they had designed and built. And this had to
be the day. And of course you recognize the event in the
famous picture below.
So this Saturday, the 113th anniversary of the Wright
Brother’s first flight, go out to the airport, fire up the
engine, turn toward North Carolina (72 degrees mag-
netic), push the stick forward just a little bit and bow
your airplane toward Kitty Hawk where the Wright
Flyer made the first controlled, heavier than air flight in
the world.
No builders group, Enjoy the holidays!

Bob Boring, former chapter president & RV-6A
builder is listed in the "Gone West" section of
the latest Sport Aviation. Bob moved to a little
town near Pacific City maybe 10+ years ago so
we haven't heard from him for a long
time. Bob was a preacher and a great guy and
I'm sure he will be missed by all who knew
him, but will be welcomed by all his new
friends at his new high altitude home.
