Region Wide... Immigration Detention: A British addiction. Monday 15th June 2015 Middlesbrough. Morning

presentations 11.00-13.00 Afternoon workshop 13.30 to 15.00 Hosted at The Hub (Teesside University Students’ Union), Southfield Road, Middlesbrough TS1 3BA

Join them for this special public event on immigration detention in the UK, the recent Parliamentary Inquiry on Detention, and how you can get involved in the fight for detention reform

Book your place on Eventbrite http://www.eventbrite.com/e/immigration-detention-a-british-addiction-tickets-16765502068 The UK’s approach to Immigration detention is a unique. The UK detains more migrants than any other European

country except Greece and is alone in detaining them indefinitel y, without time limit, sometimes for years on end. Indefinite detention not only devastates the lives of the individuals locked up without trial - it also hurts families and

communities who lose people to detention, and must welcome them back once they are released. Earlier this year, people in the North-East spoke out about this unfair, disproportionate and unnecessary loss of

liberty. Locals both directly and indirectly affected by immigration detention came together and gave testimony to the first-ever Parliamentary Inquiry on Detention, who published their report in March. Based on these, and hundreds of other testimonies, the Detention Inquiry report concluded that ‘we cannot go as we

are’. The cross-party panel of parliamentarians found the current detention system ‘expensive, ineffective and unjust’ and called for immediate detention reform: a time limit on detention, the introduction of community -based

alternatives and an end to the ‘enforcement-focused culture’ of the Home Office. Momentum for reforming the UK’s detention estate has only mounted since the report’s publication, with the Labour

Party joining the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and the Scottish National Party in supporting the recommendation of a time limit. But in the immediate aftermath of the general election, will the political pressure lead to change? And what are the most urgent steps that can be taken to make sure it does? How do we cure our

country’s addiction to detention? Join us for this special all-day public event made up of two key sessions:

Morning presentations: 11.00 to 13.00

Reflections on the Parliamentary Inquiry on Detention’s findings and recommendations

What’s next? The call to action

Speakers include

Jerome Phelps, Director, Detention Action

Eiri Ohtani, Co-ordinator, The Detention Forum

Speakers from asylum and refugee communities in the North East who contributed to the region’s

submission

Afternoon workshop: 13.30 to 15.00

Detention Action and Detention Forum will run a workshop sharing their experiences of supporting those both in detention and those at risk of being detained This event is organised jointly by Detention Action, The Detention Forum, Regional Refugee Forum North East and

the North of England Refugee Service Further information contact Wendy Elliot [email protected]

DFW Adoption are very excited to launch a new project within the charity called ‘AdoptAbility’. AdoptAbility are working hard to break down the presumed barriers and stigma of disabled

parenting through adoption. They hope to recruit disabled people who have thought about adoption but don’t know how to go about it, or don’t think it could ever happen for them because of their disability.

DFW are a voluntary charity, however the AdoptAbility scheme has received government grant funding. They are hopeful this government endorsement will be a positive start in developing and establishing AdoptAbility as a

specialist resource in both the adoption and disability communitie s. DFW Adoption are holding the AdoptAbility launch on Thursday 28 May 2015, between 2pm and 7pm at Disability

North, The Dene Centre, Castle Farm Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 1PH. This launch will give supporters, peers and most importantly potential a dopters with disabilities the opportunity to visit them to get an understanding of who they are, how they work and the opportunity to ask any questions.

To book your place please click on the following link: Adoptability Launch. AdoptAbility Aim: AdoptAbility is a scheme which we believe has the potential to help people with a disability to

become loving parents through adoption, and also potentially place children with or without a disability in a loving home, to spread the message to disabled people hoping to be adopters that we are here in the North East and aim

to support and guide, whilst also helping us to dispel some of the myths surrounding disabled parenting and adoption. If you have any further enquiries regarding the AdoptAbilit y scheme or the Launch, do not hesitate to contact DFW on [email protected] or call us on 0191 386 3719

Walking for Health is part of England’s largest network of health walk s chemes, helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle. Our walks are led by friendly, knowledgeable people, specially trained for the job. Along with fellow walkers, our walk leaders provide all the advice and encouragement a new walker nee ds to build fitness at a

pace that’s right for them. In just a short time, a small amount of regular exercise can significantly improve a person’s health, well-being and confidence. And from what our walkers tell us, there’s plenty of laughter to be

heard on our walks. By the end of the course you will: Understand what Walking for health is about. Understand the benefits of walking

and physical activity. Get to know the role of a walk leader. Information on mental health and learning disabilities. Have access to follow-up support and resources to help people make the most of your skills, including a Volunteer Walk Leader manual. Be confident to lead a health walk in due course (following the guidance that goes with the

progress card) Have met and shared best practice with other walk leaders What to take on the day: Suitable clothing and footwear – you will be taking part in a short demonstration health

walk. Your own snacks and/or drinks – unfortunately no catering will be provided. There is a café within the training venue.

What is expected of you after the training day? When you have completed the walk leader training day your cascade trainer will sign and date your progress card to show that you have attended the training session. They will also need to sign off the following stages of your

progress card. You will then observe 1-2 health walks and take note of how the existing walk leaders run them. The final stage is to lead your own walk. When you have completed these stages, and your progress card has been fully

signed off, you will be a fully qualified walk leader and will receive your certificate from your coordinator.
